Celine Dion sings L’Hymne a L’Amour in tribute to Paris attack victims at American Music Awards 2015

The American Music Awards took a sombre turn on Sunday when Celine Dion sang in tribute to the victims of Paris’s terror attacks.

The Canadian singer covered Edith Piaf’s L’Hymne a L’Amour after actor-musician Jared Leto delivered an emotional speech about the deadly events.

Leto spoke about an impromptu show his band Thirty Seconds To Mars had performed at Le Bataclan in Paris, the scene where 89 people lost their lives in the attacks 10 days ago.

He said: “Seven months later that same venue was under siege, one of a series of attacks that changed the world forever.
“Tonight we honor the victims of the unimaginable violence that took place in Paris and around the world.

“France matters, Syria matters, Russia matters, Mali matters, the Middle East matters, the entire world matters and peace is possible.”

Introducing Dion’s performance, Leto added:

“Many of us here are the sons and daughters of immigrants and Steve Jobs, the son of a Syrian immigrant, and President Barack Obama.

“The American Music Awards wanted to show its support for the people of France and the entire world.”

Solutions To Terrorism: It’s Time To Wake Up

The world was shocked when Paris was attacked by extremist on the evening of November 13  and the attacks in Beirut the day before.  Humanity weeps for those we have lost in these tragic events, but it we need to look at why this keeps happening.

Russell Brand has published a video of what he thinks we need to do to end terrorism.

His ideas are great.

We must come to the understanding that we are all connected and that we share this planet with each other.

Violence is never the solution to violence, that will only fuel the flames.

If we show nothing but love to each other that will take the power away from the brutality that humans are capable of.

It is time for us to rid ourselves of these wars and unite as one on this planet.  When the history of man has reached its closure will it be ridden with acts of hatred .… or will it be the story of a logical and understanding species?

Mankind continues to wage war even though the consequences often breed nothing but misery.

However, when a person is called to defend his or her country, or protect other defenseless people, it is his duty to fight.

There is no question that there is evil in the world and we must not rest on our laurels and say it is none of our business.

We cannot stand by and watch while others are being persecuted.

It is the duty of mankind to uphold justice.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu provoked controversy Wednesday, October 21, 2015, hours before a visit to Germany, by saying the former Muslim elder in Jerusalem convinced Adolf Hitler to exterminate the Jews.

In a speech to the Zionist Congress late Tuesday, October 20, 2015, Netanyahu referred to a series of attacks by Muslims against Jews in Palestine during the 1920’s that he said were instigated by the then-mufti of Jerusalem, Haj Amin al-Husseini.

Husseini famously flew to visit Hitler in Berlin in 1941, and Netanyahu said that meeting was instrumental in the Nazi leader’s decision to launch a campaign to annihilate the Jews.

“Hitler didn’t want to exterminate the Jews at the time, he wanted to expel the Jews,” Netanyahu said in the speech. “And Haj Amin al-Husseini went to Hitler and said, ‘If you expel them, they’ll all come here.’

“‘So what should I do with them?’” Netanyahu said Hitler asked the mufti, who responded: “‘Burn them.’”

Palestinian officials said Netanyahu appeared to be absolving Hitler of the murder of 6 million Jews in order to lay the blame on Muslims. Twitter was awash with criticism.

“It is a sad day in history when the leader of the Israeli government hates his neighbor so much that he is willing to absolve the most notorious war criminal in history, Adolf Hitler, of the murder of 6 million Jews,” said Saeb Erekat, the Palestine Liberation Organization’s secretary general.

“Mr. Netanyahu should stop using this human tragedy to score points for his political end,” said Erekat, the chief Palestinian negotiator with the Israelis.

Even Netanyahu’s defense minister, close ally Moshe Yaalon, said the prime minister had got it wrong.

After four years of Syria’s war, no end in sight

Syria’s rebellion has been derailed by ISIL and waning Western support, but rebels say they haven’t lost fight

Four years ago, tens of thousands of Syrians who took to the streets during the first days of rage against 40 years of authoritarian rule by the Assad family. The protests, demanding democratic reform, were peaceful, but the regime cracked down violently. Many anti-regime activists responded by taking up arms, and full-scale war soon erupted.

After the deaths of more than 220,000 people, the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad remains unmoved, and the struggle for control of Syria has devolved into a multifaceted war with no clear endgame in sight.

Regime forces have only accelerated their use of internationally prohibited barrel bombs and other brutal weaponry against rebel fighters and civilians alike, according to human rights groups. And so far, Assad’s key allies have been steadfast. Russia’s support on the U.N. Security Council has been crucial, recently blocking a referral of Assad to the International Criminal Court for war crimes, and Iran has been a steady source of funds and fighters, sending Iranian militias — along with Lebanese Shia Hezbollah fighters — against the Syrian rebels, who are mostly Sunni.

The international community has all but abandoned the idea of peace talks after several summits in Geneva — involving rebel factions, the regime and both sides’ foreign benefactors — ended in failure last year. The leading Western-backed opposition faction, the Syrian National Coalition, insisted on Assad’s departure as a condition for any talks; Assad, of course, dismissed that notion out of hand.

Absent a surge in Western support for the rebels, however, many analysts feel Syria is heading toward a situation in which Assad retains control of most of the important population centers, from Damascus in the south to Lattakia along the Mediterranean coast, while various armed groups, including ISIL, fight over the rest. In effect, Assad could turn into Syria’s “strongest warlord,” Lund said.

“I think the idea is that Syria will not be a united country for a very long time to come, if ever.”

That outcome is not what the 2011 revolutionaries had in mind. Ahmad, the former Revolutionary Command spokeswoman, said her side is trying to convince the world that the uprising against Assad is everyone’s war. ISIL, she noted, has ambitions of expanding beyond its current territory in Syria and Iraq.

“Syrians feel the world has abandoned them,” she said. “But maybe when you have nothing left to lose, you become more determined to fight to the end.”

Meanwhile, millions of refugees are burdening Syria’s neighbors, who fear their guests will become a permanent and destabilizing presence unless the war ends.

MIGRANT

1. An organism, especially an animal, that moves from one region to another (as for breeding) or that has established itself in an area where it previously did not exist.
2. An itinerant worker who travels from one area to another in search of work.
3. A person who leaves one country to settle permanently in another; an immigrant.

REFUGEE

A refugee, in contrast to a migrant, is according to the Geneva Convention on Refugees applied to a person who is outside their home country of citizenship because they have well-founded grounds for fear of persecution because of their race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group or political opinion, and is unable to obtain sanctuary from their home country or, owing to such fear, is unwilling to avail themselves of the protection of that country; or in the case of not having a nationality and being outside their country of former habitual residence as a result of such event, is unable or, owing to such fear, is unwilling to return to their country of former habitual residence. Migrants move willingly. Refugees are forced to move.

Why would anyone, settled in their lives, willingly leave their place of birth?

This is the place where their family roots were established. Leaving behind their possessions, their friends, their families … all that is familiar to them.

Only a narrow minded person would think that refugees are willingly exposing themselves, their families and their children to the dangers of escaping from their homes.

Do they have homes left or have they been bombed persistently and destroyed?

Their panoramic view is one of crumbled buildings, torn up roads, no schools, hospitals or markets.

Imagine … just try to imagine.

They have nothing left but themselves and their families.

What other option to they have?

Damn if you stay .. persecution, torture, abuse, rape, slavery.

Damn if they leave … displacement, danger, exposure, uncertainty.

They have to run an leave. And what greets them?

More of the same.

They are considered pariahs and are persecuted much more.

They are unwanted, they are a burden.

We need to keep in mind how this “mass migration” started.

Major Mark Bieger found this little girl after the car bomb that attacked our guys while kids were crowding around. The soldiers here have been angry and sad for two days. They are angry because the terrorists could just as easily have waited a block or two and attacked the patrol away from the kids.

Instead, the suicide bomber drove his car and hit the Stryker when about twenty children were jumping up and down and waving at the soldiers. Major Bieger, I had seen him help rescue some of our guys a week earlier during another big attack, took some of our soldiers and rushed this little girl to our hospital. He wanted her to have American surgeons and not to go to the Iraqi hospital. She didn’t make it.

I snapped this picture when Major Bieger ran to take her away.

He kept stopping to talk with her and hug her.

The reaction to my photo of Major Bieger cradling Farah, the little girl who died in his arms, provoked a flood of messages and heartfelt responses from caring people around the world.

SAD REALITY IN SOME PARTS OF OUR WORLD

Stoning, or lapidation, is a form of capital punishment whereby a group throws stones at a person until he or she dies. No individual among the group can be identified as the one who kills the subject. This is in contrast to the case of a judicial executioner. Slower than other forms of execution, stoning is a form of execution by torture.

Stoning is called Rajm in Islamic literature, and a practice found in United Arab Emirates, Iran, Iraq, Qatar, Mauritania, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan, Yemen, Northern Nigeria, Aceh in Indonesia, Brunei, and Pakistan. In some countries such as Afghanistan and Iraq, stoning has been declared illegal but is practiced extra-judicially.

In several others, people have sentenced to death by stoning, but the sentence has not been carried out. In modern times, allegations of stoning are politically sensitive, as in case of Iran, which describes such allegations as political propaganda.

The episode of Madam Secretary that aired Sunday, April  night features a storyline involving the Human Rights Campaign.  In Sunday’s episode, our fictional characters interact with the head of the Human Rights Campaign. Though it’s not actually the head of HRC. It’s a fictionalized version, played by BD Wong. But still, the very real Human Rights Campaign is portrayed on our fictional television show.

So how did this come to pass?

In conceiving this episode (the penultimate one of the season), the writing team, led by Madam Secretary creator and show runner Barbara Hall, knew that we wanted to wrap up a season-long story arc involving a nuclear treaty with Iran (a fictional one, though we are amazed at the parallels to real world goings on). We didn’t want to get into the minutiae of the negotiations, but we wanted to throw an obstacle in the way of the treaty. That’s when we thought, what if on the day of the treaty signing a gay man in Iran was going to be stoned to death?

For the “crime” of being gay in Iran.

The story forces our characters to confront head on the horror of death by stoning. They also wrestle with the issue of making a deal with a country that enforces such horrors. Is it a deal with the devil? Or is it good politics?

As in the real world, the answer is elusive.
