In his latest video, “Man vs. Earth” spoken word artist Prince Ea opens by saying,

In “Man vs. Earth,” spoken word artist Prince Ea opens by saying, “Fun fact: Planet Earth is 4.5 billion years old, mankind, about 140,000 years old. Let me put that in perspective. If you condense the Earth’s lifespan into 24 hours—that’s one full day—then we have been here for, drum roll please, three seconds.” Only by coming together, he says, can we make it to the proverbial fourth second.

Prince Ea objects to us calling ourselves homo sapiens, or “wise man” because, though we may be intelligent, we lack wisdom. “While intelligence speaks, wisdom listens,” he says. “And we willingly covered our ears to Mother Nature’s screams and closed our eyes to all of her help wanted signs.

Last Earth Day, activist and spoken word artist Prince Ea brought us the powerful and thought-provoking video Dear Future Generations: Sorry. With over 96 million views on Facebook to date, Prince Ea achieved something pretty incredible for the environmental community.

He clearly communicated the urgency of protecting our planet and inspired millions to understand the importance of mitigating climate change and taking action to stop deforestation. 

He was able to reach the hearts of the generation to whom this issue matters to most: young people. And reminded us all that the power of change is in OUR hands!

I had the honor of sitting down with Prince Ea in London last week to discuss his newest video in support of the Stand For Trees campaign.

“What was your inspiration for doing a second Stand For Trees video?”

Prince Ea

“I felt like there was more to say. The story was unfinished, I had more to get out there and in a different way. When I was brainstorming the original concept of writing a letter to future generations I came up with other dynamic ideas which I thought could be just as compelling. One of which was the 3 seconds theme, which I use in this one. This particular video is coming from an anthropological perspective (what I studied in school), looking at us as a species and the ramifications of our existence.”

“What is the message you’re sending to the world?”

“The message is: An inner revolution needs to take place. Global warming, climate change, animal agriculture, pollution, pesticides … all of these things are symptoms. They are byproducts of our inner reflection and how we see the world, how we see each other and how we see the environment. We’re very separated and divided, but that is not the truth about reality.

That is the truth about our socially constructed reality. The main message is to find the truth and see that we are connected to all beings both great and small. I always end with a message of hope, I believe that we can and will turn it all around. However, I don’t think the goal is to save the world, but to reshape it.

“Why do you think young people are such a critical audience for this message?”

“I think because it’s really our future that’s at stake. We are the first generation to really see the impact of climate change and the last one who will be able to do something about it. So it’s definitely crucial that young people will become more aware. We have an opportunity to really evolve the human species into a new direction. A totally new direction from our past. One with mindfulness and love and care and understanding. No longer a business as usual approach.”

Puerto Rico is a multi-ethnic nation, home to people of different ethnic and national backgrounds. As a result, some Puerto Ricans do not treat their nationality as an ethnicity but as a citizenship with various ethnicities and national origins comprising the “Puerto Rican people“.

Baltimore uprising not all about race

Since the killing of an unarmed black teenager by a white police officer in Ferguson, Mo., eight months ago and subsequent riots, the discussion has been all about race, and rightly so.

Ferguson is two-thirds black, but the power structure — from city manager to judge to prosecuting attorney and clerks — was white. Just four of its 54 police officers were black. The Justice Department found overwhelming evidence of bigotry in policing.

But Baltimore, where riots erupted this week after the death of another young black man in police custody, doesn’t fit that cookie cutter. Its mayor is a black woman, as was her predecessor, and several black police commissioners have run the department, where half the officers are African American.

Yet Baltimore is the latest city to erupt in race-linked violence.

I’ve seen in graphic before but I didn’t know the meaning or the artist before. It’s amazing to me that this topic is still around. It never went away … it was lurking in the underworld with different manifestation. Now it’s out in the open again …. no hiding. This reality is shameful.

This was a piece originally done because I was sick of the african American death that has been occurring to much with Travyon Martin, Mike Brown, Eric Garner and many more, due to .. .the goverment not caring!

As African Americans what is our life worth?
As a people we SHOULD NOT be afraid of our government.

Like most Black people in the United States, Patrick was paying attention to the news and was seeing people who look like him being killed senselessly. Then in September, Eric Garner died after saying “I can’t breathe” 11 times as a cop choked him.

The searing anger that came with yet another Black life ending spurred him to create New Age of Slavery. “It seems that African-Americans have been targeted in our own state and in our own country. I cannot stress that enough. IT IS OUR OWN COUNTRY.”

So he took a 16×22 white canvas and he didn’t even do a rough sketch in his sketchbook like he typically does. He just started drawing on the canvas itself. He taped off the canvas to create the 13 stripes of the flag and he drew 50 perfect stars too. And then, he started drawing and painting hanging people in every other stripe and he stopped after he did because “what I drew hurt me.” He walked away from the piece for 3 days and when he came back he painted them red, and realized that the stars couldn’t be the old-fashioned ones.

Patrick created cracks through most of the stars, and he turned the others into silhouettes of men. That was what I noticed the 2nd time I took a look at the painting. I saw the men holding guns, and I saw the boys and men who were on their knees, begging not to be shot or with their backs turned. Every time I took a look at New Age of Slavery, I saw something new and it was a fresh gut punch. And the first time I noticed the baby in the 6th red stripe, my heart ached.

I got to hear about his whole process in creating this piece and he diverts from his usual technique of creating art that looks clean here. Because his furiousness would not let him make this clean. The hanging bodies drip into the white stripes, and that is part of what makes Patrick’s work so poignant. The flag’s white stripes can’t be so white because they’re soiled by the blood of black lives taken.

When Patrick finished this piece, he stepped back from it. “I stood back and said ‘What have I done?’ and I cried. I was blown away and was in awe. This is the a piece of mine that I will say is powerful and I rarely say that with any of my pieces. It made me cry.”
