Amnesty International slams Dominican Republic on ‘mass deportations’

Amnesty International said it is paying attention to the mass deportations of undocumented immigrants expected to start after the government program to legalize aliens concludes midnight tonight (Wednesday, June 17, 2015).

It said its delegation “is visiting the Dominican Republic until 27 June to monitor the processes of deportations of migrants announced by the Dominican government, where thousands of Dominicans of Haitian descent could be expelled from their own country.”

It said Dominican authorities have made clear that those migrants who didn’t register for the program to legalize aliens will be deported starting 6pm tomorrow, June 18.

“International standards governing deportation proceedings are absolutely clear: governments should examine each case individually and conduct a thorough and fair process, with the right to judicial appeal, before making a decision,” the human rights organization said in a statement
