One tiny seed surrounded by Mother Earth, watered by rain from heaven, blessed by man and often grows as tall as 6 feet. When they become mature, so rich from God’s blessings, they become like man, stooped with age.
The main stalk is strong which is the life center, often seven branches symbolizing the seven days of the week, twelve green leaves representing the 12 months of the year.
Each flower has 52 golden yellow petals, representing 52 weeks of the year. In the center of the yellow frame of petals, there are 365 rich seeds representing our calendar year. Each morning, the sunflower, faces the rising sun to the East, as if to say “Good morning” to the Great Spirit.
This beautiful, stately flower of God is the emblem of Spiritualism.
It is unknown who first suggested the sunflower as a suitable emblem of Modern Spiritualism. However, we do know that for centuries long before the Christian era, the sunflower has been a favorite emblem of Constancy.
From the sunflower, the bright …. color …. yellow …. also became among the ancients, the symbol of Truth and Constancy. For this very reason, it was adopted by the Women Reformers of the 1800’s. The adoption of the Sunflower has been the emblem of Spiritualism at least since 1892.
The Spiritualists in Cassadaga Lake Free Association have adopted the Sunflower as its seal as shown in its Constitution and By-Laws in 1892 and adopted in 1893. In 1900, William Bach manufactured the first pins bearing the Sunflower Emblem.
“As the Sunflower turns its face to the light of the sun, so let Spiritualism turn the face of Humanity to the Light of the Truth”!!
Isn’t Nature awesome????
