Thoughts for today, #288 .… “We Come in MANY Colors”!!

~~November 17, 2015~~

“Our skins are different.

We have many colors.

We are all Puerto Rican (Borinqueños).

Puerto Ricans (Spanish: Puertorriqueños; Taíno: boricua) are the inhabitants or citizens of Puerto Rico. Puerto Rico is a multi-ethnic nation, home to people of different ethnic and national backgrounds. As a result, some Puerto Ricans do not treat their nationality as an ethnicity but as a citizenship with various ethnicities and national origins comprising the “Puerto Rican people“.

Despite its multi-ethnic composition, the culture held in common by most Puerto Ricans is referred to as mainstream Puerto Rican culture, a Western culture largely derived from the traditions of Western European migrants, beginning with the early Spanish settlers, along with other Europeans arriving later such as the Corsicans, Irish, Germans and French, along with a strong West African culture which has been influential.

Puerto Ricans commonly refer to themselves as boricuas. “The majority of Puerto Ricans regard themselves as being of mixed Spanish-European descent. Recent DNA sample studies have concluded that the three largest components of the Puerto Rican genetic profile are in fact indigenous Taíno, European, and African”.

At the end of the day .… “Strawberry Fields Forever…. from another perspective”!!

~~September 3, 2015~~

La Santa Cecilia ‘Strawberry Fields Forever‘ Music Video Pays Tribute to Migrant Workers With Beatles Cover

On July 10, La Santa Cecilia wowed more than 1,500 Latino leaders, including first lady Michelle Obama and superstar Jennifer Lopez, with its rendition of “Strawberry Fields Forever” at the LULAC Unity Luncheon hosted by the National convention of the League of United Latin American Citizens — and they’re doing it again, but this time its online for the whole world to see.

On Aug. 4, the LA-based Mexican-American band and 2014 Grammy winner for Best Latin Rock and Alternative album for “Treinta Dias” (30 Days), continued its affection for The Beatles with the release of a music video featuring its rendition of “Strawberry Fields Forever.”

“Hoy es el gran día!! Today is the day!!

Our rendition of STRAWBERRY FIELDS FOREVER music video is out!!!

Click it, watch it, share it, tell us what you think!!” the band wrote on its official Facebook page.

La Santa Cecilia, which is named after the patron saint of musicians, includes lead vocalist Marisol “La Marisoul” Hernandez, accordionist and requintero Jose “Pepe” Carlos, bassist Alex Bendana and percussionist Miguel Ramirez.

The bilingual band’s members are “first generation children of immigrants” as well as an “undocumented dreamer” (Carlos) — and because of this, they have become ambassadors for immigration reform using both their musical and personal platforms. Latin Post had the pleasure of meeting and seeing the band perform at the annual Pachanga Latino Music Festival in Austin, Texas.

“Strawberry Fields Forever” holds a special place in the hearts of Americans, Brits, and the world, as well as this talented, bilingual, multicultural quartet. While the band’s new music video is vibrant, adorable and animated, it has a powerful message behind it.

“We started playing the song, and one day we started leaving L.A. to play in Bakersfield and we saw the fruit fields and the strawberry fields, and listening to the song on my iPod I thought ‘Man, it connected,’ seeing all these migrant workers, working for our ‘Strawberry Fields Forever.’

It was like ‘woah,’ and you just connect a lyric.

It’s a trip how a song that was made by these four Brits turned into something that I feel connected to with migrant workers and the beauty of their work,” Hernandez said during an earlier visit to the GRAMMY Museum.

“I guess it’s a way for us to acknowledge their work and for people just to remember where all our amazing fruit comes from, and it’s so easy to grab at grocery stores, but it comes from somewhere else, and it’s good to acknowledge the people behind the scenes, no?”

Check out La Santa Cecilia’s spin on “Strawberry Field Forever.”

Thoughts for today, #223 …. “Excellent job, Mr. Jorge Ramos”!!

~~August 27, 2015~~

In taking on Jorge Ramos, Donald Trump may have tussled with the wrong media star

In his latest showdown, Donald Trump ordered Univision anchor Jorge Ramos out of a news conference Tuesday, telling him to “go back to Univision.”

Ramos, who like Trump is known for his confrontational style, didn’t back down until he was escorted out of the room by security. Eventually, Ramos was invited back, where he sparred with Trump over the Republican candidate’s immigration proposals.

But prodding Ramos, who has been called the Spanish-language Walter Cronkite, could prove dangerous for Trump, who thus far been something of a Teflon candidate.

Ramos is a very important figure for American Latinos

Ramos has a personal connection to immigration issues

Ramos sees himself as an advocate for millions of Latino immigrants, and so do they

Much like Trump, Ramos seems to welcome conflict and doesn’t often back down

At the end of the day …. “Pitbull, the Cuban Rapper has a message for the Donald”!!

~~July 17, 2015~~

Pitbull Won’t Stay at Donald Trump Hotels, Tells Him to Watch Out for El Chapo

Pitbull is no longer giving Donald Trump any business!

The 34-year-old Cuban rapper gave his thoughts on Trump’s controversial comments about Mexican immigrants during his recent appearance on Fusion’s America With Jorge Ramos, and insisted that the 69-year-old businessman is not actually ignorant.

“Donald Trump doesn’t become Donald Trump by being ignorant,” Pitbull explained. “He may have a big ego — we’ve all known that for years. What I think is that he found a button that he likes, and he sees that he got people mad and hot and he’s gonna keep pushing it.”

That being said, he can no longer stay in Trump’s hotels or play in his casinos.

“Due to what’s been said, I wouldn’t be able to,” he said. “I can’t, just for the simple fact that you’re talking about a culture that I ride, I die for.

This culture is the only reason I’m having this conversation right now.”

But the “Timber” rapper took it one step further during his acceptance speech for winning Top Urban Artist at the Premios Juventud Awards, presented by Univision, on Thursday night,  July 16, calling out Trump pretty bluntly.

“Watch out for El Chapo,” he said in Spanish, referring to Joaquin Guzman, the fugitive Mexican drug lord who escaped from a maximum-security jail last weekend.

Donald Trump cannot be president!” he also said, calling on other presidential candidates such as Hillary Clinton, Jeb Bush and Marco Rubio to step their games up.
