Of colonialism and climate change: The art of post-Maria Puerto Rico

#BoricuaSpirit … undefeated!! … Josie López explained, are “continued colonialism, climate change and disaster, climate justice … the economic crisis – and finally, the thing that I really want to point out is how artists are demonstrating that they are resilient, and that they’re hopeful, and that they’re resourceful.”

As 516 Arts curator Josie Lopez was planning a new exhibition on art from Puerto Rico and Puerto Ricans in diaspora, she began an email exchange with Santurce-born painter and graphic artist Antonio Martorell. “Defying darkness is a full-time job here on the island,” Martorell told Lopez. She had her title.

Puerto Rico: Defying Darkness runs through Oct. 20 at 516 Arts in downtown Albuquerque, a year after Hurricane Maria destroyed island infrastructure and killed an unknown many. (The governor of Puerto Rico recently increased the official death toll from 64 to 2,975, according to the Associated Press.) For months, Puerto Ricans literally defied darkness during a blackout deemed the second-worst on record by the research organization Rhodium Group. The recovery effort has been heavily criticized for its slowness and insufficiency. In July, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo…

A report by Zach Goins for the Daily Tar Heel.

UNC will get a taste of the Marvel universe when comic book artist and writer Edgardo Miranda-Rodriguez visits campus on Sept. 14.

As a part of the John and June Allcott Gallery, Miranda-Rodriguez’ artwork will be on display in the Hanes Art Center from Aug. 27 until Sept. 21. Miranda-Rodriguez’ visit to campus will also kick off the University’s month-long Latinx Heritage Month.

Miranda-Rodriguez has worked with Marvel for 11 years, previously focusing on superheroes of African descent, like Black Panther, Luke Cage and Storm, but after writing his first story for the anthology series “Guardians of the Galaxy: Tales of the Cosmos,” Miranda-Rodriguez recognized the larger role he could play.

“Writing that story gave me the exposure I needed to realize there was a strong need for people of…

WORLD OF DANCE 2018 ….. “🎼🎼 The Fabulous Sisters …. The Cut …. “Black and Gold” …. 🎼🎼”!!

~~September 3, 2018~~

The 2018 season is at ‘the cut’ portion.

This  group of young, talented ladies are simply out of this world.

They have gone through the qualifiers, the duels and now the cut.

I really wish them the best!

Enjoy the video.

World of Dance” judge Jennifer Lopez and special guest Savion Glover mentored the Junior Team Division contestants during the Cut, and Lopez was a little worried that The Fabulous Sisters from Fukushima, Japan, didn’t have an entirely cohesive routine prepared. But she changed her tune when she saw their complete performance.

They were decked out in regal gold costumes and ruled ferociously from a throne. Imagine if Cersei Lannister from “Game of Thrones” blew up the Sept of Baelor with just the power of urban dance.

~Jennifer Lopez~

“You guys made me tired, and I don’t get tired. Your formations and pictures from our mentoring session went up so much, and I loved that we really made you the focal point of this and it didn’t get lost in the middle of it and it made it so strong. You know, it’s very interesting choreography. It’s so different than anybody else in the competition. Beautiful.”

~Derek Hough~

I thought it was really nice that Jennifer let you borrow her throne. Again, the way you dance the choreography is so amazing. The intensity, and then right when I thought, ‘Oh, this is a great routine,’ you all took a shot of espresso and just went into hyper mode. It was like ‘Whoa!’ The way you used your costume at the end: very simple, but very, very effective. It was one of those ‘ooh’ moments. It was so good.”

When Eve walked (among them)

‘When Eve walked among the animals and named them – ‘
Ada Limón … amazing!!

Live & Learn

When Eve walked among
the animals and named them –
nightingale, red-shouldered hawk,
fiddler crab, fallow deer –
I wonder if she ever wanted
them to speak back, looked into
their wide wonderful eyes and
whispered, Name me, name me.

Ada Limón, “A Name” in The Carrying: Poems (August 14, 2018)

Ada Limón, 42, is an American poet. She was a finalist for the 2015 National Book Award in Poetry.  In an interview by Suzannah Windsor in April 21, 2014 in Compose Journal, Ada Limón: “My grandfather on my father’s side was from San Juan de los Lagos, Mexico. He crossed the border as a child in 1917 after his family’s land was confiscated by Pancho Villa’s troops during the Mexican revolution. I was not raised in a bilingual family. My grandfather rarely spoke Spanish even. He worked hard to assimilate into U.S. culture, growing…
