Where’s our Martin Niemöller?

This graph, presents a poem, which been shared plenty of times in the blogosphere. Please, allow me the opportunity to present it again.

I want to apply it to our present time.

I’ve seen it many times.

Every time it makes me think.

More so now, in view of the ugly turn in the road where American politics seem to be headed.

To me, the bottom line is that if you don’t speak up for others who are somehow persecuted, eventually your turn will come and there will be no one to stand up for your when you are persecuted.

It’s time to stand up and hold your ground.

Martin Niemöller (1892–1984) was a prominent Protestant pastor who emerged as an outspoken public foe of Adolf Hitler and spent the last seven years of Nazi rule in concentration camps.

The quotation stems from Niemöller’s lectures during the early postwar period. Different versions of the quotation exist. These can be attributed to the fact that Niemöller spoke extemporaneously and in a number of settings.

Much controversy surrounds the content of the poem as it has been printed in varying forms, referring to diverse groups such as Catholics, Jehovah’s Witnesses, Jews, Trade Unionists, or Communists depending upon the version. Nonetheless his point was that Germans – in particular, he believed, the leaders of the Protestant churches – had been complicit through their silence in the Nazi imprisonment, persecution, and murder of millions of people.

PLAIN RHETORIC AND PURE LIES

Donald Trump — the post-truth 2016 candidate

We’ve been around the political block long enough to know that almost all presidential candidates exaggerate, dissemble, take statements out of context and, yes, lie.

But from the start of Donald Trump’s presidential campaign (remember Mexican rapists?), he has taken this to a level we haven’t seen before in American politics.

Consider just these two examples from the weekend.

First, Trump said on Saturday in Alabama:

“I watched when the World Trade Center came tumbling down. And I watched in Jersey City New Jersey, where thousands and thousands of people were cheering.”

In fact, as the New York Times writes, “No news reports exist of people cheering in the streets, and both police officials and the mayor of Jersey City have said that it did not happen. An Internet rumor about people cheering in the streets, which said it was in Paterson, not Jersey City, has been denied numerous times by city and police officials.” But when ABC pressed Trump on his statement, he stood his ground.

“It did happen. I saw it … It was on television. I saw it.”

Second, Trump retweeted a graphic claiming — falsely — that African Americans are responsible for the killing of most blacks and whites in America. “That is not true, the Washington Post notes. “According to data from the FBI, most whites are killed by whites, as most blacks are killed by blacks.

There’s an obvious reason for that: Most people are killed by someone they know.”

I do not get it. I simply don’t. It’s not even a matter of which political party anyone is affiliated with or which beliefs anyone holds. I grew up in Puerto Rico, a colony of the United States but never the less “US land”. I was brought up thinking how great the US was …. as a country, as a leader, as an example to the world.

I cannot believe what I’m seeing and hearing now.

Any human with decreased number of brain cells can get what this “person” is doing and saying. There are no limits to his “statements”, nothing is off limits. He’s raised the “idiocy bar” so high that the other presidential hopefuls have no other option but to go along or even come back with more asinine statements. If they don’t, they will be left in his dust.

It’s true … this man isn’t an embarassment of this country. He’s an indictment of it.

I pity the United States of America.

(And I am an American citizen)

Today marks the 16th annual Transgender Day of Rememberance, after the first event was organized by Gwendolyn Ann Smith in Allston, Mass., to memorialize Rita Hester — a trans woman of color killed in 1998.

Every year since, growing numbers of trans people and advocates worldwide take a moment to pause and remember the countless lives lost around the globe to transphobic violence.

The somber occasion serves as a memorial event in which trans people and allies can mourn their dead, celebrate the lives they lived and as a popular hashtag in the wake of unabated anti-trans violence proclaims, #SayHerName.

As the names listed in the graphics demonstrate, certain nations — the United States and Brazil — have particularly acute problems with fatal transphobic violence. The number of trans women killed this year in the U.S., for instance, is nearly double that of the total killed last year.

But it’s also worth noting that in many countries around the world, no formal system exists to report the deaths of trans people, and repressive societies combined with oppressive policing worldwide often give trans people good cause to be wary of law-enforcement officials. 

So while we mourn those whose names are listed below, take a moment to memorialize those whose names we will never know — because they, too, had lives, and loves, and passions that were extinguished because of hate.

INFORMATIONAL POST

I don’t live too far from Ocala.

It’s a tolerable drive from where I am. I’ve been there several times because that’s where my tattoo artist lives and has her shop.

She posted the collage pictures of the “celebration” on Sunday, July 12. She posted them and said that this was the view in front of her shop.

I must confess that I wasn’t really aware of the clear and true meaning of this flag until the event in South Carolina.

I have read post after post and believe that this is a symbol that brings very painful memories to members of the community and the nation.

To me it’s still a symbol of racism, race, death, white supremacy …. but what do I know?

I’m Puerto Rican.

Marion County Commission votes unanimously to fly Confederate flag once again

There’s always got to be the one place where they buck the trends, right?

Contrarian Marion County, Florida, is that place. Commissioners voted unanimously to put the confederate flag right back up the flagpole, with the excuse that it represents “history.”

I suppose that “history” depends on which perspective you’re looking through, doesn’t it?

Officials in Florida’s Marion County have decided to buck the national — not counting Mississippi — trend of removing the Confederate battle flag from government buildings by restoring the one they took down after the June shootings in Charleston, South Carolina.

At the Marion County Commission meeting Tuesday morning, “several” members of general public argued that the flag ought to be restored, and the commission voted to do exactly that.

Members of the commission assured the Ocala Star Banner’s Kristine Cane, however, that the flag would be accompanied by an informative display that would outline its historical significance.

At the time of its removal, a spokeswoman for Interim County Administrator Bill Kauffman said that it was necessary because of “perceived connotations of displaying the flag at governmental agencies.”

We sent FOX 13 Chief Investigator Craig Patrick to ask why, and Commission Chairman Stan McClain sat down with him.

McClain said the decision was based on history. So Craig asked him to explain the history, and his vote.

~HERE IS HIS LAME ANSWER~

“There are five flags that flew over Florida during periods of time and this is one of the five flags,” he said, later conceding, “you could probably add more.”
