Blackfish is a 2013 documentary film directed by Gabriela Cowperthwaite. The film premiered at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival on January 19, 2013, and was picked up by Magnolia Pictures and CNN Films for wider release.

Blackfish focuses on Tilikum, an orca held by SeaWorld, and the dangers of keeping the species in captivity.

The documentary focuses on the captivity of Tilikum, a killer whale involved in the deaths of three individuals, and the consequences of keeping killer whales in captivity. The coverage of Tilikum includes his capture in 1983 off the coast of Iceland, purported harassment by fellow captive whales at Sealand of the Pacific, incidents that Cowperthwaite argues contributed to the whale’s aggression and includes testimonial from Lori Marino, Director of Science with Nonhuman Rights Project.

Cowperthwaite also focuses on SeaWorld‘s claims that lifespans of whales in captivity are comparable to those in the wild, typically 30 years for males and 50 years for females, a claim the film argues is false. Interview subjects also include former SeaWorld trainers, such as John Hargrove.

Blackfish tells the story of Tilikum, a performing killer whale that killed several people while in captivity. Along the way, director-producer Gabriela Cowperthwaite compiles shocking footage and emotional interviews to explore the creature’s extraordinary nature, the species’ cruel treatment in captivity, the lives and losses of the trainers and the pressures brought to bear by the mulit-billion dollar sea-park industry.

This emotionally wrenching, tautly structured story challenges us to consider our relationship to nature and reveals how little we humans have learned from these highly intelligent and enormously sentient fellow mammals.

~~13 Celebrities Speaking Out Against SeaWorld~~

There has been a huge backlash against SeaWorld ever since Blackfish premiered. Average Joes and celebrities alike continue to speak out against the cruelty at SeaWorld. Check out these celebrities who are protesting SeaWorld and what they have to say about the abusement park.

So I've never been a fan of places like that. ... I think they should just shut them all down. -Matt Damon

All of that stuff is hard on animals, it's cruel. … What they do at SeaWorld is not okay. -Willie Nelson

Do watch 'Black Fish.' Don't go to SeaWorld, a stain upon humanity posing as entertainment. -Russell Brand

'Black Fish' and 'The Cove' should be watched before deciding to take your kids to any sea life parks. -Ewan McGregor

Kudos to @cnn for airing #blackfish. ...what amusement parks are doing to our orcas and dolphins is immoral. -Josh Groban

The way you get his sperm is by having someone get into the pool and masturbate him with a cow's vagina filled with hot water. Even in my wildest days with Motley Crue, I never could've imagined something so sick and twisted. -Tommy Lee

We need to realize that these are beings that suffer the same as we suffer, they want freedom the way we want freedom. -Russell Simmons

All the violence and suffering in my films is pretend—no one is hurt, ever. Sadly, the same is not true at SeaWorld, which targets their entertainment at families and children. -Eli Roth

Only movie I want to go see this week: Blackfish. Watch out, Sea World. We are on to you. -Olivia Wilde

I've seen the photos of people getting splashed and it looks fun, but when you look underneath you see the dark side. What they do is slavery, plain and simple. -Ann Wilson

It's hard to fathom what those whales go through and how they've been treated. When you see the separation of the whale and their mother, nothing is more convincing than that. People making money from them are saying, 'We're protecting them. They're safe and sound, not out in the wild where they're in danger.' -Nancy Wilson

It's time to end animal enslavement for our entertainment. Boycott SeaWorld and the circus too. -Tony Kanal

People are really lacking creativity. They're spending 100s of dollars to take their children to see hurting animals at SeaWorld, risking their children seeing a human crushed, bitten, drowned and killed by an animal who has been stolen from its home and family and kept in a bathtub for 20 years. Make it a family tradition and take your babies on a boat ride to see these incredible animals in the wild. -Christian Serratos

  1. I agree with you !

Hey there, planet earth and the “humans” that live there… Mother Nature can take care of herself, thank you. You can make your money (satisfy your need for greed) by visiting the animals in their world, instead of locking them up in our world. Oh, and while you’re a guest in their world, remember, just look and don’t touch or feed them.
