Young and Gay in Putin’s Russia ….. continuation!

~~January 27, 2014~~

Yesterday I posted several articles related to the effects of the Russian homophobic law that has been implemented in that country and the situation around the Sochi Winter Olympic games. While looking for information for these post, I found a documentary that explores and shows the current situation of the young LGBT community in that country.

This documentary is available on youTube and is divided in five parts.

Yesterday I posted #1 and #2. I would like to complete the series here.

THERE IS NO WAY ON THIS EARTH THAT ANYONE CAN CONVINCE ME THAT THIS ISN’T WRONG. THESE ARE HUMAN RIGHTS … NO DIFFERENT THAN RIGHTS THAT HAVE BEEN FOUGHT FOR. THERE IS NO RELIGIOUS BELIEF THAT CAN JUSTIFY THIS DISCRIMINATION AND ABUSE OF POWER.

Young and Gay in Putin’s Russia is a documentary exposing the effects that the Russian propaganda laws have on youth. After Russia passed the “anti-propaganda” law, attacks against LGBT people are on the rise. The propaganda law prohibits anyone discussing LGBT issues with minors therefore young Russians who come out have no support.

The criminal charges for adults cut off LGBT youth from any support system they might need. The main purpose of the law is to ban youth from getting the impression that being a member of the LGBT community is normal.

The documentary is divided into 5 episodes. In the first episode the filmmakers learn about the LGBT cabs in Russia as well as the LGBT self-defense classes to help individuals protect themselves from the hate-crimes. Although filming such a provocative documentary can certainly be penalized by the Russian police, exposing how LGBT people are treated in Russia is crucial.

You can take action and stand up for equality in Russia.

Love Russia, hate homophobia

Russia has criminalized public expressions of LGBT identity and public advocacy of LGBT equality. Simultaneously, the Russian police are doing little to stamp out a wave of horrific anti-gay violence.

Coinciding with this state-sanctioned homophobia, Russia is hosting the Winter Olympics in February 2014 in the city of Sochi.

We need to stand together and support Russian LGBT people. The anti-gay laws are a violation of the Russian constitution and the European Convention on Human Rights, which Russia has signed and pledged to uphold. They are also incompatible with the Olympic Charter, which prohibits any form of discrimination.

Border2

The rising level of homophobic repression is one aspect of a wider attack on all civil and human rights by President Putin’s regime, including the victimization of journalists and lawyers, state control of the media, suppression of peaceful protests, denial of workers’ rights and the arrest of opposition activists.

It is important that we support an alliance between LGBT and straight Russians to oppose all tyranny.

Help us to get the message out:

End the anti-gay law & homophobic violence

Solidarity with Russian LGBTs & human rights defenders

Defend freedom of expression & human rights for all Russians

Oppose the Putin regime’s escalating authoritarianism

IOC must protect LGBT athletes & spectators – & ensure freedom of expression

Sochi corporate sponsors must condemn homophobic legislation & violence

The IOC must insist Russia lifts its ban on a LGBT Pride House at Sochi

Border2

The Russian government claims the new law against so-called ‘propaganda of non-traditional sexual relationships’ is solely concerned with protecting minors under 18.

Even if this was true, why do young people need protecting from the reality of same-sex love? This excuse is implicit homophobia.

The new Russian law criminalizes any public expression of LGBT identity or any advocacy of gay equality, where a person under 18 might see it. It specifically criminalizes anything that suggests heterosexuality and homosexuality are equally valid.

Border2

The Russian authorities are manipulating this law to demonize LGBT people and relationships.

Already, people have been arrested for holding gay equality signs and for saying homosexuality is normal – even without any evidence that a person under 18 saw them.

36 horrific photos of Russian homophobia that you must see.

In episode 3 we meet Katia from Pussy Riot and some of Russia’s core LGBT activists, Alexei Davydov, Ray and Nix, who stage protest actions to raise awareness about the sometimes fatal implications of the homophobic law, like the rise in suicides among LGBT teenagers. A conversation with our driver Artem sheds light onto why there are still so few gay rights activists in Russia.

In episode 4 we meet one of Putin’s spin doctors, Alexey Mukhin, who is the Director General of the Center for Political Information. Before the law was passed, he published a report assessing public opinion and warning that, unless action was taken, Russia could face a gay revolution. We also follow activist Nikolai Alexeyev, the organizer of Moscow’s now banned Pride Parade, to an action by the Sochi Olympics Headquarters. He explains why Russia’s LGBT activists are against the West’s calls for a boycott of the Olympics.
