OPEN LETTER TO WORLD LEADERS

2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference

The 2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference, COP 21 or CMP 11 is being held in Le Bourget, Paris, from November 30 to December 11.

It is the 21st yearly session of the Conference of the Parties to the 1992 United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the 11th session of the Meeting of the Parties to the 1997 Kyoto Protocol. The conference objective is to achieve a legally binding and universal agreement on climate, from all the nations of the world.

Open Letter from Academics to World Leaders ahead of the Paris Climate Conference 2015

Some issues are of such ethical magnitude that being on the correct side of history becomes a signifier of moral character for generations to come. Global warming is such an issue.

Indigenous peoples and the developing world are least responsible for climate change, least able to adapt to it, and most vulnerable to its impacts. As the United Nations Climate Conference in Paris approaches, the leaders of the industrialized world shoulder a grave responsibility for the consequences of our current and past carbon emissions.

CC1

Yet it looks unlikely that the international community will mandate even the greenhouse gas reductions necessary to give us a two thirds chance of limiting global warming to 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. At the moment, even if countries meet their current non-binding pledges to reduce carbon emissions, we will still be on course to reach 3 degrees Celsius by the end of this century.

This is profoundly shocking, given that any sacrifice involved in making those reductions is far overshadowed by the catastrophes we are likely to face if we do not: more extinctions of species and loss of ecosystems; increasing vulnerability to storm surges; more heatwaves; more intense precipitation; more climate related deaths and disease; more climate refugees; slower poverty reduction; less food security; and more conflicts worsened by these factors.

Given such high stakes, our leaders ought to be mustering planet-wide mobilization, at all societal levels, to limit global warming to no more than 1.5 degrees Celsius.

We undersigned concerned academics, researchers and scientists from around the world recognize the seriousness of our environmental situation and the special responsibility we owe our communities, future generations, and our fellow species.

We will strive to meet that responsibility in our educational and communicative endeavors.

We call upon our leaders to do what is necessary to prevent catastrophic climate change. With just as much urgency, we call upon our fellow citizens to hold their leaders responsible for vigorously addressing global warming.

Something to think about …. “The Destruction of America”!!

AMERICA WILL BE DESTROYED FROM WITHIN

Is it too cynical to say that this quote will always be poignant in American politics?

Can you truly look at the current state of affairs and refute what Mr. Lincoln said?

I’m feeling pessimistic and truly don’t see a way back.

Has America crossed the point of no return?

Prophetic words indeed … in my humble opinion.

Abraham Lincoln (February 12, 1809 – April 15, 1865) was the 16th President of the United States, serving from March 1861 until his assassination in April 1865. Lincoln led the United States through its Civil War — its bloodiest war and its greatest moral, constitutional, and political crisis.

In doing so, he preserved the Union, abolished slavery, strengthened the federal government, and modernized the economy.

An exceptionally astute politician deeply involved with power issues in each state, Lincoln reached out to the War Democrats and managed his own re-election campaign in the 1864 presidential election. Anticipating the war’s conclusion, Lincoln pushed a moderate view of Reconstruction, seeking to reunite the nation speedily through a policy of generous reconciliation in the face of lingering and bitter divisiveness. On April 15, 1865, six days after the surrender of Confederate commanding general Robert E. Lee, Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth, a Confederate sympathizer.

Lincoln has been consistently ranked both by scholars and the public as one of the three greatest U.S. presidents.

These words, spoken by Mr. Lincoln, are as true today as they were when he first said them

At what point shall we expect the approach of danger? By what means shall we fortify against it?

Shall we expect some transatlantic military giant, to step the Ocean, and crush us at a blow?

Never!

All the armies of Europe, Asia and Africa combined, with all the treasure of the earth (our own excepted) in their military chest; with a Buonaparte for a commander, could not by force, take a drink from the Ohio, or make a track on the Blue Ridge, in a trial of a thousand years.

At what point then is the approach of danger to be expected?

I answer, if it ever reach us, it must spring up amongst us. It cannot come from abroad.

If destruction be our lot, we must ourselves be its author and finisher.

As a nation of freemen, we must live through all time, or die by suicide.

Thoughts for the day …. #146: “Misbehaving vs. Looting”!!

Whites

~~April 30, 2015~~

Black People Riot Over Injustice; White People Riot Over Pumpkins and Football

When ______ (fill in the name) was killed, there were riots. Those riots were no different from riots back in the day when black people got fed up with the injustice handed to them by the same people who were supposed to protect them.

When black people riot, it’s because of injustice—and that isn’t condoning the rioting that leaves black communities in shambles.

But let’s look at events in two white communities.

Yes, there were riots. No, they were not rioting about injustice. I’m quite sure that some of those who rioted don’t even care about the death of black men at the hands of police.

What were these white people rioting over?

Obama ISIS fight request sent to Congress

Washington (CNN)

President Barack Obama on Wednesday, February 11, made the case for Congress to formally authorize the use of military force in the war against ISIS, declaring that congressional passage of the measure makes the U.S. “strongest” in the fight, and that “ISIL is going to lose.”

“Now, make no mistake, this is a difficult mission and it will remain difficult for some time,” he said during an afternoon press conference. But, he added, “Our coalition is on the offensive, ISIL is on the defensive and ISIL is going to lose.”

Obama, flanked by Vice President Joe Biden, Secretary of State John Kerry and Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel, outlined the parameters of the request he delivered to Congress earlier that day. He said the bill reflects “our core objective to destroy ISIL,” and includes authority for a “systemic and sustained campaign of airstrikes,” support and training for forces on the ground and humanitarian assistance.

BernS4

The joint resolution would limit the President’s authority to wage a military campaign against ISIS to three years and does not authorize “enduring offensive ground combat operations,” according to text of the resolution.

In a letter to Congress, Obama explained that the draft resolution would give him the authority to authorize “ground combat operations in limited circumstances,” including rescue operations and special forces operations to “take military action against ISIL leadership.”

The resolution would also sunset the 2002 AUMF that spawned the Iraq War. Obama withdrew American troops from Iraq in 2011, but the military authorization remains in effect.

BernS1

Obama detailed the ISIS threat in a letter to Congress accompanying the draft legislation.

“The so-called Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) poses a threat to the people and stability of Iraq, Syria, and the broader Middle East, and to U.S. national security,” Obama writes. “It threatens American personnel and facilities located in the region and is responsible for the deaths of U.S. citizens”

As in the draft resolution, Obama goes on to name the Americans killed in ISIS captivity, “including James Foley, Steven Sotloff, Abdul-Rahman Peter Kassig, and Kayla Mueller.”

Urge Congress to reject another Authorization of Use of Military Force (AUMF) and stop perpetual wars that don’t make any of us safer.

On September 18th, 2001, President Bush and Congress signed into law the AUMF. This authorized the President to “use all necessary and appropriate force against those nations, organizations, or persons he determines planned, authorized, committed, or aided the terrorist attacks that occurred on September 11, 2001, or harbored such organizations or persons, in order to prevent any future acts of international terrorism against the United States by such nations, organizations or persons.”

Since then, we have

Spent over 1.5 TRILLION dollars in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Syria.;
Sacrificed and lost 67,802 American lives;
Taken the lives of at least 520,000 people in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Syria – the vast majority who have been civilians;
We have committed torture at Guantanamo, Abu Ghraib, and many other facilities throughout the world.

And with the AUMF, none of this even takes a vote of Congress anymore.

But now, Congress has the chance to repeal or revise another AUMF and put an end to this blanket authorization that will lead to billions more spent on foreign soil and handed out to defense contractors – and thousands more lives lost, both American and civilians abroad.

Sign this petition to urge Congress to take this opportunity to stop perpetual wars that don’t make any of us safer. http://www.bravenewfilms.org/nomorewa…
