Something to think about …….

~~April 22, 2014~~

What day of the week is Earth Day 2014?

This observance always falls on April 22. On Earth Day, enjoy the tonic of fresh air, contact with the soil, and companionship with nature! Walk through the woods in search of emerging wildflowers and green moss. Go outside, no matter what the weather!

~~Earth Day History~~

Ever wondered how Earth Day started? This observance arose from an interest in gathering national support for environmental issues. In 1970, San Francisco activist John McConnell and Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson separately asked Americans to join in a grassroots demonstration. McConnell chose the spring equinox (March 21, 1970) and Nelson chose April 22. Millions of people participated, and today Earth Day continues to be widely celebrated with events on both dates.

The most common practice of celebration is to plant new trees for Earth Day.

Angela Lansbury ….. Call her “Dame” now!

~~April 22, 2014~~

Dame Angela Brigid LansburyDBE (born 16 October 1925) is a British-American actress and singer who has appeared in theatre, television, and films.

Her career has spanned seven decades, much of it based in the United States, and her work has attracted international attention.

Lansbury was born in central London to actress Moyna MacGill and politician Edgar Lansbury. In 1940, she moved to New York City in the United States, where she studied acting. Proceeding to HollywoodLos Angeles in 1942, she signed to MGM and got her first film roles, in Gaslight (1944), National Velvet, and The Picture of Dorian Gray (1945), earning two Oscar nominations and a Golden Globe Award.

She appeared in eleven further MGM films, mostly in minor roles, and after her contract ended in 1952 she began supplementing her cinematic work with theatrical appearances. Although her appearance in the film adaptation of The Manchurian Candidate (1962) was widely acclaimed, she only gained theatrical stardom for her starring role in the Broadway musical Mame (1966).

Relocating from California to County Cork, Ireland in 1970, she continued with a variety of theatrical and cinematic appearances throughout that decade.

She assumed ownership of the series and was executive producer for the final four seasons. She also moved into voice work, thereby contributing to animated films like Beauty and the Beast (1991). ~~Personal life~~

Lansbury describes herself as “an amalgam of British, Irish and American” although throughout her life has spoken with a British accent. Lansbury has been married twice; first to the actor Richard Cromwell, when she was 19 and Cromwell was 35. Cromwell and Lansbury eloped and were married in a small civil ceremony on September 27, 1945. The marriage ended in divorce in 1946 and they remained friends until his death in 1960.

In 1949 she married actor Peter Shaw, and they remained together for 54 years until his death in 2003; she asserted that “We had the perfect relationship. Not many people can say that.” They had two children, Anthony Peter Shaw (born January 7, 1952) and Deirdre Angela Shaw (born April 26, 1953). Lansbury repeatedly stated her desire to put her children before her career, but ended up leaving them in California when she was working in other parts of the country for long periods.

In the latter part of the 1960’s, both Anthony and Deirdre became involved in the growing counterculture movement and started using recreational drugs. Deirdre developed an acquaintance with the Manson family, while Anthony became addicted to cocaine and heroin, giving it up in 1971. Anthony became a television director, and directed 68 episodes of Murder, She Wrote, also marrying and having three children. Deirdre married a chef and together opened a restaurant in West Los Angeles. Lansbury’s cousins include the animator, writer and social activist Oliver Postgate, as well as the academic and novelist Coral Lansbury, whose son Malcolm Turnbull became a noted Australian politician.

As a young actress, Lansbury was a self-professed homebody, commenting that “I love the world of housekeeping.” She preferred spending quiet evenings inside with friends to the Hollywood night life. Her hobbies at the time included reading, horse riding, playing tennis, cooking, and playing the piano, also having a keen interest in gardening. In 2014, it was reported that she continued to enjoy gardening, and also enjoyed doing crosswords. She disliked flattery, and had what biographer Martin Gottfried described as “a profound sense of privacy.”

She is a supporter of the U.S. Democratic Party and the U.K. Labor Party.

Angela Lansbury knows there is nothing like a dame, and now she is one.

It was announced in December 2013, that the beloved, British-born actress was on the list to receive damehood for her services to drama and to charitable work and philanthropy.

On Tuesday, April 15, 2014, Queen Elizabeth officially bestowed the DBE (Dame Commander of the British Empire) honor on Lansbury, 88, at Windsor Castle. Lansbury is currently starring in a production of Blithe Spirit in West End.

Dame Angela, who left Britain as a child, said: “It is a very proud day for me to be recognized by the country of my birth, and to meet the Queen under these circumstances is a rare and lovely occasion,” reports Sky News.

The “Murder, She Wrote” actress joins a select group of acting Dames, including Judi Dench and Maggie Smith. Lansbury already has a already has a CBE, or Commander of the British Empire.

Dame is the female equivalent of the honor of knighthood in the British honors system and several other countries such as Australia (The word “damehood” is rarely used but is shown on the official British Monarchy website as being the correct term). It is the equivalent form of address to “Sir” for knights.

A woman appointed to the grades of Dame Commander or Dame Grand Cross of the Most Honorable Order of the Bath, the Most Distinguished Order of Saint Michael and Saint George, the Royal Victorian Order, or the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire becomes a dame.

Because there is no female equivalent to a Knight Bachelor, women are always appointed to an order of chivalry. Women who are appointed to the Most Noble Order of the Garter or the Most Ancient and Most Noble Order of the Thistle are not given the title of “Dame” but “Lady“.

Formerly, a knight’s wife was given the title of “Dame” before her name, but this usage was replaced by “Lady” during the 17th century.

Google Doodle …. Earth Day 2014!!

~~April 22, 2014~~

This year’s (2014) Earth Day is being celebrated with an interactive Google doodle.

World number one google search engine home page featuring different species wishes.

Earth Day is held every year on April 22 to highlight green issues.

Events are held around the world to demonstrate support for environmental protection.

The first ever Earth Day was held in 1970, although the name and concept was pioneered a year earlier by activist John McConnell.

Planting trees is the most common way people support the day. Earth Day celebrated in more than 192 countries each year around the world.

Numerous communities celebrate Earth Week, an entire week of activities focused on environmental issues.

Earth Day is an annual event, celebrated on April 22, on which events are held worldwide to demonstrate support for environmental protection. It was first celebrated in 1970, and is now coordinated globally by the Earth Day Network, and celebrated in more than 192 countries each year.

In 1969 at a UNESCO Conference in San Francisco, peace activist John McConnell proposed a day to honor the Earth and the concept of peace, to first be celebrated on March 21, 1970, the first day of spring in the northern hemisphere. This day of nature’s equipoise was later sanctioned in a Proclamation written by McConnell and signed by Secretary General U Thant at the United Nations.

A month later a separate Earth Day was founded by United States Senator Gaylord Nelson as an environmental teach-in first held on April 22, 1970. Nelson was later awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom Award in recognition of his work. While this April 22 Earth Day was focused on the United States, an organization launched by Denis Hayes, who was the original national coordinator in 1970, took it international in 1990 and organized events in 141 nations.

Numerous communities celebrate Earth Week, an entire week of activities focused on environmental issues.

~~Earth Day 1970~~

The first Earth Day family had participants and celebrants in two thousand colleges and universities, roughly ten thousand primary and secondary schools, and hundreds of communities across the United States. More importantly, it “brought 20 million Americans out into the spring sunshine for peaceful demonstrations in favor of environmental reform.”

It now is observed in 192 countries, and coordinated by the nonprofit Earth Day Network, chaired by the first Earth Day 1970 organizer Denis Hayes, according to whom Earth Day is now “the largest secular holiday in the world, celebrated by more than a billion people every year.” Environmental groups have sought to make Earth Day into a day of action which changes human behavior and provokes policy changes.

~~Earth Day anthem~~

There are many songs that are performed on Earth Day, that generally fall into two categories. Popular songs by contemporary artists not specific to Earth Day that are under copyright or new lyrics adapted to children’s songs. UNESCO has termed Indian poet-diplomat Abhay K’s idea of an official Earth Anthem as a creative and inspiring thought that would contribute to bringing the world together.

Earth Anthem” by Abhay K is in eight languages including all official languages of the United Nations viz. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, Spanish. The other two languages are Hindi and Nepali. It was launched in June 2013 on the occasion of the World Environment Day by Kapil Sibal and Shashi Tharoor, Union Ministers of India at a function organized by the Indian Council of Cultural Relations in New Delhi. India’s Central Board of Secondary Education or CBSE has started using it for educational purposes.

Earth Anthem written, produced by poet Abhay K in eight different languages of the world viz. English, French, Spanish, Arabic, Russian, Chinese, Hindi and Nepali.

The Anthem has been sung by Nepali singer Shreya Sotang, music has been given by Sapan Ghimire.

The “Earth Day Anthem” below satisfies these requirements for a universal song associated with Earth Day. Ludwig van Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy” melody is already the official anthem of the European Union (in that case purely instrumental without lyrics), the melody is widely recognized and easily performed, in the public domain, and originally composed for voice.

Lyrics for the Earth Day Anthem set to “Ode to Joy”

Joyful joyful we adore our Earth in all its wonderment

Simple gifts of nature that all join into a paradise
Now we must resolve to protect her
Show her our love throughout all time
With our gentle hand and touch
We make our home a newborn world
Now we must resolve to protect her
Show her our love throughout all time
With our gentle hand and touch

We make our home a newborn world

~~The Earth Day name~~

According to Nelson, the moniker “Earth Day” was “an obvious and logical name” suggested by “a number of people” in the fall of 1969, including, he writes, both “a friend of mine who had been in the field of public relations” and “a New York advertising executive,”Julian Koenig. Koenig, who had been on Nelson’s organizing committee in 1969, has said that the idea came to him by the coincidence of his birthday with the day selected, April 22; “Earth Day” rhyming with “birthday,” the connection seemed natural. Other names circulated during preparations — Nelson himself continued to call it the National Environment Teach-In, but national coordinator Denis Hayes used the term Earth Day in his communications and press coverage of the event was “practically unanimous” in its use of “Earth Day,” so the name stuck.

The introduction of the name “Earth Day” was also claimed by John McConnell, see below under “Equinox Earth Day”.

Sexual abuse by nuns in the Netherlands

Very well expressed … a “tidy” secret!!! SMH …

Dear Kitty. Some blog

This video from Australia says about itself:

Sexual Abuse is in the DNA of Catholic Church – ABC News / Lateline

27 February 2013

Former monk and priest, and now advocate for victims of sexual abuse within the Catholic Church, Patrick J Wall, says sexual abuse of children has been part of the culture of the Catholic Church as far back as 60 AD and despite constant attempts by the Popes to curtain the problem, it has never been snuffed out.

Translated from NOS TV in the Netherlands:

Abuse by nuns recognized less often

Update: Tuesday 22 April 2014, 12:33

Sexual abuse within the Roman Catholic Church by women is recognized relatively less often than abuse by men. The commission for reporting sexual abuse within the Roman Catholic Church received a total of 59 complaints. In 8 of the 22 completed cases so far, the complaint was upheld.

Earth Day Memories, then and now~

Love it!!! Looking good ….

tahtonka - A Journey Through Global Culture

Stuntman Dar Robinson and Actor/Environmentalist Iron Eyes Cody, two kind and gentle men.

Many years ago in California, I had the privilege of meeting a person who was often shown in commercials to tug at the heart-strings of us all,  to treat our Planet or Mother Earth better.

This man and I were introduced one night at the Artists and Models Ball in the late 1980′s.

I had been sent to cover the event for the Entertainment section of the LA newspaper I worked for at the time.

Meeting him that night,  I was struck by his gentle, kind demeanor.

He truly was, exactly like the person he portrayed in the Environmental commercials for so many years.

His name was Iron Eyes Cody, or as those of us in California loved to call him, The Crying Indian.

He made a huge impact, just as he and this commercial were meant to do, on the status of a beleaguered Earth…

To start the day …. thank you friends!!

~~April 22, 2014~~

Some of you know that I had a difficult day yesterday.

My main goal it to put the incident behind me. There’s no importance in things that are unimportant. There’s no importance to things that have no value. The world goes on and so does my life.

Today is s a better day thanks to the friends who stepped up to offer words of comfort. For that I’m very grateful.

Friendship is a relationship of mutual affection between two or more people.

Friendship is a stronger form of interpersonal bond than an association. Friendship has been studied in academic fields such as sociologysocial psychologyanthropology, and philosophy. Various academic theories of friendship have been proposed, including social exchange theoryequity theoryrelational dialectics, and attachment styles. A World Happiness Database study found that people with close friendships are happier.

Although there are many forms of friendship, some of which may vary from place to place, certain characteristics are present in many types of friendship. Such characteristics include affection, sympathyempathyhonestyaltruism, mutual understanding and compassion, enjoyment of each other’s company, trust, and the ability to be oneself, express one’s feelings, and make mistakes without fear of judgment from the friend.

While there is no practical limit on what types of people can form a friendship, friends tend to share common backgrounds, occupations, or interests, and have similar demographics.

“Don’t walk behind me; I may not lead. Don’t walk in front of me; I may not follow. Just walk beside me and be my friend.”
~Albert Camus~

“If you live to be a hundred, I want to live to be a hundred minus one day so I never have to live without you.”
~~A.A. MilneWinnie-the-Pooh~~

“There is nothing I would not do for those who are really my friends. I have no notion of loving people by halves, it is not my nature.”
~~Jane AustenNorthanger Abbey~~

“I think if I’ve learned anything about friendship, it’s to hang in, stay connected, fight for them, and let them fight for you. Don’t walk away, don’t be distracted, don’t be too busy or tired, don’t take them for granted. Friends are part of the glue that holds life and faith together. Powerful stuff.”
~~Jon Katz~~

“When we honestly ask ourselves which person in our lives mean the most to us, we often find that it is those who, instead of giving advice, solutions, or cures, have chosen rather to share our pain and touch our wounds with a warm and tender hand. The friend who can be silent with us in a moment of despair or confusion, who can stay with us in an hour of grief and bereavement, who can tolerate not knowing, not curing, not healing and face with us the reality of our powerlessness, that is a friend who cares.”
~~Henri J.M. NouwenOut of Solitude: Three Meditations on the Christian Life~~

“Friendship is the hardest thing in the world to explain. It’s not something you learn in school. But if you haven’t learned the meaning of friendship, you really haven’t learned anything.”
~~Muhammad Ali~~
