WHO ARE THE OATH KEEPERS?

I’m dusting off an old post that I prepared more than one year ago. I find it relevant today in light of the reported events which occurred in the one year celebration of Michael Brown’s shooting death in #Ferguson.

It’s been reported that the group was seen there during the memorial.

Their presence lead to chaos, intimidation, trouble and “persecution” of those who were present trying to remember these sad events one year prior.

I find them to be intimidating and overbearing.

I strongly believe in the 1st amendment and the right to bear arms for those who feel that need.

Yet, I’m not for an armed militia who has military training and god knows what’s in their (maybe twisted) minds.

I WENT TO A LOCAL ESTABLISHMENT TODAY AND FOUND THIS BROCHURE IN THEIR LOBBY.

THIS IS COPIED WORD BY WORD.

YOUR THOUGHTS??? 

Needless to say, I haven’t returned to said establishment.

Our oath is to the Constitution, not to the politicians and not to any political party. In the long-standing tradition of the US military, we are apolitical. We don’t care if unlawful orders come from a Democrat or Republican or if the violation is bipartisan.

We will not obey unconstitutional (thus unlawful) and immoral orders such as orders to disarm the American people or to place them under martial law. We won’t “just follow orders”.

PRINCIPLES OF OUR REPUBLIC WE ARE SWORN TO DEFEND

As our Declaration of Independence states:

All men are created equal and endowed by their creator with certain inalienable rights,
To secure these rights, Governments are instituted among men.
Governments derived their just powers from the consent of the governed.
Whenever any form for Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it and to institute new Government
Governments long established should not be charged for light and transient causes.

But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce then under absolute Despotism ..
… it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government

Each of you must remind yourself of those hard earned lessons, renew your understanding of the principles of American liberty and how those principles are reflected on the Constitution and Bill of Rights you swore an oath to defend.

And then you must search your soul and arrive at your own personal line in the sand.

REMEMBER YOUR OATH

If you are in military service or are a peace officer, remember your oath. We hope for a return to the Constitutional Republic free from fear and hatred. We hate only tyranny. You may someday find yourselves as the last bulwark against that tyranny.

We are not advocating or promoting violence or acts of aggression towards any person, group or organization or government, whether local, state or national. We simply want all public servants to live up to their oath to “support and defend the Constitution” as it is written.

At all Oath Keepers gathering, we provide an opportunity for those who have taken the oath to renew their oath and for those who have never sworn the oath to do so for the first time, all standing together and repeating the following:

I, ___________________ , do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States of America, against all enemies, foreign and domestic, that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same and that I take this obligation freely without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion, pledging my life, my fortune and my sacred honor. TEN ORDERS WE WILL NOT OBEY:

We WILL NOT obey orders to disarm the American people.
We WILL NOT obey orders to conduct warrantless searches of the American people.
We WILL NOT obey orders to detain American citizens as “unlawful enemy combatants” or subject them to military tribunal.
We WILL NOT obey orders to impose martial law or a “state of emergency” on a state.
We WILL NOT obey orders to invade and subjugate any state that asserts its sovereignty.
We WILL NOT obey any order to blockade American cities thus turning them into giant concentration camps.

Oath Keepers National Leadership

~~Stewart Rhodes~~

Stewart is the founder and President of Oath Keepers. He served as a US Army paratrooper until disabled in a rough terrain parachuting accident during a night jump.

He is a former firearms instructor, former member of Rep. Ron Paul’s DC staff and was a volunteer fire fighter in Montana.

He graduated from Yale Law School in 2004, where his paper “Solving the Puzzle of Enemy Combatant Status” won Yale’s Miller prize for the best paper on the Bill of Rights. He assisted teaching US military history at Yale and was a Yale Research Scholar.

Stewart has written the monthly “Enemy at the Gates” column for S.W.A.T. Magazine, for The Warrior, the journal of Gerry Spence’s Trial Lawyer’s College, for www.moreliberty.org and for JPFO.

~Oath Keepers: American Revolution Started Over Disarmament~

The American revolution started on April 19, 1775, after the British regulars came to disarm the militia of their stockpiles in Lexington. It became the shot heard ’round the world.

Today, the same establishment that has openly violated much the Constitution and Bill of Rights, wantonly spied on communications and staked TSA agents at airports despite the 4th Amendment, and much more in a long train of abuses, is now seeking to dismantle the 2nd Amendment right to keep and bear arms.

Right now there are a lot of people looking for a revolutionary leader; they are looking for someone to step up and organize a resistance against the government and the bankers. This is creating a vacuum of power. One that could be filled by someone who doesn’t have your best interests at heart.

  1. The Oath Keepers were present less than a year ago during the original protests and riots. Their focus as publicly stated was on the side of the locals and not the police. Their leaders were voicing their concern on # 10 “We WILL NOT obey orders which infringe on the right of the people to free speech, to peaceably assemble and to petition their government for a redress of grievances” They were voicing their concern over the over militarization of the Ferguson PD. and they have been a thorn on the side of the police. They are a conservative group but not all such groups are the same. I would need to do more research before I jump on the band wagon against them..

  2. I don’t know enough to render a judgment yet but here are some notes that I have from an older NY Times article:

    NY TIMES ARTICLE EXCERPTS/ “On Rooftops of Ferguson, Volunteers Patrol, With Guns”/ By MANNY FERNANDEZ and ALAN BLINDER-NOV. 29, 2014

    FERGUSON, Mo. — “When Sam Andrews awoke on Tuesday morning, he found his wife watching a television interview with a woman whose bakery had been vandalized during the violent unrest here on Monday.”

    “She said, ‘You’ve got to go help her,’ ” Mr. Andrews said in an interview on Saturday morning.”

    “And so Mr. Andrews, a former Defense Department contractor who is now a weapons engineer in the St. Louis area, set to work. Under the auspices of a national group called the Oath Keepers, Mr. Andrews accelerated plans to recruit and organize private security details for businesses in Ferguson, which are receiving the services for free. The volunteers, who are sometimes described as a citizen militia — but do not call themselves that — have taken up armed positions on rooftops here on recent nights.”

    “Mr. Andrews declined to say how many people were assisting in the effort, saying only that the number was “more than five, less than 500.” He estimated that men make up about 80 percent of the volunteers. About 80 percent are white, and 10 percent are black.”

    “But on Saturday, with the county police said to be threatening the Oath Keepers with arrest, the volunteers decided to abandon their posts and instead protest against the authorities. During the evening, Mr. Andrews and some of his colleagues appeared on South Florissant Road, conducting a protest of their own. They ate pizza and stood beneath a handmade sign critical of Chief Jon Belmar of the St. Louis County police.”

    “Their presence is a symbol of the continuing criticism of Gov. Jay Nixon’s handling of security before and after the grand jury’s decision became public. In the days before the announcement, Mr. Nixon declared a state of emergency and sent the Guard to Ferguson. Yet, in the initial hours following word of the grand jury’s decision, the Guard played only a limited role. Troops protected a police command post and other facilities, but they were not posted along the main commercial corridors where property destruction was rampant.”
    “The governor said himself, I think on TV, that the businesses will be protected by the National Guard during this situation,” said Reggie Jones, the mayor of Dellwood, a neighboring city where many businesses were damaged in Monday’s unrest. “Unfortunately, that did not happen until Tuesday. But we were expecting it to happen on Monday.”

    But for people like Mr. Andrews, the governor’s vow was of little solace. So while the New Chinese Gourmet restaurant at the end of a block of South Florissant Road appears to have little in the way of defense beyond the painted wooden boards that cover its windows, armed men and women on recent nights have roamed the rooftop it shares with a dental practice and a law office.

    “When they’re here, there’s definitely a weight lifted off of our shoulders,” said Davis Vo, whose family owns New Chinese Gourmet. “I’d be lying if I said otherwise.”

    “Mr. Andrews said he researched the qualifications of each volunteer, as well as whether any might have racially based motivations to participate.”

    “I don’t want any racists in my group,” he said. “I don’t want any people who want to visit violence on any group. I only want professionals with real credentials that can be verified and have experience in dealing with violence.”

    “But the St. Louis County police, Mr. Andrews said, and other law enforcement officials have expressed misgivings.”.

While I haven’t made a judgment about the Oath keepers, I am leaning towards Mother Jones journalist, Justine Sharrock’s analysis of this group. “I’ve toggled between viewing them either as potentially dangerous conspiracy theorists or as crafty intellectuals with the savvy to rally politicians to their side. The answer, I came to realize, is that they cover the whole spectrum.”

    Excerpts of a mixed review on the Oath keepers from Washington Post, 12/1/2014: “The Oath Keepers: The little-known militia now roaming the streets of Ferguson” By Terrence McCoy:

    “There, on the rooftops and streets, members of this little-known national group now stand guard, ready, they say, to protect residents and the Constitution against forces known and unknown. They wear military fatigues and speak of lending a sense of security to the bewildered community, battered by national media attention and months of protest. According to reports, they’ve materialized around a series of second-story apartments near the Ferguson Police Department, confusing onlookers.”

    “I opened the window and said, ‘Hey, can I help you?’” resident Greg Hildebrand told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch he asked one Oath Keeper. “I am in the middle of a difficult spot. I feel a lot better having those guys on the roof.”

    “Local cops didn’t agree. Over the weekend, they threatened keepers of the oath with arrest, forcing the men to abandon their positions, but not the group’s founding tenets. “It’s a really broad group of citizens, and I’m sure their motivations are all different,” one member named Sam Andrews told the New York Times. “In many of them, there’s probably a sense of patriotism. But I think in most of them, there’s probably something that they probably don’t even recognize: that we have a moral obligation to protect the weakest among us.”

    “Oath Keepers came into being after founder Stewart Rhodes wrote a 2008 manifesto calling for men and women to protect a complacent America besieged by what he described as dictatorial leaders. “If a police state comes to America, it will ultimately be in your hands,” Rhodes, a Yale Law School graduate, wrote. “That is a harsh reality, but you had better come to terms with it now, and resolve to not let it happen on your watch.”

    “Media reports have characterized the group as right-wing and deeply conspiratorial in outlook, but that doesn’t quite get at the complex forces and anxieties driving it. Oath Keepers take inspiration from both the far right and the far left. Members preach the gospel of the Constitution, but also don the mask of Guy Fawkes, the fabled Englishman executed in 1606 for plotting to kill King James I.”

    ..”last month declared a state of emergency and called the National Guard to Ferguson. But the Oath Keepers said those forces weren’t protecting the people against rioters who have torched shops, smashed windows and burned police cars.”

    “The group’s membership, which reportedly spills across racial and regional lines, suggests common ground among fringe groups on either side of the political spectrum. “In the months I’ve spent getting to know the Oath Keepers,” wrote journalist Justine Sharrock in Mother Jones, “I’ve toggled between viewing them either as potentially dangerous conspiracy theorists or as crafty intellectuals with the savvy to rally politicians to their side. The answer, I came to realize, is that they cover the whole spectrum.”

    • Just a short comment …. I have still to read the info you’ve sent carefully. And this may be a very simplistic thought …. their mere presence, in the attire they wear and the gun power they wield would be scary to me and, I think, provoking, in your face kinda way … to those that are already feeling that way because of the gear the police use at such demonstrations. Seems to me it provokes more than provide feeling of protection.
      Just short for now … I also have a gut feeling about them and usually my gut is correct.

  4. I’LL GO WITH YOUR GUT FOR NOW. MY THINKING IS ALONG THE LINES THAT IF THEY ARE A THORN ON THE SIDE OF THE FERGUSON POLICE, THEN I DON’T WANT TO WRITE THEM OFF AS BEING COMPLETELY NEGATIVE. THIS STORY DID NOT GET MUCH TRACTION A FEW MONTHS AGO. IF IT IS THE POLICE PUSHING THIS STORY LINE NOW, THEN I AM DEFINITELY RESERVING JUDGMENT..
