SOMOS ORLANDO

One week ago today, I woke up to the awful news of another mass shooting.

As details were informed, it became evident that a terrible tragedy had occurred.

There are several reasons that this event touched to close to my heart.

I’m a proud member of the LGBT community.

I live in Orlando and the club is less than 30 minutes from home.

I’m a very proud Puerto Rican.

I was born and raised in the Island.

I’ve lived in Florida since 1999.

I’ve lived in an Orlando “suburb” since 2006.

I could’ve very easily been a frequent patron of that bar.

I have close friends who were.

However, there’s something that doesn’t sit totally right with me as the names and details of the victims became public.

I read an article which described that the majority of the victims were “coloured Americans”.  Another spoke about Americans being gunned down.

Yet the fact that many were Puerto Ricans, who are American citizens, has been played down.

I would never intend to take away the important of those who were senselessly killed.

However, I strongly feel that his fact needs to be pointed out.

…. 23 of the 49 killed were Puerto Ricans.

After all, it WAS Latin night at the club.

Only that would have been reason enough for me to have been there!

This was not just an attack on the LGTBQ community, this was an attack on the Latin American/Puerto Rican community as well. THAT is a fact I have not heard enough in the media … not the US nor the worldwide media.

Stay strong and proud my friends from across the pond, you have loads of friends in Europe and around the world.
