This day, 35 years ago, marks the passing of English singer
and songwriter and former member of The Beatles, John Lennon.
(Born John Winston Lennon; Oct. 9, 1940 – 8 Dec.19, 80)

John Lennon was an English musician who gained worldwide fame as one of the members of the Beatles, for his subsequent solo career, and for his political activism and pacifism.

He was shot by “a deranged American gunman” (I refuse to use his name) in the archway of the building where he lived, The Dakota, in New York City on 8 December 1980.

Lennon had just returned from Record Plant Studio with his wife, Yoko Ono.

After sustaining four fatal gunshot wounds, Lennon was pronounced dead on arrival at Roosevelt Hospital. He was 40 years old.

At the hospital, it was stated that nobody could have lived for more than a few minutes after sustaining such injuries. Shortly after local news stations reported Lennon’s death, crowds gathered at Roosevelt Hospital and in front of the Dakota.

Lennon was cremated on 10 December 1980 at the Ferncliff Cemetery in Hartsdale, New York. The ashes were given to Ono, who chose not to hold a funeral for him.

Pink reveals her new role as a UNICEF ambassador on Good Morning America

Pink has been appointed a UNICEF ambassador.

And the proud pop star appeared on Good Morning America on Monday to share her big news.

The 36-year-old singer – who shares three-year-old daughter, Willow with husband Carey Hart – will focus on children’s health initiatives, including fighting global malnutrition, which impacts 159 million children.

“From this distant vantage point, the Earth might not seem of any particular interest.

The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every “superstar,” every “supreme leader,” every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there – on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam.

The Earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena. Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors, so that, in glory and triumph, they could become the momentary masters of a fraction of a dot. Think of the endless cruelties visited by the inhabitants of one corner of this pixel on the scarcely distinguishable inhabitants of some other corner, how frequent their misunderstandings, how eager they are to kill one another, how fervent their hatreds. Our posturings, our imagined self-importance, the delusion that we have some privileged position in the Universe, are challenged by this point of pale light.

Our planet is a lonely speck in the great enveloping cosmic dark. In our obscurity, in all this vastness, there is no hint that help will come from elsewhere to save us from ourselves. The Earth is the only world known so far to harbor life. There is nowhere else, at least in the near future, to which our species could migrate. Visit yes. Settle, not yet. Like it or not, for the moment the Earth is where we make our stand. It has been said that astronomy is a humbling and character building experience.

Husband pays touching tribute to ‘love of his life’ in defiant message to attackers

The husband of a woman killed in the Paris attacks has written a touching message to the “love of my life” and promised to raise their 17-month-old son “happy and free ”.

Antoine Leiris, whose wife Helene Muyal-Leiris was among the 89 killed in the Bataclan concert hall attack on Friday evening, posted an emotional message on Facebook.

Mr Leiris, who first met his 35-year-old wife 12 years ago, told the attackers he would “not grant you the gift of my hatred.”

In a post – shared more than 60,000 times by Tuesday morning – Mr. Leiris said in French he would raise their son Melvil “happy and free” and that responding to “hatred with anger is falling victim to the same ignorance that has made you what you are.”

Celebrating Thirty Years

“Do They Know It’s Christmas?” is a song written by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure in 1984 to raise money for relief of the 1983–85 famine in Ethiopia. The original version was produced by Midge Ure and released byBand Aid on 28 November 1984.

In October 1984, a BBC television report by Michael Buerk was aired in the UK, which highlighted the famine that had hit the people of Ethiopia. Irish singer Bob Geldof saw the report and was inspired to raise money to relieve those affected by the famine. He called Midge Ure from Ultravox and together they quickly co-wrote the song, “Do They Know It’s Christmas?”.

To mark the 30th anniversary of the Do They Know It’s Christmas recording, Bob has once again gathered the biggest names in music for a huge collaboration

The likes of Rita Ora, Ed Sheeran, Bono, Chris Martin, Jessie Ware, Paloma Faith, Emeli Sande, Bastille and Elbow all took part and sang lyrics which had been changed slightly to reflect the Ebola crisis in West Africa.

Sir Bob gave an emotional speech to the Band Aid 30 line-up and told them: “Today you join Ray Charles, Miles Davis, Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Pink Floyd and all those other people who at one time have done something for Band Aid.”

Since then the world has changed dramatically and nowhere more so than in Africa. Across the continent, there has been hugely inspiring and positive change. Poverty is on the decline. Seven of the ten of the fastest growing economies are in Africa.

Child mortality rates have decreased significantly, AIDS contagion levels are beginning to recede, and more children – especially girls – are in school than ever before.

Yet Ebola has struck parts of West Africa. The World Health Organization has said that the outbreak is “unparalleled in modern times”. The UN has recently called for a fivefold increase in government contributions to the fight against Ebola, and more skilled healthworkers are still needed. This is why Band Aid 30 exists

‘I Can See, Mommy’: Witness The Moment Two Blind Sisters See The World For First Time

Sonia and Anita, two sisters living in rural India, were both born blind. A simple surgery, costing about $300, could have restored their sight long ago; but their parents, who earn 17 cents an hour planting and harvesting rice by hand, could barely make ends meet.

Though the odds seemed stacked against them, the girls got a happy ending anyway.

Thanks to the efforts of 20/20/20, a nonprofit working to restore vision to blind children and adults in some of the world’s poorest countries, Sonia and Anita were able to undergo that simple surgery on their eyes. When the bandages came off, they saw the world around them for the very first time, and it was captured in a video detailing the sisters’ story.

Sonia, 12, is said to have gasped as she opened her eyes and blinked into the sunlight for the first time. Her 6-year-old sister, holding her mother close, reportedly declared, “I can see, Mommy.”

According to 20/20/20, the 15-minute “miracle” surgery, which the sisters both underwent, involves a surgeon removing the defective lens that causes blindness and replacing it with an artificial lens. The procedure could restore the eyesight of half the blind children and adults in the world, the nonprofit says.

“The only problem is, for the poorest people in the world, who live on $1 a day, they could never afford to pay for a $300 surgery. So they will remain blind for the rest of their lives –- unless someone helps them,” 20/20/20 writes on its website.

“It is an amazing experience to watch a child or adult who was blind open their eyes and see. Some gasp, some cry, some scream with joy. Some are too stunned to do anything except look around them and take it all in,” the company also says on its website.

Sonia and Anita are reportedly both doing well since their life-changing procedures. 20/20/20 says that the older sister is now going to school and has made friends.

The holidays are around the corner. Thanksgiving will be celebrated this week. After that Christmas and the New Year. 

We all know that the homeless situation in this country is out of control. Several cities are passing laws that are making the homeless’ existence even more dire. 

We are all human. We all bleed red. We all have basic needs. We are in a constant state of war … this one is within our country and our communities.

In the spirit of this season, let’s try to alleviate the existence of those who are less fortunate and have “fallen” into this state of homelessness that they do not deserve

Let us not forget that!

“Gimme Shelter” is a song by the English rock band The Rolling Stones. It first appeared as the opening track on the band’s 1969 album Let It Bleed. Although the first word was spelled “Gimmie” on that album, subsequent recordings by the band and other musicians have made “Gimme” the customary spelling. Greil Marcus, writing in Rolling Stone at the time of its release, said of it, “The Stones have never done anything better.”

On Let It Bleed’s bleak world view, Jagger said in a 1995 interview with Rolling Stone

“Well, it’s a very rough, very violent era. The Vietnam War. Violence on the screens, pillage and burning. And Vietnam was not war as we knew it in the conventional sense.
