Darren Seals Jr. attends the 20th anniversary commemoration of the Million Man March.
Darren Seals Jr., a native of Ferguson, Missouri who rose to prominence as an activist in the immediate aftermath of the killing of Michael Brown Jr. two years ago, was found dead in his Jeep earlier this month under circumstances that suggest for many observers he was the victim of a targeted assassination. Not only did Seals, a vocal critic of police brutality and racism who co-founded the group Hands Up United with Tef Poe in 2014, suffer a gunshot wound to the head, his entire vehicle was literally engulfed in flames when he was discovered. That makes Seals the sixth Black man to have been killed in this way in the St. Louis area since spring of 2014, and in at least one of the previous cases a police connection has been established.

It Is What It Is 
Somehow this passed me by. I’ll have to do more research on him, but it really does seem intentional doesn’t it. So much of what I write about is all on injustice of the law and the prison system. So many lives intentionally ruined. I think if we got to talking we would find much in common. Also, have you recorded any new music lately?

I originally found you I think last year, on you tube and saw your blog was on wp. I listened to everything you put up. I, record improv, too. I’m at soundcloud -user name sonni-quick. I have 30 pieces. ( after I add my newest one wick I recorded for my mother who recently had stroke. I write a poem for her, too. It will be in a post ver soon on my second blog Watch and Whirl. You and I wrote onceback then. I also put my music on occasional posts on both of my blogs. One is centered around prison issues and the life of one man in particular so it is a special interest of mine. I also write a once a month newsletter. Anyway, I hope you are still playing! and have a wonderful day!

I’ve been caring for my mother for the last 5 weeks. Her computer abilities are low. Email mostly. She’d like to learn more but unfortunately her retention of some things is hard so doing anything else makes her frustrated. But she knows I do a lot online. She has watched me do my thing and it has helped her to understand some. “Why would anyone want to have a blog?” “How can you put personal things out there for the world to read.” “Why don’t you just send a letter or call them on the phone?” I doubt I could change her so I don’t try much. She does love to hear me play and what better audience can I have than that?

Absolutely. I have 2 blogs. mynameisjamie.net ( the life of a prison inmate and issues around our prison system) and watchandwhirl.com ( a hodge podge of other issues that don’t fit on the other blog.) There are piano pieces scattered throughout both, some with poetry. Making music is my passion. Being able to just sit and play is the culmination of my life experiences.To be able to feel an emotion and describe it – paint it – with my fingers is wonderful. You understand that. It can be a scary thing to express yourself that way, not knowing what you are going to play, trusting your fingers that they know where they want to go. Anyone can learn to read music but sometimes,if you don’t have the right teacher the creativity can get stymied – a fear of wrong notes and a need to play it perfectly. But a teacher can only teach what they know. I started teaching when I was 18. A music studio hired me through the music department of a college I was going to. I knew by the age of ten I was going to teach, but I also started playing piano bars when I was 21. My teacher was a professional, too, and it inspired me. There is a little background on me.
