New superhero La Borinqueña shows the power of Puerto Rican pride

After announcing his intentions to create an environmentally friendly Puerto Rican superhero as a part of this summer’s Puerto Rican Day Parade in New York, Edgardo Miranda-Rodriguez, with the collaborative efforts of several Puerto Rican artists, inkers, colorists and editors, introduced his flag-wearing heroine, La Borinqueqa, to comic-book fans Thursday.

Miranda-Rodriguez heavily promoted the comic after news of it debuted in The Washington Post in May, and he recently held celebratory events in New York and in Puerto Rico.

Thursday’s release date of the comic is intended to coincide with the 121st anniversary of the Puerto Rican flag.

At first glance, this comic is very much your standard superhero story, but the power of “La Borinqueqa” is in the details.

I'm originally from Puerto Rico. I was born in Santurce and raised in Rio Piedras. Have lived in Florida since 1999. I have a doctorate degree in Medicine; completed in 1976. My Internal Medicine specialty was completed in 1979. Worked for Puerto Rico's health system until 1985. At this time, I'm happily retired after working for the federal government for almost 28yrs.
