Iraqi government forces and Kurdish peshmerga fighters launched their long-anticipated U.S.-backed offensive to drive the Islamic State out of the northern city of Mosul, Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said early Monday. The U.S.-led coalition is providing air support. More than one million civilians reportedly remain trapped in the city, Iraq’s second largest and ISIS’ de facto capital in Iraq.
