At the end of the day …. The Piano Guys Series #16!

~~April 24, 2014~~

The Piano Guys are an American musical group consisting of Jon SchmidtSteven Sharp Nelson, Paul Anderson, and Al van der Beek.

They gained popularity through YouTube, where they posted piano and cello renditions of popular songs and classical music. Schmidt and Nelson’s music is accompanied by professional-quality videos shot and edited by Paul Anderson.

Paul Anderson owned a piano shop in St. George, Utah. He met musician Jon Schmidt as the latter walked in to ask if he could practice there for an upcoming concert. Months later, Paul Anderson and Tel Stewart (then just for fun) started making videos together with Jon Schmidt. It was not too long after that they did their first collaboration with Jon Schmidt, Steven Sharp Nelson, and Al Van Der Beek as the studio and music technician. After the five of them started collaborating the group really started to take off, producing a music video each week and posting it to YouTube.

Several of the group’s YouTube videos have over 20 million views, while all of them have over 750,000. As of February 2014, The Piano Guys’ YouTube channel has over 345 million total video views and about 2,500,000 subscribers.

The Piano Guys is the second studio album, and first on a major record label, by American musical group The Piano Guys. It was released on October 2, 2012 through Sony Masterworks. The album is composed primarily of covers and mashups of classical and popular music.

Today we are featuring “Nearer My God to Thee” from their first CD with a major record label.

Nearer, My God, to Thee” is a 19th-century Christian hymn by Sarah Flower Adams, based loosely on Genesis 28:11–19, the story of Jacob’s dream.

Genesis 28:11–12 can be translated as follows: “So he came to a certain place and stayed there all night, because the sun had set. And he took one of the stones of that place and put it at his head, and he lay down in that place to sleep. Then he dreamed, and behold, a ladder was set up on the earth, and its top reached to heaven; and there the angels of God were ascending and descending on it ….”

The hymn is well known, among other uses, as the alleged last song the band on RMS Titanic played before the ship sank.

~~Story behind the song~~

This time we thought we’d reach back to our roots.

We rolled the cameras in a place where they have rolled many times before — Sundance, Utah. Steve has spent many summers there in a cabin built by his grandfather. It’s also where he proposed to his wife (she said yes, by the way). Such an incredible place of beauty and raw nature merited a piece of music that matched the setting.

This arrangement of Nearer My God to Thee was the first song Steve and Al recorded together. It is based upon and inspired by an arrangement of James Stevens for 9 voices (arranged for the BYU singing group “Vocal Point”).

For us music often is a spiritual experience — a way to connect with others, with nature, and with a loving God. This video is not meant to exclude those that do not believe in God. We hope everyone can find beauty in this music and relate it to how they feel when they experience joy—whether it’s joy from hiking in nature, spending time with family, serving others, or relaxing on a beach. Enjoy!

Filmed at Stewart Falls in Sundance, Utah

With this song, we complete the series for the first music CD. Lucky for us, there is a second one. We will continue The Series with the songs listed on the back of CD number two.

“Bridge over troubled water” …. Simon and Garfunkel

~~April 24, 2014~~

This song brings back so many memories. The music, the lyrics, the message. Resonating so much … within. Back then and still now.

In these times of stress, problems, trials and tribulation, this song comes to mind. It soothes and helps me relax.

“When you’re weary, feeling small
When tears are in your eyes
I will dry them all

I’m on your side
Oh when times get rough
And friends just can’t be found

Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down …. “

The words say it all … the power of music!!

Bridge over Troubled Water” is the title song of Simon & Garfunkel‘s album of the same name. The single was released on January 26, 1970, though it also appears on the live album Live 1969, released in 2008. It reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart on February 28, 1970, and stayed at the top of the chart for six weeks. “Bridge over Troubled Water” also topped the adult contemporary chart in the U.S. for six weeks. The single has sold 6 million copies worldwide.

This song’s recording process exposed many of the underlying tensions that eventually led to the breakup of the duo after the album’s completion. Most notably, Paul Simon has repeatedly expressed regret over his insistence that Art Garfunkel sing his song as a solo, as it focused attention on Garfunkel and relegated Simon to a secondary position. Art Garfunkel initially did not want to sing lead vocal, feeling it was not right for him. “He felt I should have done it,” Paul Simon revealed to Rolling Stone in 1972.

Garfunkel said that the moment when he performed it at a 1972 Madison Square Garden benefit concert, as part of a one-off reunion with Simon, was “almost biblical.”

In performances on the 2003 “Old Friends” tour, Simon and Garfunkel took turns singing alternate verses of the vocal.

It was ranked number 48 on Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

Giant Hanuman Sculpture …. 26, 500 Bells!

~~April 24, 2014~~

This 26 ft sculpture was installed by the folks at Charuvi Design Labs to promote their animated film Shri Hanuman ChalisaApproximately 26,500 bells were used to make this grand piece of interactive art.

When one touches Lord Hanuman’s paduka, the whole sculpture rings and the vibrations make you feel His blessings. Ingenious!

You can watch the teaser of the film, which has been screened in 20 international film festivals so far. The film shall be available in the form of an interactive application for tablets and also in form of a graphic book.

This video is going to prove those wrong, who think science and faith cannot come together.

Watch these guys at Charuvi Design Labs give shape to this unique amalgamation, in the most gigantic form possible. They used 26,500 bells to give shape to their dream of creating a huge Lord Hanumanstructure. What’s more, this structure is interactive.

When you touch Lord Hanuman’s padukas (feet), the bells start chiming and the whole structure seems to be coming alive.

Bell sound is considered quite auspicious in Hinduism.

Barbra Streisand …. timeless!!

~~April 24, 2014~~

Happy birthday to one of the most pivotal figures in music, Barbra Streisand!

On April 24, 1942, Barbra Joan Streisand was born in Brooklyn, New York to Diana Rosen, and Emanuel Streisand. When she was only 15 months old, her father, a high school English teacher, passed away from complications of an epileptic seizure. He left Barbra’s mother, a secretary at a New York City public school, to raise Barbra and her older brother, Sheldon, on her own. “When I was maybe 5 or 6 years old, the neighborhood girls would sit on the stoop and sing. I was known as the kid who had a good voice and no father,” Streisand later told Oprah Winfrey.

Barbra Streisand wasn’t conventionally beautiful, but her talent made up for all that.

In the 1960’s, she went against what most people advised and refused to get a nose job. Her stepfather told her she wasn’t pretty enough to be a star, but Streisand ignored all that. And her look became her asset. (One contemporary fan is Lady Gaga, who remarks, “She’s such a pivotal figure in music. As a performer, she’s always been so different from everybody else around.”)

Barbra Streisand became an actress, singer, director, writer, composer, producer. designer, author, photographer, and activist. She is the only artist ever to receive Oscar, Tony, Emmy, Grammy, Directors Guild of America, Golden Globe, National Medal of Arts and Peabody Awards, and France’s Légion d’honneur, as well as the American Film Institute’s Lifetime Achievement Award. She is also the first female film director to receive the Kennedy Center Honors.

The three films she directed received 14 Oscar nominations. She has sold 72.5 million albums and is an eight-time Grammy Award winner.

But, as she told Oprah, “I think of myself as a girl from Brooklyn.”

I can’t remember how old I was when I became aware of this incredibly, amazing singer from Brooklyn. I don’t think that I was older than 10-12 years. I do remember listening to her singing through one of my cousins. We were visiting my family and he was playing and LP record and this wonderful singing was coming through the speakers.

Music has always been a very important part of my life.

And there began my strong admiration of Ms. Barbra.

I followed her every move. I bought all of her music records. I loved all her movies. My favorites where the ones where her incredible humor was featured. (Remember when she was in the musical review and when she turned she showed a pregnant abdomen? Remember the movie “The Owl and the Pussycat” with George Seagel? Or “The Main Event” with Ryan O’Neal?)

Memories indeed!

Barbra Joan Streisand (born Barbara Joan Streisand, April 24, 1942) is an American singer-songwriterauthor, actress, writer, film producer, and director. She has won two Academy Awards, eight Grammy Awards, five Emmy Awards including one Daytime Emmy, a Special Tony Award, an American Film Institute award, a Kennedy Center Honors award, a Peabody Award and is one of the few entertainers who have won an Oscar, Emmy, Grammy, and Tony Award.

She is one of the best selling female artists of all time, with more than 71.5 million albums in the United States and 245 million records sold worldwide. She is the best-selling female artist on the Recording Industry Association of America‘s (RIAA) Top Selling Album Artists list, the only female recording artist in the top ten, and the only artist outside of the rock and roll genre.

After beginning a successful recording career in the 1960’s, by the end of the decade, Streisand ventured into film starring in the critically acclaimed Funny Girl, for which she won the Academy Award and Golden Globe Award for Best Actress. Other notable films include The Owl and the PussycatThe Way We Were and A Star Is Born for which she received her second Academy Award for composing the music to the picture’s main song, “Evergreen“. By the 1980s, Streisand established herself as one of the film industry’s most notable figures by becoming the first woman to direct, produce, script and star in her own picture.

According to the RIAA, Streisand holds the record for the most top ten albums of any female recording artist – a total of 32 since 1963. Streisand has the widest span (48 years) between first and latest top ten albums of any female recording artist. With her 2009 album, Love Is the Answer, she became one of the rare artists to achieve number one albums in five consecutive decades.

According to the RIAA, she has released 51 Gold albums, 30 Platinum albums, and 13 Multi-Platinum albums in the United States.

** Due to a VERY ugly  comment just made, it must be explained that the animals at this facility are injured and brought to them, they do not go out and look for them.  If you had bothered to read their website you would have learned that.**

OK,  who doesn’t love a baby shower?
But for this one,  you can leave the bibs and diapers at home and instead bring bird seed and kibble.

You see the babies that this shower is being held  for,  all  have either feathers or  fur.

Tragic Outcomes likely as Uganda May Refuse Bail on Gay-Sex Charges

This is the way it it in Uganda!! Fair? Right? Don’t think so ….

By Melanie Nathan, April 24, 2014.

Screen Shot 2014-04-23 at 9.43.39 PMPlease read Colin Stewart’s article at 76 Crimes- about the men who are accused of homosexual relations and are not getting bail in Uganda.  The complexity of surety bail can be noted. While the courts may have been willing to grant bail under the old Penal Codes, it is less likely that bail will be considered under the new onerous AHA which provides for many years in prison, making flight more likely.

Please consider supporting my Rescue Fund as we support Ugandan LGBTI people currently in hiding or exiled by Uganda’s state sanctioned homophobic laws.

If we do not support LGBTI people in domestic exile, more will be arrested and there will be no opportunity for them to escape the mandated 14 years to life in prison,as they continue to be refused bail. In this case, though the men were charged under the old…
