The Red String of Fate …. a legend or truth!!

~~June 4, 2014~~

The red string of fate, also referred to as the red thread of destinyred thread of fate, and other variants, is an East Asian belief originating from Chinese legend and is also used in Japanese legend.

According to this myth, the gods tie a red cord around the ankles of those that are to meet one another in a certain situation or help each other in a certain way. Often, in Japanese culture, it is thought to be tied around the little finger. According to Chinese legend, the deity in charge of “the red thread” is believed to be Yuè Xià Lǎo, the old lunar matchmaker god who is also in charge of marriages.

The two people connected by the red thread are destined lovers, regardless of time, place, or circumstances. This magical cord may stretch or tangle, but never break.

This myth is similar to the Western concept of soulmates or a destined flame.

~~Folklore~~

One story featuring the red string of fate involves a young boy. Walking home one night, a young boy sees an old man standing beneath the moonlight (Yuè Xià Lǎo). The man explains to the boy that he is attached to his destined wife by a red thread. Yuè Xià Lǎo shows the boy the young girl who is destined to be his wife.

Being young and having no interest in having a wife, the young boy picks up a rock and throws it at the girl, running away. Many years later, when the boy has grown into a young man, his parents arrange a wedding for him. On the night of his wedding, his wife waits for him in their bedroom, with the traditional veil covering her face. Raising it, the man is delighted to find that his wife is one of the great beauties of his village.

However, she wears an adornment on her eyebrow. He asks her why she wears it and she responds that when she was a young girl, a boy threw a rock at her that struck her, leaving a scar on her eyebrow. She self-consciously wears the adornment to cover it up. The woman is, in fact, the same young girl connected to the man by the red thread shown to him by Yuè Xià Lǎo back in his childhood, showing that they were connected by the red string of fate.

    • I looked for videos of the red thread story. Didn’t find one I liked so chose Lady in Red, one of MJ’s faves.
The thread gets tangled but will never break. There’s still your connection there!!

  4. It may be a myth and folklore but the truth of the way things are connected is certainly a truth represented by the story. I think the Adam and Eve story is also a myth but certainly illustrates our separation from God and need for reconnect and redemption. However, I differ with the story in that humankind evicted God from the Garden not vice verse as traditionally understood.

      • Lucky you. No soul mate for me since divorced 1984 and have been the sole caretaker of my parents last 13 years. Mother passed 3 years ago so it’s just Dad and me now. He’s a fully alert and spry fellow at 91. I really do feel my children and grandchildren substitute for that soul mate very well but there will be a time I know when will be very much alone. Well then I can think up cartoons without any bothers.

  5. Oh this reminds me of a japanese story I heard about. Yumiko Suzumiya tried a myth where you look over a bowl of water with a sharp blade in your mouth and you’ll see your future lover. A face appeared in the water, in shock she dropped the blade from her mouth and it fell into the water but the water turned blood red. Ten years later Yumiko went on a date with a man who wore a mask, she asked why he wore it and her replied,”It covers a scar.” After that she did not question his mask. Their relationship grew and on the night before they were to wed, she asked him if he could remove his mask. When he did, she was shocked to discover a scar that ran across the face that she saw in the water a decade earlier.

      • Well, I’m just 19 years old teenager. I searched for the information regarding the red string of fate, it is applied in Japanese culture as well. But, isn’t it that we are the one who decide who we choose to marry to? Sorry, I’m just a bit curious. XD

      • No need to be sorry … Well, I’ll try to answer your question with my personal story … I met my friend in 1969, while we were in college. We were 19 & 20 years old then. Both of us were born in the same country.
I was raised where I was born. She moved to the US when she was 12.
After college, both of us went our own way … life separated us for 24 years, even though we communicated some … then in 1996 (notice the inverted numbers) we met again … and been together since. I called this ‘life coming full circle’ … been together since. Known each other for 48 years, together for 21 … how does that sound!?
And to ‘complicate’ this a bit more, if you believe in past lives, we’ve been together there too! __/l\__
