EMILIO AND GLORIA ESTEFAN

Another musical phenomenon that is one of my all time favorites

‘Miami Sound Machine‘ was reaching their most popular, worldwide status as I was coming up in my young, adult years.

I followed them in each and every step of their journey. I bought their singles, albums. music videos as they were dropped to the public.

Their story is one of the most important for immigrants coming to this country. Their story is one of incredible success and influence in the Latino community all over the world.

Lin-Manuel Miranda is the perfect choice to tell their story.

Enjoy!

Gloria and Emilio Estefan received a special award from the Library of Congress in a Washington, D.C. event taped for a PBS television show which aired in May

The Cuban-American hit songwriting team have composed 38 No. 1 hits across the Billboard charts and produced many others. In their 43 years together, they’ve racked up dozens of Grammys and Latin Grammys, plus hundreds of other nominations and awards including the Presidential Medal of Freedom – the highest civilian honor in the country.

The power couple added another major accomplishment to their incredible track record: During the March 13 event they became the first songwriters of Hispanic descent, and the first husband-and-wife team, to be honored with the coveted Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song.

The Gershwin Prize is named for the legendary American songwriting team George and Ira Gershwin, whose papers and original music scores were donated by the Gershwin estate to the Library of Congress.

It recognizes a living musical artist’s lifetime achievement in “promoting the genre of song as a vehicle of entertainment, information, inspiration, and cultural understanding.” Prior recipients include Paul Simon, Stevie Wonder, Paul McCartney, Carole King, Smokey Robinson, and Tony Bennett.

Singing to honor them throughout the evening were Fernando Varela, Rita Moreno, Andy Garcia, Gian Marco, Patti LaBelle, Jose Feliciano, Cyndi Lauper, Emily Estefan, and the cast from the Estefan’s own hit Broadway show On Your Feet, including Ana Villafañe and Mauricio Martinez.

Previously taped segments by Pitbull, Jon Secada, Ricky Martin, and others who could not attend due to concert engagements will be included in the show’s final edit.

In addition, Lin-Manuel Miranda narrated video segments about the Estefan’s life story.

Walking Cross Town. A Good Walk Spoiled.

How many times has this happened? … quite interesting to think about it!!
‘The weight of the casualness of the Little Lies, deployed to pull the escape hatch, as you have done so many times before. I’ll remember this moment.’ … Inspired by – “The perfume of sandalwood, rosebay, or jasmine cannot travel against the wind. But the fragrance of virtue travels against the wind, as far as the ends of the world. By The Dhammapada, The Dhammapada: The Sayings of the Buddha.

Just another day.

Walking cross-town to the office.

Paddling in an introvert’s dichotomy soup – preferring to be held in the comforts of Home, of the Known, yet, nourished by the anonymity of the city. The City. Where I can walk for days, for weeks, and never be recognized, and never recognize anyone. Where you can walk for blocks in your own head and remain peacefully undisturbed, in your anxieties, your doubts, and flashes of unexpected wonder.  A small dog on a leash, sniffing, then pulled by the owner, both navigating through the rush hour throngs of feet. I watch them. The branches of a Japanese bonsai tree in a small green patch fluttering in a wind gust, as the hulking, soulless gray skyscrapers glare from above. I look back to carry it with me. A bird, or a small flock of birds, sailing in the wind tunnel…

NEW (MEW) GUESTS

Well, I have a story to tell.

Remember when I was posting about Lovely LucyLu?

She was our ‘guest dog’ for a few months.

Early this week, she went home with MelMummy.

In their stead, we got SkinnyCat and FactCat as our new guests.

I will be reporting on their adventures as I see them.

Rumi and I tend to agree … ‘I have no desire to see people, and I feel as though I am waiting for something new and strange which will burn the unburnt side of my soul.’ … Kahlil Gibran, (1912) from “Beloved Prophet: The Love Letters of Kahlil Gibran and Mary Haskell, and Her Private Journal”

My life is quiet.

There is little beside working and walking.

I have no desire to see people, and I feel as though I am waiting for something new and strange which will burn the unburnt side of my soul.
