To start the day … “Beyond #CecilTheLion … “!!

~~August 8, 20 15~~

I was traveling when this terrible tragedy happened.

I wasn’t near my PC and had no opportunity to post about this. I was following this story very closely on social media and found so many graphics and memes.

I was beyond myself, like many others, that this wonderful animal had been taken from this Earth in such a way.

Yet, this happens very frequently.

I’ve posted about trophy hunters, caned hunting, poaching, dwindling numbers of protected species among other topics.

The only one good thing about Cecil’s killing and worldwide outrage is that the issue of poaching and trophy hunting has been brought to the collective awareness.

Let’s hope that this doesn’t face away.

Cecil was a 13-year-old male Southwest African lion (Panthera leo bleyenberghi) who primarily lived in the Hwange National Park in Matabeleland North, Zimbabwe. He was a major attraction at the park and was being studied and tracked by the University of Oxford as part of a larger study.

Cecil was shot by Walter Palmer, an American recreational big-game hunter, from Minnesota, who had wounded him with an arrow. Cecil was then tracked, and on 1 July 2015, approximately 40 hours later, was killed with a rifle.

The killing drew international media attention and sparked outrage among animal conservationists, politicians and celebrities, as well as a strong negative response against Palmer. Two other men are being prosecuted in relation to the hunt, and the Zimbabwean government has stated it will seek Palmer’s extradition.

Walter Palmer reportedly paid US$50,000 to a professional hunter/guide, Theo Bronkhorst, to enable him to kill a lion.

Cecil was allegedly lured out of the sanctuary where he was shot and wounded with an arrow. He was tracked, and approximately 40 hours later was killed with a rifle. He was then skinned and his head was removed.

When his headless skeleton was found by park investigators, his tracking collar was missing.

The trophy hunting of Cecil the Lion by Walter Palmer became a global subject of outrage, and the world did anything but sit still. Here are some of the ways Cecil’s sad death was a force for good.

*After Cecil The Lion’s Death, Airlines Refuse To Ship Exotic Hunting Trophies*

Airlines this week began refusing to ship exotic animal-hunting trophies amid global revulsion to the killing of Cecil the lion.

Delta led the charge on Monday, announcing a ban on the freight shipment of all lion, leopard, elephant, rhinoceros and buffalo trophies worldwide. American Airlines soon followed suit, refusing to transport the same list of creatures, as well as many other airlines outside the USA.

  1. It is a crying shame a beautifull and majestic animal like Cecil needs to be murdered before “the public awereness” finally realises there is something fundamentally wrong with “recreational big game hunting” (someone has a mentos for me, need to clear my mouth)

I am not opposed hunting, there are valid reasons why some animals need to be hunted, we have done so for thousands of years and we “became part of the ecosystem” with that. So a certain amount of (food related) hunting must be there but….well… we don’t eat lions…..or leopards…. or cougar…or (god forbid) WOLF

love ya hun, thnks for sharing
