I JUST WANNA LIVE
I first heart about Keedron’s song during the days after George Floyd death at the hands of a white cop. All of a sudden his short video went viral. Since then, his talent has been spreading through the ethers.
Today, as we honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s legacy, we need to recognize that young black men and women are still treated as 3/5th’s of a person. Inequality, police abuse and brutality haven’t ceased.
Like all of us, they just wanna live!
As people around the world protested the brutal killing of George Floyd, one song delivered at the perfect time. Keedron Bryant went viral late May when he soulfully sang “I Just Wanna Live”, a song his mother wrote.
The song – which emotionally expresses how hard it is for Black people in America to live without fear or brutality – landed then 12-year-old Bryant a deal with Warner Records. LeBron James, Oprah Winfrey, Ellen DeGeneres and even former president Barack Obama reposted the original recording, helping it get views from around the world.
“My love for music is definitely rooted in church because what you hear now in my singing is from church. I grew up in church,” Bryant said.
“My mom, my dad, they’re both ministers.”
When asked ‘who is Keedron,’ Bryant made a point to focus on his faith. “I am a Christian, so I love reading the Bible. And I love God. I’m saved.”
