“Redemption Song” is a song by Bob Marley.
It is the final track on Bob Marley & the Wailers’ ninth album, Uprising, produced by Chris Blackwell and released by Island Records. The song is considered one of Marley’s greatest works. Some key lyrics derived from a speech given by the Pan-Africanist orator Marcus Garvey.
At the time he wrote the song, circa 1979, Bob Marley had been diagnosed with the cancer in his toe that later took his life.
According to Rita Marley, “he was already secretly in a lot of pain and dealt with his own mortality, a feature that is clearly apparent in the album, particularly in this song”.
Bob Marley Reincarnated On ‘The Voice Of Holland’
Bob Marley has been reincarnated, in the form of a 40-year-old Dutch hospital worker named Mitchell Brunings. Well, maybe “reincarnated” isn’t the right word, since Mitchell would have been in grade school when Bob Marley died in 1981, but you get the idea.
Mitchell auditioned on The Voice of Holland last September, wowing the judges with his magnificent voice. According to Urban Islandz, the video of his audition, where he sings Bob’s “Redemption Song,” quickly went viral, grabbing more than 15 million views.
On his Reddit AMA (Ask Me Anything) last fall, Mitchell told readers:
I am originally from Surinam, a small country next to Brazil South America, and that is a definite influence on my musical preference!! I grew up listening to Caribbean music, salsa, merengue, reggae.
Unfortunately, Mitchell didn’t win, coming in second place to Julia Van Der Toorn. Let’s hope he has a long and successful career ahead of him regardless.
