As if life isn’t hard enough for homeless people these days, Police Officer Brian Lightner took it up a notch.

The WV Gazette reports that after confronting and arresting the allegedly drunken and disorderly 26-year-old Andrew Joel Hunt, the Charleston, WV cop  tossed the homeless man’s backpack into the Elk River just for cruel spite. When Hunt got out of jail, he filed a complaint against Officer Lightner.

Among Hunt’s grievances was that his backpack contained a laptop with the only photos of his deceased wife he owns.

Hunt’s charges were dismissed and the Charleston police department’s dive team fished his backpack from the river. Unfortunately, the data from the waterlogged laptop is probably unrecoverable.

Lightner has been suspended over the incident, and the police department awarded Hunt an undisclosed settlement.
