The “Ponce Massacre” … another incident of “oppression” by the “powers that be” who had total control of the insular police!! The cartoon is right on target!!
The Ponce Massacre of March 21, 1937 left 19 people dead and over 200 wounded.
After the massacre the Puerto Rico Chief of Police, Enrique de Orbeta, engaged in immediate damage control. He claimed that Nationalist snipers had started the shooting, and his police acted only in “self-defense.”
He choreographed a series of photos to convey this narrative.
The following is one of them: as Chief de Orbeta and his men peer up at some unseen “sniper.”
But too many people had been shot. The entire island knew that Chief de Orbeta and Gov. Blanton Winship were lying.
Not a single weapon was found amongst any of the dead, maimed or wounded victims of the Ponce Massacre.
The Governor and Police Chief were lying so odiously, that the following cartoon appeared in Florete magazine.
