‘Today’ Staffers Moved to Tears Over Hotb Kotb, Cyndi Lauper, Sara Bareilles Video

“Today” show anchor Hoda Kotb, along with singers/songwriters Sara Bareilles, Cyndi Lauper are joining forces as part of the “Today” show’s “Shine a Light” outreach campaign.
With the song “Truly Brave,” a mashup of Bareilles’ “Brave” and Lauper’s “True Colors,” the trio hopes to raise money for the fight against pediatric cancer. The “Truly Brave” video features young cancer patients from The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. We’re told several crew members and staffers were moved to tears in the studio and control room when the video debuted on the show.

At the beginning of 2014, NBC’s TODAY Show unveiled a new outreach project called “Shine a Light,” a year-long initiative focused on service and giving back to communities in need. Each TODAY show anchor and host chose a worthy cause to support throughout the year. Co-host Hoda Kotb designated pediatric cancer as her cause and chose the American Cancer Society as her benefitting charity.
As part of Hoda’s Shine A Light campaign, she brought together two superstars to create one special song. Music icons Sara Bareilles and Cyndi Lauper teamed up to produce a masterful mash-up song titled “Truly Brave” to raise awareness for pediatric cancer. The song and music video, which was shot at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, debuted on Thursday, September 25, on NBC’s TODAY.
Funds raised through Hoda’s “Shine a Light” initiative will directly support pediatric cancer research through the Society’s extramural research program. Decisions about which specific childhood research grants will receive funding will be finalized once the “Shine a Light” campaign is complete. The American Cancer Society is currently investing more than $23 million in research grants to study childhood cancers.
