This Thanksgiving, No Place for Refugees at the American Table

In the wake of the horrific attacks in Paris on Nov. 13, there has been a crushing backlash against refugees from the wars in Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan. As Americans prepare for one of the most popular national holidays, Thanksgiving, which commemorates the support and nourishment provided by the indigenous people to English refugees seeking a better life free from religious persecution, a wave of xenophobia is sweeping the country.

In the U.S. Congress, no less than six separate bills have been put forward to block any federal funding to resettle refugees from Syria or Iraq and to empower states to deny entry into their “territory.” 

Imagine if all of a sudden we had 50 “statelets” creating their own border checkpoints, stopping all travelers, looking for anyone suspicious, i.e., any and all Syrians.

So far, 31 state governors have essentially demanded this.

Republican Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback issued an executive order forbidding any agency of state government from cooperating in any way with Syrian refugee support efforts. House Speaker Paul Ryan and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell have called for a pause in the Syrian refugee program, with the support of Democratic Sen. Chuck Schumer.

It has been almost 400 years since that first, fateful Thanksgiving feast in Massachusetts.

Xenophobic policies like those threatening to shut out refugees from these wars, if allowed to stand, should serve as a shameful centerpiece at every Thanksgiving table this year.

Brian K. Sims (born September 16, 1978) is a Democratic member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in the 182nd district. Elected in 2012, Sims is also a lawyer and activist on LGBT civil rights.

Sims is the first openly gay elected state legislator in Pennsylvania history.

Questions Gay People Have For Straight People

There are some questions that are not only impolite to bring up — asking them at all can make you look pretty stupid. The old adage about their being no dumb questions is fully incorrect and untrue: There are stupid questions. There are questions you don’t have to answer and should never, ever feel obligated to even respond to, given the personal nature and well, how dumb and awful they may be.

 A new video from BuzzFeed Yellow highlights that exquisitely well in 9 Questions Gay People Have For Straight People. And when I refer to “dumb questions that you never have to answer,” I’m not talking about the questions these gay people have for straight people. I’m talking about the painfully common questions and comments that straight people ask gay people all the time, which make the basis for this video. 

It’s astounding the amount and depth of personal questions people — sometimes strangers — feel comfortable asking a person. I regularly field queries as to “where I’m from” as well as my sexual orientation. I won’t even answer those here now because—ahem — I don’t have to. No one has to. Yet, these questions keep popping up with alarming abundance, primarily regarding sexuality and especially directed toward queer people. You’d never in a million years consider referring to an African-American person’s racial identity as a “lifestyle choice”— so why do people continue to ask similar questions to gay people about their “lifestyle”? Neither was exactly an option on a multiple choice list that new babies are given when “choosing” who they want to be. In a hilarious response to these common questions, a group of gay people totally shut down any follow-ups.

There can never be enough reminders that everyone has a personal responsibility to work towards truly diversifying representation in art and media.

Something to think about … “The Office of the POTUS”!!

RESPECT FOR THE OFFICE OF PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES

“The office of the President, no matter who sits in the oval office, deserves our respect. If we so belittle the office through excessive partisanship we lessen the authority that the office deserves.

The President of the United States is our leader, our chief executive, the person who the rest of the world looks to as representing the United States.

How far do we take partisanship before it becomes demeaning to the office? Is our political system so warped that what is best for the country becomes less important than partisan gain? The phrase the loyal opposition, is important to consider, in that it implies that a person from the opposition party is still loyal to their oath and their nation while still opposing when it is appropriate what the opposition party or in this case the President of the United States has done.

Is anything fair game? Is it okay to lie about them? Is it okay to personally attack the wife of the President or his or her children, or even the dog?

What are the limitations?”

My thoughts on this topic are very personal to me and I understand that all are entitled to their own. I don’t mean for this post to be a political one. 

I was always taught that we needed to “respect the office” of the President of the United States. 

Without bringing politics and different ideologies into this, can anyone really say that this office has been respected since 2008 as is had always been before?

I wonder ….
