President Obama shook hands with his Cuban counterpart Raul Castro in a landmark moment for the two countries at Nelson Mandela’s memorial service.
As President Obama made his way onto the stage to pay tribute to Nelson Mandela – he extended his hand to Raul Castro – who shook it and smiled back. The handshake is a rare gesture between the leaders that reflects Nelson Mandela’s spirit of reconciliation. The only previous known handshake between U.S. and Cuban presidents since the island’s 1959 revolution was at the United Nations in 2000, when Raul’s brother Fidel shook the hand of then-U.S. president Bill Clinton in a chance encounter. Report by Sarah Johnston.
Speaking on CNN, correspondent John King predicted Obama would be criticized for the handshake.
“There will be someone out there who thinks that was horrible,” King said, before adding, “I think the president was showing respect for the moment.”
Jon Stewart Flips Out Over Obama-Castro-Handshake-Gate: ‘What the F*ck Is Wrong with Us?!’

Jon Stewart couldn’t help but find it a little ironic Tuesday night that on a day meant to honor the life of Nelson Mandela, a man who was all about forgiving and embracing his enemies, all the American media seemed to be obsessed with Obama-Castro-Handshake-Gate. Stewart dejectedly sighed and cried, “What the f*ck is wrong with us?!”
The argument seems to be, as Stewart put it, that “Obama had the audacity to greet another world leader with a gesture so meaningless, you can train a basset hound to do it.”
Stewart smacked down John McCain‘s Hitler comparison and said this entire “scandal” goes against the spirit of what Mandela fought for to bitch and moan over a goddamn handshake.
But even Stewart had to agree: that selfie? “Kind of fu*ked up.”
