Today marks the 16th annual Transgender Day of Rememberance, after the first event was organized by Gwendolyn Ann Smith in Allston, Mass., to memorialize Rita Hester — a trans woman of color killed in 1998.

Every year since, growing numbers of trans people and advocates worldwide take a moment to pause and remember the countless lives lost around the globe to transphobic violence.

The somber occasion serves as a memorial event in which trans people and allies can mourn their dead, celebrate the lives they lived and as a popular hashtag in the wake of unabated anti-trans violence proclaims, #SayHerName.

As the names listed in the graphics demonstrate, certain nations — the United States and Brazil — have particularly acute problems with fatal transphobic violence. The number of trans women killed this year in the U.S., for instance, is nearly double that of the total killed last year.

But it’s also worth noting that in many countries around the world, no formal system exists to report the deaths of trans people, and repressive societies combined with oppressive policing worldwide often give trans people good cause to be wary of law-enforcement officials. 

So while we mourn those whose names are listed below, take a moment to memorialize those whose names we will never know — because they, too, had lives, and loves, and passions that were extinguished because of hate.

Sea World of Hurt …. “Where Happiness Tanks”!!

SeaWorld enslaves animals in small tanks at marine parks around the country, where they are forced to perform unnecessary tricks for “entertainment.” It’s a business built on the suffering of intelligent, social animals who are denied everything that is natural and important to them. As a result, animals imprisoned by SeaWorld often die prematurely from stress and other captivity-related causes.

SeaWorld, which owns all but one of the orcas held captive in the U.S., has a long history of mistreating animals. In the wild, orcas are intelligent predators who work cooperatively in search of food. They share intricate relationships in a matrilineal society.

In some populations, orcas rarely leave their mother’s pod, but at SeaWorld, they are often separated. These attributes, along with wild orca pods’ unique dialects, are considered a form of culture that is unrivaled by any species other than humans. Something to think about …. “Can anyone explain this one to me?”

Dylann Roof, 21, has been identified as the suspect in the mass shooting at the Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina on Wednesday, June 17. The FBI says Roof is from Lexington County, South Carolina.

The suspect reportedly told a survivor, “I have to do it. You’re raping our women and taking over the country. You have to go.”

The Charleston Police Department describes Roof as a white male with a slender build. Roof was captured Thursday morning, June 18, in Shelby, North Carolina.

Has confessed to carrying out the shooting massacre that left nine people dead at a historic black church in Charleston, South Carolina.

Translating a very important question … “Who depends on whom?”

WHO DEPENDS ON WHOM?

The graphic above describes very simply the economical relationship that exists between Puerto Rico and the United States of America.

Many feel that if Puerto Ricans aren’t happy with their current political, economical situation as well as the relationship with the mainland, why don’t they just leave the “Union“, “if you don’t like it, get out” kind of situation.

It’s much more complicated than that.

To even consider this would be more than terribly simplistic.

The red arrow depicts the monies that Puerto Rico receives from the US. This “aid” includes Pel grants, economic assistance, Medicare, Women Infants and Children (WIC), Social Security (SS), food stamps, etc.

This totals $4 billions + …. would you say it’s a lot of money?

The green arrow depicts the amount of movnes that come from Puerto Rico into the arks of the federal government. This money comes from federal taxes, Merchant Marine quotas, foreign business, ect.

This totals $74 billions + …. how much more does the US receive from than “gives” to the island of  Puerto Rico?

CABOTAGE LAW .. in Puerto Rico, since 1920!!
“As an ISLAND, Puerto Rico needs to develop its own shipping industry, and conduct its own international trade.

But it is not allowed to do this … thanks to the Law of Cabotage.

Under Section 27 of the U.S. Merchant Marine Act of 1920 (also known as the Jones-Shafroth Act), all goods shipped over water between US ports must be carried on US flag ships that are constructed in the US, owned by US citizens and operated by US citizens.
What does this mean?

It means that every product that enters or leaves Puerto Rico, other than highly taxed and severely regulated foreign registry vessels, must be carried on a US ship to and from US ports.
EVERY product that enters or leaves Puerto Rico to U.S. ports must be carried on a U.S. ship — or face highly protectionist tariffs, quotas, taxes and fees that are later passed on to the Puerto Rican consumer. This includes oil from Venezuela, cars from Japan, electronics from China, food from Central America, medicine from Canada — any materials from anywhere.

In order to comply with the Jones Act, all this merchandise must be off-loaded from the original carrier, reloaded onto a U.S. ship and then delivered to Puerto Rico. It all makes as much sense, as digging a hole and filling it up again.”

Down on the farm …. “What we don’t see”!!

FACTORY FARMS

On today’s factory farms, animals are crammed by the thousands into filthy, windowless sheds and confined to wire cages, gestation crates, barren dirt lots, and other cruel confinement systems.

These animals will never raise their families, root around in the soil, build nests, or do anything that is natural and important to them. Most won’t even feel the sun on their backs or breathe fresh air until the day they are loaded onto trucks bound for slaughter. The green pastures and idyllic barnyard scenes of years past are now distant memories.

The factory farming industry strives to maximize output while minimizing costs — always at the animals’ expense. The giant corporations that run most factory farms have found that they can make more money by cramming animals into tiny spaces, even though many of the animals get sick and some die.

Wait until you see what today’s farms ACTUALLY look like.

Modern farms are factories intent on maximizing their output without any regard for the welfare of the cows, chickens, pigs, and other animals used for food.

Animals are crammed by the thousands into filthy, windowless sheds and stuffed into wire cages, metal crates, and other torturous devices.

Most of them won’t even breathe fresh air until the day they’re loaded onto trucks headed for slaughterhouses.

When they’ve grown large enough to slaughter or their bodies are worn out from producing milk or eggs, animals raised for food are crowded onto trucks and transported for miles through all weather extremes, typically without food or water.

At the slaughterhouse, those who survived the transport will have their throats slit, often while they’re still conscious.

Many remain conscious when they’re plunged into the scalding-hot water of the defeathering or hair-removal tanks or while their bodies are being skinned or hacked apart.

Born and raised by underpaid public school teachers in Sanford, Fla., Andy Marlette graduated from the University of Florida and became staff editorial cartoonist at the Pensacola News Journal in 2007.

Marlette received a priceless editorial cartoon education while living with his uncle and Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist Doug Marlette in Hillsborough, N.C. Doug’s tragic death in July of 2007 made evermore poignant the elder Marlette’s fierce and faithful devotion to the art form of editorial cartooning as a cornerstone of American free speech. With this in mind, Andy works daily to learn and uphold the disciplines and values passed on to him by his late uncle.

Andy’s editorial cartoons have become both hated and adored by daily readers. His work has been awarded by the Florida Society of Newspaper Editors for best editorial cartoons on state issues and former Governor Charlie Crist referred to himself regularly as Marlette’s biggest fan, despite the fact that he was also regularly a target in cartoons.

The story of the encounter between European settlers and America’s native population does not make for pleasant reading. Among early accounts, perhaps the most famous is Helen Hunt Jackson’s “A Century of Dishonor” (1888), a doleful recitation of forced removals, killings, and callous disregard. Jackson’s book, which clearly captured some essential elements of what happened, also set a pattern of exaggeration and one-sided indictment that has persisted to this day.

Thus, according to Ward Churchill, a professor of ethnic studies at the University of Colorado, the reduction of the North American Indian population from an estimated 12 million in 1500 to barely 237,000 in 1900 represents a”vast genocide . . .  the most sustained on record.”

By the end of the 19th century, writes David E. Stannard, a historian at the University of Hawaii, native Americans had undergone the “worst human holocaust the world had ever witnessed, roaring across two continents non-stop for four centuries and consuming the lives of countless tens of millions of people.”

In the judgment of Lenore A. Stiffarm and Phil Lane, Jr., “there can be no more monumental example of sustained genocide – certainly none involving a ‘race‘ of people as broad and complex as this – anywhere in the annals of human history.”

February 12 is considered “Red Hand Day.”

The treaty banning the use of child soldiers (the Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child on the involvement of children in armed conflict) entered into force on February 12, 2002.

Since then, many groups have organized local events on February 12 using the red hand to raise awareness about the child soldier issue.

Today, child soldiers are fighting in at least 14 countries around the world. Boys and girls alike are forced into combat, exploited for their labor, and subjected to unspeakable violence.  A UN treaty prohibits the participation of children under the age of 18 in hostilities. But too often, it is not enforced, and many countries have not yet ratified it.

In 2009, hundreds of youth and student groups from around the world called for stronger action to end the use of child soldiers. They gathered over 250,000 “red hands” – the symbol of the global campaign against the use of child soldiers-and presented them to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in New York on February 12, 2009.  In response, the Secretary-General pledged that the entire UN system would work to “stamp out” such abuse.

This year, the Red Hand Campaign is pressing for universal ratification of the treaty banning the use of child soldiers.  The treaty, known as the Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child on the involvement of children in armed conflict, prohibits the use of children under age 18 in hostilities or their forced recruitment. Since it was adopted ten years ago, 131 governments-two-thirds of the world’s countries- have ratified it.

However, 61 countries have still not ratified the optional protocol. The Red Hand Day Campaign will urge these countries to ratify the optional protocol and make clear their absolute commitment to ending the use of child soldiers.  Our goal is for every country in the world to ratify the optional protocol by 2012, the tenth anniversary of when the optional protocol took effect. ….

Hundreds and thousands of handprints have been collected in more than 50 countries and handed over to politicians and to responsible parties, including UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon. There is progress, but there are still 250,000 child soldiers in the world.

Keystone Pipeline …. Time to veto, Mr. President!

Today, the EPA came out and said that the tar sands oil transported by the Keystone XL pipeline would pose a number of risks, including potential oil spills and significant increases in greenhouse gas emissions.
