Obama has now shortened the sentences of 872 federal inmates: more than any other president since Woodrow Wilson, and more than the last 11 presidents all combined.
Nearly every Obama commutation involved “non-violent drug offenders.” Oscar Lopez Rivera is a non-violent believer in independence…so where is his commutation?
Oscar was not convicted of any violent crimes, but rather of “seditious conspiracy against the United States.” More than anything, he was imprisoned for an idea.
In this past year alone – 2016 – Obama has commuted 688 sentences. This too is a record for presidential clemency. According to Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates, there will be “many more commutations to come,” in the last weeks of Obama’s presidency.
As Obama breaks all records for presidential mercy, there is still one missing element…mercy for Oscar Lopez Rivera.
