I’m so sick and tired of this frequent American attitude about those who speak a different language, mainly Spanish.
I moved to Florida in 1999. I’d live in Puerto Rico all my life before that. I was educated in an American, Catholic private school where all my lessons, with the exception of Spanish (of course) were taught in English. My textbooks were in English in school, high school and medical school. All the official documents in the Island were in English.
I considered myself fluent on English because plenty of times it proved to be beneficial.
It wasn’t until 1999 when I realized that many Americans I came in contact with resented the fact that a group of us would speak in Spanish when Hispanic people were congregated. As a ironic aside, they surely didn’t mind when the went to get their nails done and the lady workers spoke any other languages!!
They sure minded when Spanish was spoken!!
Spanish is a beautiful language.
Spanish or Castilian is a Romance language that originated in the Iberian Peninsula and today has over 483 million native speakers, mainly in Spain and the Americas. It is a global language, the world’s second-most spoken native language, after Mandarin Chinese and the world’s fourth-most spoken language, after Mandarin Chinese, English and Hindi.
For gawd’s sake, do yourself a favor: open your minds (if you have a rational one) and think of speaking other languages (whichever they may be) as a positive not a negative. Have an open mind and try to better yourself. Show intelligence not ignorance! Be a bigger person and realize that there are plenty other things other than what you actually know that you can learn:
be open to different cultures, customs, races, people.
Always keep in mind that there were other people in this nation before the ‘white Europeans’ took over.
This will surely make you a better individual in so many ways!
Off the soap box!!
