===============================

If you can laugh at yourself, you are going to be fine. If you allow others to laugh with you, you will be great.

~Martin Niemoller~

To make mistakes is human; to stumble is commonplace; to be able to laugh at yourself is maturity.

~William Arthur Ward~

Love who you are and what you are and what you do. Laugh at yourself and at life and nothing can touch you.

~Louise Hay~

Someone I grew up with and knew my parents saw this filter and told me that I’m a carbon copy of my Dad!

I know … and proud of it!!

MAGA Terror Hoarder

Just stating the facts … “Republicans can gaslight all they want, but what happened on January 6 was a terrorist attack instigated by Trump with complicit actors in Congress.
Let me be clear, the MAGAts attacking the Capitol on January 6 were not tourists.”

Cjones05182021

I’ve been to Washington, D.C. a lot but I’ve only physically been inside the Capitol once. I’m the kind of tourist that once I do something touristy, I don’t want to do it again. I was in line at Graceland once and overheard some Elvis freaks talking about that visit being their fifth or some shit like that. Trust me on this, nobody needs to see the Jungle Room twice. Three TVs. Oooooh. Also, mirrors on walls don’t actually make rooms look larger, more claustrophobic. If you’ve been to Graceland more than once, seek help. Going to Memphis more than once is bad enough to throw a Graceland trip into it.

My Capitol visit was back in 1999 with my wife (at the time) and a friend of hers who was visiting for a few days. Since 1999 was a long time ago, I don’t remember everything but one of…

The endless pursuit of land , greed and corruption!! …”Israel and Hamas in Gaza are at it again with Israeli aircraft pulverizing buildings and Hamas rockets falling on Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. Well Israel and Hamas in Gaza are at it again with Israeli aircraft pulverizing buildings and Hamas rockets falling on Jerusalem and Tel Aviv.  Street fighting has broken out in Israel between Israeli Jews and Arabs as Israeli forces prepare for a ground invasion of Gaza.

So what sparked this latest round of fighting.

Seven apartments.

The city had been on edge for several weeks, with Palestinians first angered over the closure of a popular plaza just as Ramadan was beginning.  last week a years-long legal battle to remove seven Palestinian families from their homes in East Jerusalem appeared set to end with eviction.

The families have been living in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood, just north of the Old City, since 1956 — in an arrangement brokered by the United Nations to find homes in Jordanian-controlled East Jerusalem for families who lost their property in what became the state of…

Then They Came For Me

This is one of my favorite poems … I learned about it and the meaning remained engrained in my mind!! … “You’ve all heard and read this poem, written by German Lutheran pastor Martin Niemöller, more than a few times. Niemöller penned this in 1946, at the end of WWII, the end of the Holocaust that took more than 6 million lives.” … applies to so many things in life. Yet … it came ‘alive’ in my conscious brain in 2016.

Filosofa's Word

First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a socialist.

Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

You’ve all heard and read this poem, written by German Lutheran pastor Martin Niemöller, more than a few times.  Niemöller penned this in 1946, at the end of WWII, the end of the Holocaust that took more than 6 million lives.  It is engraved on a plaque at the New England Holocaust Memorial in Boston, Massachusetts, and is known worldwide.  The poem speaks volumes and should serve as a warning to people all around…

How Cooking Tostones with My Daughter Helps Me Share Our Puerto Rican Heritage

TOSTONES, anything crunchy … my favorite!! … “Whenever I think of Puerto Rican food, I think of the crunch. The crunch you hear when biting into a crispy empanadilla, bacalaito or tostón.”

Repeating Islands

[Many thanks to Peter Jordens for bringing this item to our attention.] Jessiva van Dop DeJesus (Eating Well) waxes poetic on preparing hot, crispy tostones as a way to share her Puerto Rican heritage. [Also see her tostones & dipping sauce recipe at eatingwell.com/recipe.]

Whenever I think of Puerto Rican food, I think of the crunch. The crunch you hear when biting into a crispy empanadilla, bacalaito or tostón. Plantains were always part of my house growing up, and one of our favorite treats was tostones. Whether they were served as a snack or as a side with arroz con habichuelas (rice and beans), they were an ever-present staple at our home. Biting into these thin, crunchy treats always brings me back to my childhood in my hometown of Guayama, Puerto Rico.

Plantains are more than an ingredient—they are part of our history. Plantains come from our…

Wait And See

152 real Republicans signed this letter! Dare we hope? … “A letter in The Washington Post yesterday caught my eye. The letter was written by a number of Republicans, including former members of Congress, cabinet members, and governors, and promises … I’m not sure if they are promising an entirely new party, or simply a more centrist, sensible arm of the Republican Party.”

Filosofa's Word

An announcement letter in The Washington Post yesterday caught my eye. The letter was written by a number of Republicans, including former members of Congress, cabinet members, and governors, and promises … I’m not sure if they are promising an entirely new party, or simply a more centrist, sensible arm of the Republican Party.

I am, by nature, a skeptic … question everything. Trust nobody. However, I am pleased to see that in the wake of the abhorrent treatment the party has heaped on not only Liz Cheney, but all who had the integrity to stand against the former guy and his Big Lie, I’m pleased to see that at least some notables in the GOP are not simply lying down and waiting for the bulldozer to flatten them. I am, for now, taking a ‘wait and see’ attitude toward the whole thing, but will have more to say as…

Puerto Rican jockey celebrates 4th Kentucky Derby win

Jockeys are usually short, light men!! This is one ‘TALL BORICUA”!! … “Puerto Rican jockey John Velázquez won his fourth title at Churchill Downs, leading the three-year-old colt Medina Spirit to the 147th edition of the Kentucky Derby on Saturday, the first Triple Crown race of the equestrian season in the United States.”

Repeating Islands

EFE writes that Puerto Rican jockey John Velázquez won his fourth title at Churchill Downs, leading the three-year-old colt Medina Spirit to the 147th edition of the Kentucky Derby on Saturday, the first Triple Crown race of the equestrian season in the United States. Here are excerpts from an article by Mark Story.

For anyone who is discouraged in the pursuit of a dream, theKentucky Derby career of jockey John Velazqueznow stands as an ultimate testament to never giving up.

Even as Velazquez established himself as one of the premier riders in North American Thoroughbred racing in the first decade of the 21st century, his luck in our nation’s signature horse race was all buzzard’s.

Over the first 11 shots Velazquez got to win the Derby, he failed every time. His personal Kentucky Derby race chart was filled with finishes such as 19th (three times), 15th and…

Walking. With Truckers, Parakeets & Puppies.

Like damn alright … “But damn, what a view … ” Photo: DK @ Daybreak. 5:24 to 5:39 am, May 15, 2021. 46° F. Cove Island Park, Stamford, CT.

Live & Learn

375 consecutive days. Like in a Row. Cove Island Morning Walk.  The commitment to stop this obsession on the 366th day, came and went. Rachel Cusk: ‘…this balking of my will.’ This pull of something Larger.

10:00 a.m. yesterday. Cablevision contractor (full mask the entire time because it’s the right thing to do) takes his wire cutters, and with a quick turn of his wrist, strips the white pvc wrapper from the copper wire. I couldn’t do that without slashing my index finger. Wish I could do Something with these hands. Need to watch Dick Proenneke’s Youtube documentary on building a log cabin in the Alaskan Wilderness. That’s right. Get off-grid and build something.

4:35 a.m.  Newspaper ‘Man’ (not Boy, not on a 2-wheeler but an early model Nissan) flicks his wrist and the NY Times  sails in slow motion, its blue wrapper flapping in the air…
