At the end of the day …. “Mónica Puig …. on winning the Gold Medal in Tennis Women’s Singles …. “!!

~~August 14, 2016~~

Some may wonder why Puerto Rico competes as a separate nation when it’s a possession/colony of the USA.

All the 5 inhabited territories of the USA compete as independent nations.

The territories are  Puerto Rico, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and American Samoa.

Puerto Rico isn’t a state or part of the USA.

The Island’s political status is that of a “commonwealth”.

This is why this medal has made history in several fronts:

first ever Gold won by Puerto Rico in any Summer Olympic games,

unseeded player, ranked 34th in the world,

Angelique Kerber is ranked 2nd and the Australian Open Champion,

Puig’s last win was in 1988.

This medal was won by the proverbial “underdog”.

This medal belongs to Mónica and, through her, to Puerto Rico.

This one is for the books!

Thank you, Mónica …

From the heart!

“To her great credit, Puig was fully aware of the symbolic importance of her victory as a Puerto Rican athlete, representing her own island.

On the tennis court, in her very first interview after winning the gold, Puig said …

“This is for them.

I think I united a nation.

I just love where I come from.”

…. quote from “War Against All Puerto Ricans” blog!
