“What’s in a name? That which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet.”
My full name is MARIA HORTENSIA REXACH RIVERA.
It is a combination of two names and two surnames.
This part of the name has a story behind it, (don’t they all?). My mother had been pregnant several times and had miscarried. All of the babies were males. When she was pregnant with me, she wanted to have a girl. Being deeply Catholic, she made a promise to the Blessed Virgin Mary, to name her baby Maria, to honor the Virgin.
Hence, the name MARIA.
My mother’s name was Hortensia.
Hortensia is Spanish for Hortense. It is also the name of a flower …. hydrangeas.
REXACH RIVERA is my surname.
In many cases, a surname is a family name and many dictionaries define “surname” as a synonym of “family name”. In the western hemisphere, it is commonly synonymous with “last name”, since it is usually placed at the end of a person’s given name.
~~REXACH is my father’s last name~~
~~RIVERA is my mother’s last name~~
My mother was born in Yabucoa, a small town in the East coast of Puerto Rico. She lived there until she traveled to New York City in the early 1930s. She had gone to college to become a teacher and was also quite the seamstress.
My father was born in another little town in Puerto Rico called Juncos, near the East coast. He also migrated to the United States and found his place in New York City.
During the late 1920s and the early 1930, the young adults in Puerto Rico wanted a better future than the Island could offer at that time. Many of them migrated to the United States mainly with the intent to better themselves and send part of their earnings to the family that was left behind.
This is how my parents met. They both had moved to New York City.
~~They met, fell in love and were married in 1934~~
~~the dashing couple~~
After a few years, they returned to Puerto Rico ……..
to start a family and continue their journey in life.
Before having me, my Mother had the first-born. The only one of five that made it. He was my only, older brother …. Jose Tomas.
~~My Mother, my Father and me. I was 5 years old here~~
~~Memories of a pageant in school ….. circa 1956~~
….. and this is my family!!!
Here you have some information about me. My immediate family …
…. of the four of us, I’m the only one remaining.
As you see above, we still are in touch. Their memory is always with me …
~~I’m writing this today to honor them …. because I’m missing them~~
~~~THIS IS MY FULL NAME AND THE MEANING BEHIND IT~~~
