The Butterfly Story ….. for a dear friend!!

Butterfly Story . . . our struggles make us stronger!
“A man found a cocoon of a butterfly. One day a small opening appeared. He sat and watched the butterfly for several hours as it struggled to force its body through that little hole. Then it seemed to stop making any progress. It appeared as if it had gotten as far as it could, and it could go no further.

So the man decided to help the butterfly. He took a pair of scissors and snipped off the remaining bit of the cocoon. The butterfly then emerged easily. But it had a swollen body and small, shriveled wings.

The man continued to watch the butterfly because he expected that, at any moment, the wings would enlarge and expand to be able to support the body, which would contract in time. Neither happened! In fact, the butterfly spent the rest of its life crawling around with a swollen body and shriveled wings. It never was able to fly.

What the man, in his kindness and haste, did not understand was that the restricting cocoon and the struggle required for the butterfly to get through the tiny opening were God‘s way of forcing fluid from the body of the butterfly into its wings so that it would be ready for flight once it achieved its freedom from the cocoon.

Sometimes struggles are exactly what we need in our lives. If God allowed us to go through our lives without any obstacles, it would cripple us. We would not be as strong as what we could have been. We could never fly!”

Song by Deniece Williams — a video that captures the essence of Black History and this song fit perfectly.

The song was originally recorded in 1984.

~~Lyrics Below~~
Morning light, silken dream to flight
As the darkness gave way to dawn
You’ve survived, now your moment has arrived
Now your dream has finally been born

Black Butterfly, sailed across the waters
tell your sons and daughters
what the struggle brings
Black Butterfly, set the skies on fire
rise up even higher
so the ageless winds of time can catch your wings

While you slept, the promise was unkept
But your faith was as sure as the stars
Now you’re free, and the world has come to see
Just how proud and beautiful you are

Let the current lift your heart and send it soaring
Write the timeless message clear across the sky
So that all of can read it and remember when we need it
That a dream conceived in truth can never die

Cause now that you’re free and the world has come to see
Just how proud and beautiful you are

Yeah, yeah, yes

      • Horty, you know I love you for this.

Many moons ago, (around 1985) a minister spoke at the church I attended about the verse that speaks that we shall not all die, but we shall be “changed.” Turns out that the Greek word translated “change” is where we get our English word metamorphosis. That is what caused my interest in caterpillars/butterflies.

Just like the caterpillar, everything we need to transform to soar to a higher realm of life is already within us. We might be caterpillars today but we know that is not what we will remain. We might be able to see only one perspective from our lives of crawling, but we know it is not the only perspective. There is more. We only need to rise to see from all angles. We need our wings. That comes through change and the change comes through struggle.

When the time comes to transform, the knowledge of how to go about it and where, is already within us. In the midst of that transformation comes a faith because we are vulnerable, but when the time is right to break-through, we are up to the challenge because freedom in every way we know it, is precious.

        We are butterflies!!

      • Horty, no, I didn’t know it was for me. Bless your heart. You certainly knew how to inspire and lift me. I am indebted to you, my friend.
