Donald Trump — the post-truth 2016 candidate

We’ve been around the political block long enough to know that almost all presidential candidates exaggerate, dissemble, take statements out of context and, yes, lie.

But from the start of Donald Trump’s presidential campaign (remember Mexican rapists?), he has taken this to a level we haven’t seen before in American politics.

Consider just these two examples from the weekend.

First, Trump said on Saturday in Alabama:

“I watched when the World Trade Center came tumbling down. And I watched in Jersey City New Jersey, where thousands and thousands of people were cheering.”

In fact, as the New York Times writes, “No news reports exist of people cheering in the streets, and both police officials and the mayor of Jersey City have said that it did not happen. An Internet rumor about people cheering in the streets, which said it was in Paterson, not Jersey City, has been denied numerous times by city and police officials.” But when ABC pressed Trump on his statement, he stood his ground.

“It did happen. I saw it … It was on television. I saw it.”

Second, Trump retweeted a graphic claiming — falsely — that African Americans are responsible for the killing of most blacks and whites in America. “That is not true, the Washington Post notes. “According to data from the FBI, most whites are killed by whites, as most blacks are killed by blacks.

There’s an obvious reason for that: Most people are killed by someone they know.”

I do not get it. I simply don’t. It’s not even a matter of which political party anyone is affiliated with or which beliefs anyone holds. I grew up in Puerto Rico, a colony of the United States but never the less “US land”. I was brought up thinking how great the US was …. as a country, as a leader, as an example to the world.

I cannot believe what I’m seeing and hearing now.

Any human with decreased number of brain cells can get what this “person” is doing and saying. There are no limits to his “statements”, nothing is off limits. He’s raised the “idiocy bar” so high that the other presidential hopefuls have no other option but to go along or even come back with more asinine statements. If they don’t, they will be left in his dust.

It’s true … this man isn’t an embarassment of this country. He’s an indictment of it.

I pity the United States of America.

(And I am an American citizen)

Something to think about … “Citizens United”!!

Citizens United vs. Federal Election Commission, No. 08-205, 558 U.S. 310 (2010), is a U.S. constitutional law case dealing with the regulation of campaign spending by organizations.

The United States Supreme Court held that the First Amendment prohibited the government from restricting independent political expenditures by a nonprofit corporation. The principles articulated by the Supreme Court in the case have also been extended to for-profit corporations, labor unions and other associations.

In the case, the conservative lobbying group Citizens United wanted to air a film critical of Hillary Clinton and to advertise the film during television broadcasts in apparent violation of the 2002 Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act (commonly known as the McCain–Feingold Act or “BCRA”). Section 203 of BCRA defined an “electioneering communication” as a broadcast, cable, or satellite communication that mentioned a candidate within 60 days of a general election or 30 days of a primary, and prohibited such expenditures by corporations and unions.

The United States District Court for the District of Columbia held that §203 of BCRA applied and prohibited Citizens United from advertising the film Hillary: The Movie in broadcasts or paying to have it shown on television within 30 days of the 2008 Democratic primaries.

The Supreme Court reversed this decision, striking down those provisions of BCRA that prohibited corporations (including nonprofit corporations) and unions from making independent expenditures and “electioneering communications”. The majority decision overruled Austin v. Michigan Chamber of Commerce (1990) and partially overruled McConnell v. Federal Election Commission (2003).

The Court, however, upheld requirements for public disclosure by sponsors of advertisements (BCRA §201 and §311). The case did not involve the federal ban on direct contributions from corporations or unions to candidate campaigns or political parties, which remain illegal in races for federal office.

Today, the Supreme Court, of Chief Justice John Roberts, in a decision that might actually have more dire implications than “Dred Scott v Sandford,” declared that because of the alchemy of its 19th Century predecessors in deciding that corporations had all the rights of people, any restrictions on how these corporate-beings spend their money on political advertising, are unconstitutional.

In short, the first amendment — free speech for persons — which went into affect in 1791, applies to corporations, which were not recognized as the equivalents of persons until 1886. In short, there are now no checks on the ability of corporations or unions or other giant aggregations of power to decide our elections.

None. They can spend all the money they want. And if they can spend all the money they want — sooner, rather than later — they will implant the legislators of their choice in every office from President to head of the Visiting Nurse Service.

Thanksgiving Day Google Logo Serves Up An Animated Turkey For The Holiday

Google’s Thanksgiving Day Doodle is accompanied by a link answering the question “What is tryptophan?”

To celebrate today’s holiday, Google’s homepage includes an animated Thanksgiving Day turkey with sharing icons to post the bouncing turkey on your social pages.

Along with the illustrated bird, is a link answering the question “What is tryptophan?” to clarify why it’s so difficult to stay awake after ingesting large quantities of turkey.

The backdrop for today’s Thanksgiving Day Google Doodle includes an arrangement of autumn inspired leaves spelling out Google, but after record-breaking snowfalls across the Northeast, a winter-themed animation probably would have been more relevant.

Here’s hoping you stay warm, have plenty of food, and much to be thankful for. Happy Thanksgiving from Search Engine Land!

Thanksgiving Day is a national holiday celebrated primarily in the United States and Canada as a day of giving thanks for the blessing of the harvest and of the preceding year. It is currently celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November in the United States by federal legislation in 1941. It has been an annual tradition in the United States by presidential proclamation since 1863 and by state legislation since the Founding Fathers of the United States. Historically, Thanksgiving has traditionally been a celebration of the blessings of the (agricultural) year, including the harvest.

As President of the United States, George Washington proclaimed the first nation-wide thanksgiving celebration in America marking November 26, 1789, “as a day of public thanksgiving and prayer to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God”. By now most folks know that the U.S. Supreme Court did something that changed how money can be spent in elections and by whom, but what happened and why should you care?

The Citizens United ruling, released in January 2010, tossed out the corporate and union ban on making independent expenditures and financing electioneering communications. It gave corporations and unions the green light to spend unlimited sums on ads and other political tools, calling for the election or defeat of individual candidates.

In a nutshell, the high court’s 5-4 decision said that it is OK for corporations and labor unions to spend as much as they want to convince people to vote for or against a candidate.

It starts from the Superiority Syndrome: People acting as if they’re more important than a U.S. President — when they clearly are not. To fingers in the face. To people questioning his already established and proven citizenship.

The incidents of disrespect towards President Obama continue.

When people criticize Administration policy, that’s just politics.  But several incidents directed at this President appear to find new lows.  Of course, people can disagree with the President. But, why can’t people respect the Office of the Presidency?

The very public nature of disrespect towards President Obama is noteworthy.

The Money Behind the Elections

Money has become an ongoing and heated topic in American elections.
In 2010, the Supreme Court cancelled any limits on the amount of cash corporations, unions and rich individuals could spend during elections.

Super PACs, once a term that drew befuddlement, is now part of the mainstream political lexicon, describing committees that can spend as much as they want on a campaign just so long as they don’t work directly with the candidate.

My Concerns are
Many think this OIL is for us. Wrong …. 98% is for export ONLY. While using the middle of our finest land. Many land owners and farmers will HAVE no choice on this and THEY have to do the major clean up if a spill. It clearly states that in the agreement.

So while this OIL is NOT for us? I ask you why we would even consider it? We are messing up our waters, so now we want to possibly destroyed our heartland?
Do home owners and land owners have NO rights?

I am pretty upset about this. I hope president Obama vetos this. Can he?

Instead, they promised to compromise with the president.

CNN’s Carol Costello hyped how “Republicans have managed to use fear so successfully in these midterm elections” during interviews of two former governors on Tuesday’s CNN Newsroom. During a segment with Democrat Bill Richardson, Costello lamented that Democrats are “not talking about President Obama’s more positive accomplishments in office,” and asserted that “those things are certainly overshadowed by the anxiety that voters feel about ISIS and Ebola.” The anchor also underlined that “fear is a powerful motivator.

A Flood of Late Spending on Midterm Elections, From Murky Sources

A stealthy coterie of difficult-to-trace outside groups is slipping tens of millions of dollars of attacks ads and negative automated telephone calls into the final days of the midterm campaign, helping fuel an unprecedented surge of last-minute spending on Senate races.

Much of the advertising is being timed to ensure that no voter will know who is paying for it until after the election on Tuesday. Some of the groups are “super PACs” that did not exist before Labor Day but have since spent heavily on political advertising, adding to the volatility of close Senate and House races.
