WHY ARE PUERTO RICANS SLEEPING OUTSIDE THEIR HOMES?
I can tell you. I was there. I traveled to Puerto Rico on December 31, 2019.
I was awakened by the strong earthquake of January 7, 2019.
I felt it and many after.
I’m one of the lucky ones whose property on the Island wasn’t damaged and also lucky because I can come back to the mainland.
However, even though I’m back in the mainland, my mind, heart and soul stayed behind; now more than ever.
🇵🇷 … I’ve thought that if I’m going to suffer because of the current American reality, I will suffer in my country, my nation, my home! No matter how ‘broken’ Puerto Rico may be, it is the place where I took my first breath!! … Puerto Rico is resilient and will rise again, particularly if the ‘master’ lets go … 🇵🇷

Puerto Rico has experienced over 2,000 earthquakes in the last month. For many Puerto Ricans, the psychological consequences of the disaster are just as significant as the structural damage.
Puerto Rico lies in a tectonically active region where earthquakes have occurred for centuries, but because the country has not experienced a quake of this level of impact since 1918, the recent quakes, their aftershocks, and resulting damage took many islanders by surprise.
About 7,500 people have left their homes for other kinds of shelter, including, in some cases, cars and tents.
