Thoughts for today, #298 .… “Citizen of the World”!!

CITIZEN OF THE WORLD

In broad usage, the term global citizenship or world citizenship typically defines a person who places their identity with a “global community” above their identity as a citizen of a particular nation or place.

The idea is that one’s identity transcends geography or political borders and that the planetary human community is interdependent and whole; humankind is essentially one. The term has use in education and political philosophy and has enjoyed popular use in social movements such as the “World Citizen” movement and the Mondialisation movement.

I am a citizen of the EARTH
I am here since my birth
Fun and joy – there is no dearth
Enjoyment can expand your girth

Stay anywhere – on an island or firth
You will end up in a state of mirth
Anywhere from Paris to Perth
Living is bliss, worth your worth

I am a citizen of the GLOBE
My house is made of adobe
Travel from Korea to Kobe
There is a place even for a microbe

Dressed up well to the earlobe
Butterflies wear a colorful robe
In her children lived mother Niobe
History is worth a probe

I am a citizen of the UNIVERSE
Not national or international but diverse
On humanity, racism is a curse
In divinity, one should immerse

Tender feelings one should nurse
Our children are our wealth, purse
Never use harsh words or be terse
Being good is better than being worse

I am a citizen of the WORLD
Sans geopolitical boundaries, my spirit unfurled

Something to think about …. “VA Motto: To care for him who shall have borne the battle and for his widow, and his orphan”!!

The Origin of the VA Motto
Lincoln’s Second Inaugural Address

With the words,

“To care for him who shall have borne the battle and for his widow, and his orphan,” President Lincoln affirmed the government’s obligation to care for those injured during the war and to provide for the families of those who perished on the battlefield.

Today, a pair of metal plaques bearing those words flank the entrance to the Washington, D.C. headquarters of the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). VA is the federal agency responsible for serving the needs of veterans by providing health care, disability compensation and rehabilitation, education assistance, home loans, burial in a national cemetery, and other benefits and services.

At some later point, this motto was expanded to include all the veterans returning from their service.

I know, I worked for the VA for almost 28 years.
