When The Atlantic ran Ta-Nehisi Coates’ “The Case for Reparations” in June 2015,1 the timing was impeccable. Edward Bernays himself could not have done better.2 Ta-Nehisi’s upcoming book – Between the World and Me – was already in the promotional pipeline at Penguin Random House/Spiegel Graf. It was published one year later in July 2016, and the controversy sparked by Coates’s Atlantic article provided a perfect platform for his soon-to-be published book.
The massive 15,000-word article wandered all over US and local Chicago history, but its premise was simple: 250 years of enslavement and an undeclared “war” on black families and black people, had left profound consequences on African-Americans. I got my first dose today. I’m a Pfizer kid, baby. They are literally herding people through the vaccination center at Mary Washington Hospital here in Fredericksburg. There are a lot of people volunteering to help out and I gotta say, they’re doing a great job with the program. Geez, educate yourself before you speak!! Oh, we are talking about FOX people!! … “The Constitution is not infallible. It was written by slave owners. Our first five presidents were slave owners with a total of 12 presidents owning slaves. These are men who wrote, “All men are created equal” who also held slaves and didn’t believe women should have the right to vote. We can’t live by the standards of our “barbarous” who wrote the Constitution in 1787.”
I love that people who identify themselves as Constitutionalists don’t know shit fuck about the Constitution.
Usually, when a “Constitutionalist” screams about the Constitution and the rights it guarantees, it is really only talking about one Amendment, and that’s the Second. In case you don’t know what that Amendment guarantees, ask a “Constitutionalist.” The other thing I love about “Constitutionalists,” is that they’ll tell you only part of what’s in the Second Amendment . Not only will they NOT tell you what the entire Amendment says, but when they tell you the part, “the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed,” they won’t even tell you the entire sentence.
What does the rest of that sentence say? It says, “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State…” and then it gives you, ” the right of the people to…
