At least 81 transgender people were murdered worldwide this year — and those are just the victims whose deaths were reported.

Today marks the 16th annual Transgender Day of Rememberance, after the first event was organized by Gwendolyn Ann Smith in Allston, Mass., to memorialize Rita Hester — a trans woman of color killed in 1998.

Every year since, growing numbers of trans people and advocates worldwide take a moment to pause and remember the countless lives lost around the globe to transphobic violence.

The somber occasion serves as a memorial event in which trans people and allies can mourn their dead, celebrate the lives they lived and as a popular hashtag in the wake of unabated anti-trans violence proclaims, #SayHerName.

As the names listed in the graphics demonstrate, certain nations — the United States and Brazil — have particularly acute problems with fatal transphobic violence. The number of trans women killed this year in the U.S., for instance, is nearly double that of the total killed last year.

But it’s also worth noting that in many countries around the world, no formal system exists to report the deaths of trans people, and repressive societies combined with oppressive policing worldwide often give trans people good cause to be wary of law-enforcement officials. 

So while we mourn those whose names are listed below, take a moment to memorialize those whose names we will never know — because they, too, had lives, and loves, and passions that were extinguished because of hate.

Robin Williams’s death: a reminder that suicide and depression are not selfish

News broke that Robin Williams had passed away, due to apparent suicide following severe depression. As the vast majority of people will likely have already said, this was terribly heart-breaking news. Such an iconic, talented and beloved figure will have no shortage of tributes paid to him and his incredible legacy.

It’s also worth noting that Robin Williams was open about his mental health issues.

I don’t profess to be any legal scholar. I don’t know all the details of this case. I will leave that to the professionals and those in the legal system who should be working on this. However, I have been following this case closely through the posts presented in the blogospshere.

I feel for the family, for the town, for the state and for the nation.

THERE HAS BEEN NO CHANGE SINCE THE CIVIL RIGHTS DEMONSTRATIONS

The problem seems to be “walking while black”. 

Call for calm … but don’t expect it. This is a wound that hasn’t been healed in a long time and keeps getting “salt” spread unto it.

A record 2.5 million children in the U.S. were homeless at some point in 2013, according to a new report from the National Center for Family and Homelessness.

This amounts to one in 30 children and an 8 percent increase in child homelessness between 2012 and 2013. Nearly half the children are under the age of six. While the problem is most prevalent in Alabama, Mississippi, and California, it exists in every city, county, and state in the country.

The nation’s high poverty rate, a lack of affordable housing, and traumatic experiences – especially domestic violence — are the main causes of rising child homelessness. Most of the children come from single parent households, and 20-50 percent of the mothers of homeless children have experienced intimate partner violence, according to the report.

The effect of even temporary homelessness may lead to serious mental health issues and affect a child for the rest of his or her life. Trauma stemming from residential instability has been shown to interfere with learning and lead to poor cognitive skills and emotional self-regulation.

I’ve been feeling nostalgic, somewhat sad and emotionally spent. I’ve been wondering why. My mind has been working trying to figure this out. I found a source, browsing through the net that may explain why.

The following resonates with my soul. I feel a change a’coming. 

The autumn equinox marks the arrival of the season of fall, traditionally seen as a period of changes leading to the dark of winter. Autumn is actually the beginning of the cycle. An author write “the dynamics of the fall of the year have the sweep of a great symphony or an epic poem.”

Here are three topics to think about 

~BALANCING DARKNESS WITH LIGHT~

On the autumn equinox, day and night are of equal length. This signals the need to balance light and darkness within us.

~LETTING GO~

As we watch leaves fluttering to the ground in the fall, we are reminded that nature’s cycles are mirrored in our lives. Autumn is a time for letting go and releasing things that have been a burden.

~ACKNOWLEDGING IMPERMANENCE~

Autumn reminds us of the impermanence of everything. We have experienced the budding of life in spring and the flowerings and profusions of summer. Now the leaves fall and bare branches remind us of the fleeting nature of all things.

Something to think about …. Homelessness in young LGBT!!

As many as 40 percent of homeless youth identify as LGBT, and a new Williams Institute study of youth shelters confirms this estimate. Between October 2011 and March 2012, 354 agencies completed surveys about their clients and found that about 40 percent of their homeless and non-homeless clients were LGBT (9 percent of whom identified as bisexual). About 30 percent of clients using housing-related services (like emergency shelter and transitional living programs) were LGBT.

What was particularly disconcerting about this study was how evident family rejection contributed to this disproportionate number of homeless LGBT youth.

Of all the agencies’ LGBT homeless clients, 68 percent have experienced family rejection and more than half (54 percent) experienced abuse in their family. Fortunately, nearly 80 percent of the service providers who work with clients under the age of 18 are doing family acceptance-related work, though only about half of providers working with older youth offer such resources.
