The Red Birds have a special meaning …. “Cardinals”!!

Red5

~~April 17, 2015~~

The northern cardinal is so well loved that it has been named the official bird of no fewer than seven U.S. states. Bright red cardinals are easily identified by even casual bird watchers, and are often seen frequenting backyards and bird feeders. When foraging elsewhere the birds eat insects, seeds, grain, fruit, and sap.

Cardinals, also called “redbirds,” do not migrate and have traditionally been more common in warmer climes such as the U.S. southeast. However, in recent decades they have expanded their common range north through the United States and even into Canada. This population growth may be due to an increase in winter bird-feeders and to the bird’s ability to adapt to parks and suburban human habitats.

Only males sport the brilliant red plumage for which their species is known. The color is a key to mating success — the brighter the better. Females are an attractive tan/gray.

Cardinals are active songbirds and sing a variety of different melodies.

A cardinal is a representative of a loved one who has passed. When you see one, it means they are visiting you. They usually show up when you most need them or miss them.

They also make an appearance during times of celebration as well as despair to let you know they will always be with you.

Look for them, they’ll appear.

~~Northern Cardinal~~

Mini-Documentary

~~Uploaded on Feb 6, 2009~~

Mini-documentary about the Northern Cardinal. It’s song look and habitat.

“With a crested head, black mask around its eyes and brilliant red body, the Northern Cardinal is one of the most famous birds in North America.

It is a mid-sized songbird that lives in wooded areas and has a distinct orange beak shaped perfectly for eating seeds which make up the majority of its diet.

The Northern Cardinal does not migrate. It is a year-round resident whose range extends from southern Canada to Mexico on the eastern half of the continent.

The plumage of the males feathers is much brighter and more vibrant than that of the females it is trying to attract.

It learns its song, so the tune of the cardinal will vary by region.

This beautiful bird is named after the cardinals in the Roman Catholic Church who wore red robes and caps.

It is the state bird in seven states – North Carolina, West Virginia, Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky and Virginia.”

  1. My grandparents loved to bird watch on their front porch or from their kitchen table. I hear birds of all kinds and think of them now that they are both gone, but I like that my favourite coloured bird, according to this post, means my loved ones are with me. Thank you for that thought.

  2. I lost my husband a few years ago and two weeks ago had to help my best friend, a mini poodle who was 17 yrs old, get to the Rainbow Bridge. I have been very sad, missing them both. Four days ago I looked out my kitchen window and, not even 2 ft away, was a female cardinal sitting on a nest in my rhododendron bush. Shortly the male appeared. They had 3 babies and I have had the joy of watching the parents feed them. I have no doubt that it was a message from above and I am so thankful.

  3. Today I saw one as I stepped outside my house I was about to turn left but i heard a bird chirping a few times louder and louder so i looked to my right and there was a cardinal to my right. Just standing there but when i pulled out my phone to take a picture it flew way. Yesterday I found out my uncle is very ill in PR wonder if this is why I saw it . Also my son was killed a year ago and someone told me that a cardinal means a spirit is near you. Since my son passed away this is the second time i see a cardinal

  4. I lost my husband in June. Moments after his passing, a male cardinal sat on our outside railing. This is the first time I ever saw a cardinal in our area.

  5. The cardinal is the Kentucky State bird, ya know Doc. My mom’s favorite. She could spend hours at her window watching them, never moving so she wouldn’t frighten them away. They were fun to see, but not sure which we enjoyed watching most — the birds outside or the sweet one we loved so much on the inside cautioning us to be still so we wouldn’t scare her birds away!

  9. For the past 4 months I have been seeing the red cardinal and I never before saw one. He is so beautiful and he tends to come when my heart feels a little heavy. He once flew right over my head very close to it. I now recognize his chirp and singing. If I’m home I can hear him so I come out to look for him. He really makes my heart so happy.

  11. Just wanted to share how I saw a red cardinal right after leaving my mothers funeral. We were all gathered at her house and it was about to be a heavy downpour of rain and the red cardinal was sitting on the powerline looking at us. I had no idea this was the meaning of seeing them. I had never noticed one until that day on Aug 11 . Well today my daughter text me and said she saw one at school in the window this morning looking right at her…I told her that was my mom checking on her. 🙂

  12. I lost my beautiful Son in August and I am so heartbroken, all I do is cry. A few weeks ago 2 red cardinals walked out of the woods in back of my condo. Yesterday, there was one in a tree outside my window and this morning I was walking his dog and crying for him and I saw one land in a tree right in front of me. When I looked back he was gone. I want to believe it was my Son. I don’t know any more.

My wife and I lost our beautiful son Rob on October 20, 2018. We are heart broken. Family members have said that they have felt his presence. A strang sound or a feeling of his nearness. On October 26th I noticed a beautiful red Cardinal sitting on the window sill. It stayed there for about 10 minutes fluttering its wings and looking at me through the window. We are overwhelmed with heart felt joy and happiness. The birds appearance to me was my sons way of telling us that he was with God and that Rob was ok. What a wonderful experience.

    • Dear James and Elinor … first of all, I’m so sorry for your loss!! There’s nothing that can compare.
On the other hand, I’m glad you stopped here and maybe found a bit of comfort in the cardinals’ story. I’m sure that your son has been visiting you!!
Always remember that he’s in your heart, your memories, your soul and your DNA. It will always be a sad memory but the pain lessen a tiny bit with time … always keep looking for cardinals!!

      Peace!! __/l\__ …. hugs! ❤ ….

  15. Dr. REX,
On April 27th of last year I had to let my best friend go as I held her for the last time. She was with me since she was 8 weeks old until she was 13 a few months from 14. She was the best lab and friend ever. The next day i saw three cardinals setting on my Moms deck where we visited often. I believe she was telling me she is ok and waiting for me.
I have not handled the loss well at all. I moved back in with my Mom and still see cardinals almost everyday. I think she is worried about me and keeping a close check on me. I’m hoping it’s her anyway. I’m getting closer to recovery as she watches me near by. Thank you you what you do!

  17. I have seen a red bird 2 days in a row. And I feel that it is my sweet mother who passed away in February 2011. She had Parkinsons disease and alzheimers. She didn’t even know me in the last few years of her life. But I believe she is sending me these red birds to let me know that she loves me and is in heaven watching over me.

I have 2 cardinals in my backyard. I leave food for them & they visit. They remind me of my mom … take care!! 🙏🏽

  18. My mom and mother-in- law are both decease. They both share a birthday in September. On Sunday while sitting in the living room with our 2 daughters and 1st grandchild whom our moms did not get a chance to meet saw a Red Robin resting on our porch rail. (Baltimore City) The Red Robin sat there long enough to take a photo before flying away. My though was I have a nice picture. The same day we decided to take balloons and flowers to our mom grave, the thought of the Robin came to mind and I decided to look it up to see what it mean, and came across your page. I was in oz of the spiritual meanings and the visit from love ones . We are a family of Faith so I share with my family what I read and they too was happy to hear what it means when a Red Robin visit. Thank you and Be Bless.
