“It is painful to envision what a Trump presidency will mean for Mexicans, Puerto Ricans, and Latinos in general. Single-handedly, President Trump will throw out the U.S. Constitution, persecute Latinos, and create historic levels of racial animosity.”
The 14th Amendment reads as follows:
“All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and the state wherein they reside.”
This 14th Amendment was ratified in 1869 and upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court in 1898 (US v. Wong Kim Ark, 169 U.S. 649). In that case, the Court gave citizenship to the San Francisco-born son of Chinese nationals, and set the judicial precedent which still exists today.
For 146 years, birthright citizenship is the law of the land. In one sentence it looks like this:
U.S. BIRTH = U.S. CITIZENSHIP
It is that simple and clear.
But Donald Trump wants to throw out the 14th Amendment.
He doesn’t say how he’ll do it…he just will…in order to “make America great again.”
