Something to think about …. Masks!!

~~August 18, 2014~~

A mask is an object normally worn on the face, typically for protection, disguise, performance or entertainment. Masks have been used since antiquity for both ceremonial and practical purposes.

They are usually worn on the face, although they may also be positioned for effect elsewhere on the wearer’s body, so in parts of Australia giant totem masks cover the body, whilst Inuit women use finger masks during storytelling and dancing.

~~Masks in theatre~~

Masks are an important part of many theater forms throughout world cultures, and their usage in theater has often developed from, or continues to be part of old, highly sophisticated, stylized theatrical traditions.

In many cultural traditions the masked performer is a central concept and is highly valued. In the western tradition actors in Ancient Greek theater wore masks, as they do in traditional Japanese Noh drama.

In some Greek masks the wide and open mouth of the mask contained a brass megaphone enabling the voice of the wearer to be projected into the large auditoria. In medieval Europe masks were used in mystery and miracle plays to portray allegorical creatures, and the performer representing God frequently wore a gold or gilt mask.

“Are we really happy with
This lonely game we play
Looking for the right words to say
Searching but not finding
Understanding anyway
We’re lost in this masquerade

Both afraid to say we’re just too far away
From being close together from the start
We tried to talk it over
But the words got in the way
We’re lost inside this lonely game we play …. “

This song always had a very special meaning for me. I love Karen Carpenter. Her voice was sultry, velvety and so ever changing.

We are living difficult times. We don’t really know who is telling the truth in so many spheres and arenas. Personal, religious, political, markets, financial and commerce, military, legal, environmental … you name it.

“Sometimes it’s not the people who change. It’s the mask that falls off.”

We ALL are connected through HUMANITY!!

We ALL are ONE!!

  1. Yes, this is the truth isn’t it. Sometimes though, I think we just exchange them. Find more fitting, more comfortable masks. Ones that fit our needs and allow us to walk through the world more easily.

  2. Yes, I believe we all wear masks. Sometimes, even to ourselves. Only those we trust totally, may see what’s behind it. Thanks, Horty, for this music. Karen Carpenter is one of my favorites. xo

  3. I needed to hear this today. Thank you! Your blog is great and I enjoy reading it when I can. And, I agree with you, we are all interconnected…we are ONE…and how delicate our words are to one another and how careful we need to choose them…I began my life not speaking much…gradually I spoke more…now, I am returning to speaking less, because of the power of words…(though, I do have a blog! 🙂 Blessings to you and your sharing of your knowledge! Thank you so much!

  4. So true and so difficult to remove the mask. If I remove the mask, I could be faceless, friendless, family-less. I tend to be a very honest person, actually. Some people say I am too honest for my own good. Then I am fooled by people who “wear” masks, because I think they will be as honest with me as I am with them! Still I would rather be who I am. I will still love and seek to be ME more and more and remove the mask. Great article!

  5. Fantastic post!! Loved Karen too and listening to this song brought back so much. Going to have to pull out some of her oldies today. I too believe we all wear masks at certain times and I have been fooled many times in the past by people’s masks. Well blogged!! 🙂

  6. We all wear masks online, to a point. We can’t give the World our full life..Bad choice if we do.
    I agree…Seen it a million times.

    Being real is hard
Wearing a mask to hide your/our/anyones issues is very easy to do
