By Hook Or By Book

You can’t wait until life isn’t hard anymore, before you decide to be happy.

~ Jane Marczewski ~

Talent shows like America’s Got Talent are known for having talented contestants with heartbreaking backstories, but Simon’s Golden Buzzer recipient, Jane Marczewski, aka Nightbirde, is one for the books. Battling cancer since 2019, the deceptively fragile looking thirty-year-old showed more strength and perseverance than a great many people, despite at the time of her audition, having been given a 2% chance of survival. Thankfully she’s recently received more positive news, so fingers crossed that she goes back into remission. She also has a beautiful, ethereal voice and a true gift for songwriting. Below I’ve posted her audition video, the lyric video, and a live performance of her original song It’s Okay.

With the photo above [credits not provided], New York Latin Culture reminds us to “Celebrate New York Puerto Rico Week” culminating in the National Puerto Rican Day Parade 2021, which takes place tomorrow, Sunday, June 13, 12:00pm-2:00pm (EST). The National Puerto Rican Day Parade Celebration will broadcast on WABC-TV, Channel 7, and will also be streamed on the station’s website

I was moved by New York Latin Culturesdedication of its “New York Puerto Rico Week” celebration to late Puerto Rican photographer Adál Maldonado:

“We dedicate this New York Puerto Rico Week to our padrino Borinquen, the legendary Nuyorican photographerAdál Maldonado(New York Times, 1948-2020). We haven’t been able to stop laughing since we met in Santurce. Adál, we don’t know where you went. You must have beenkidnapped by aliens again. We hope you have plenty of plantains and await your return. You…

No Prize For You

Didn’t know about this. Now I do! … it really isn’t a good look, Pulitzer!! … “The Pulitzer Prize just took a dump on my entire profession. I’m including this cartoon in my 2021 entry because I am forcing the Pulitzer Prize people to see it.”

Yesterday, the Pulitzer Prizes announced the winners for what they perceived to be the best journalism from print and digital news outlets in 2020. This is a day journalists sit on the edge of their seats for in great anticipation. This year, the announcement was delayed until June when it’s usually done in April. So, the anxiety for journalists is intensified and prolonged. The journalists waiting for this include political cartoonists.

After much waiting and anticipation, the Pulitzer Prize Committee slapped the entire profession of political cartooning in the face. Even for those cartoonists who didn’t enter, slappity slap slap. No prize for you. Can we have our entry fees returned? I mean, we entered because you gave us the impression there would be a winner. Even the Soup Nazi gave George Costanza a refund.

Yesterday, the Pulitzer people refused to give their annual award to a political cartoonist. Why?…

Five Years Later …. “ 🏳️‍🌈 ‘It Still Hurts! Gone Too Soon’ – #OrlandoUnited 🏳️‍🌈 …. “!!

~~June 12, 2021~~

Five years ago today, I remember waking up to the horrific reality, perpetrated on my local LGBTQ+ community in Orlando.

Gone but not frogotten!!

The majority of the victims were Latin/Hispanic … that was another blow to one of my demographics. It’s something that can’t never, ever be fogotten!!

… who will live in our hearts and memories for all eternity!!

Five years ago, 49 families learned their mothers, fathers, siblings and friends would not be coming home after a gunman opened fire on the Pulse nightclub in Orlando.

Each one of the 49 people killed, now known as the 49 angels, on June 12, 2016, left behind a legacy.

Before they were victims, the 49 were mothers, fathers, recent graduates, veterans, breast cancer survivors, dreamers, artists and so much more.

~~Published April 28, 2017~~

On June 12, 2016, a gunman killed 49 people and injured 53 others inside Pulse, an LGBTQ nightclub in Orlando, Florida, on Latin Night. It was both the deadliest mass shooting by a single gunman and the deadliest incident of violence against LGBTQ people in U.S. history. The victims live on in our memories.

Those memories will not fade.
