In 1948, Piñero returned the favor by passing Law 53, aka the Law of the Muzzle.
Law 53 made it a felony to criticize the US, to say or write anything about Puerto Rican independence, to sing La Borinqueña (the national anthem), or to own a Puerto Rican flag.
Law 53 violations were punishable by ten years in jail.
Immediately after signing Law 53, Gov. Piñero took a night flight out of Puerto Rico. He could “not be located” for several days.
