Like a good white, middle-class American woman, I used to pride myself on trying to be “colorblind,” on saying to my friends of different ethnicities, “I don’t think of you as Black or White, as Hispanic or Asian. Heck, I don’t even *see* the color of your skin.”

Until the day my friend Isobel brought me up short. “What you are saying when you say that,” she said, “is that you don’t even see who I am. You are saying that you are choosing not to see a huge part of my identity, because who I am — the experiences I have had, the prevailing culture I grew up in — has been profoundly shaped by the color of my skin.” (Or words to that effect; I am taking some editorial license here.)

It was a slap across the face that opened my eyes and changed me. Because the harsh truth, once I admitted it, is that when I was saying, “I don’t see you as Black or Asian,” I was really saying, “I am pretending that you are just like me white.” The harsh truth is that I was projecting my own life experiences and expectations onto them. The harsh truth is that my nonwhite friends have been subjected to prejudices and humiliations and fears that I will never, ever experience. And those experiences are part of who they are as human beings.

Yes, we must treat all people the same, regardless of the color of their skin, but we — especially we white Americans — have to stop pretending that we don’t see the differences, have to stop pretending that we all have the same “American experience.” We must be willing to say that our society is NOT colorblind, that our society does not treat all people the same.

We must stand up and say, “This is wrong.”

Officer Who Shot Tamir Rice Had ‘Dismal’ Handgun Performance

The Cleveland police officer who shot a 12-year-old boy carrying a pellet gun last month had been judged not up to the job of police work two years earlier when he worked for a different force, according to internal memos published by Cleveland.com on Thursday.

On November 22, Officer Timothy Loehmann of the Cleveland Division of Police shot and killed 12-year-old Tamir Rice within seconds after arriving at a Cleveland park where Rice was playing with the gun.

TAMIR RICE AND ANDY LOPEZ CRUZ

Anyone else tired of kids being killed by police? Don’t try to justify it, these are very well armed cops who should be trained to deescalate these types of situations. If you are defending a cop killing a 12 or 13 year old when there are other non lethal options, you need to ask yourself why.

Learn how cops gunned down this 12 year old within 2 seconds of being at the scene.  Video: http://bit.ly/1ym79Mo

This issue has been all over social media and the blogosphere. The results show the power of people when joined in a common effort. The lady stated her opinion, not expecting the backlash. She issued an apology which wasn’t accepted. She resigned her post.

“During the annual presidential pardoning of a turkey on Thanksgiving, Sasha and Malia Obama acted like typical teenagers during the ceremony in a way that suggested they were indifferent to the occasion. Among the signs were arm folding and eye rolling, and the media had fun playing and commenting on the footage. Again, most sane people had no problem with the girls’ behavior, because we all know what’s like to be a teenager who is embarrassed around their parents, even if it is for no particular reason.”

#Ferguson …. Story Behind This Powerful Photo of a Black Boy Hugging a White Cop!!

~~December 1, 2014~~

DARE WE HOPE?

And then there are things that fill your heart with inexplicable hope

“The Story Behind This Powerful Photo of a Black Boy Hugging a White Cop at a Ferguson Demonstration”

Amidst the many photos of hate, anger, sadness and sometimes outright destruction that have flooded the media since a grand jury decided not to indict Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson, sparking riots and protests across the US, there are glimmers of hope and humanity.

One such glimmer was captured by Oregon-based freelance photographer Jonny Nguyen at a Ferguson demonstration in Portland earlier this week.

BlackB

The photo shows 12-year-old Devonte Hart, his eyes welling with tears as he hugs Portland Police Sgt. Bret Barnum, and the story behind it was reported first by The Oregonian in an article published earlier today.

Apparently Hart — whose full profile is a truly inspirational read — was at the demonstration holding a sign that said “free hugs” when Barnum noticed him with tears in his eyes. He motioned the young man over and the two began talking.

After they were done, Barnum pointed to the sign and asked “Do I get one of those?” A question Hart answered with a tearful hug. Fortunately for those of us who need to have our faith in humanity restored on occasion, Nguyen was there with his camera.

Never judge people by their appearance … no to labels!!

~~November 30, 2014~~

One Should Never Judge a Person by External Appearances

Race is a social concept used to categorize humans into large and distinct populations or groups by anatomical, cultural, ethnic, genetic, geographical, historical, linguistic, religious, and/or social affiliation. First used to refer to speakers of a common language and then to denote national affiliations, in the 17th century, people began to use the term to relate to observable physical traits. Such use promoted hierarchies favorable to differing ethnic groups. Starting from the 19th century, the term was often used, in a taxonomic sense, to denote genetically differentiated human populations defined by phenotype.

“One beautiful spring day a red rose blossomed in a forest. Many kinds of trees and plants grew there. As the rose looked around, a pine tree nearby said, “What a beautiful flower. I wish I was that lovely.” Another tree said, “Dear pine, do not be sad, we can not have everything.”

The rose turned its head and remarked, “It seems that I am the most beautiful plant in this forest.” A sunflower raised its yellow head and asked, “Why do you say that? In this forest there are many beautiful plants. You are just one of them.”

The red rose replied, “I see everyone looking at me and admiring me.” Then the rose looked at a cactus and said, “Look at that ugly plant full of thorns!” The pine tree said, “Red rose, what kind of talk is this? Who can say what beauty is you have thorns too.”

The proud red rose looked angrily at the pine and said, “I thought you had good taste! You do not know what beauty is at all. You can not compare my thorns to that of the cactus.”

What a proud flower, thought the trees …… “

The “Ferguson Case” …. so much more than just a “case”!!

~~November 28, 2014~~

The Truth About The Ferguson Case That Some People Really Can’t Accept

Adam Mordecai wrote the following post in Upworthy. I feel a need to share this and continue to give a voice to that African American (Black) community in this country. I feel a need to add my “white” voice to their concerns … that’s the least that I can do.

I’ve read post after post about the current (and previous – seems like it’s never changed) plight of the black young men in this country. How many have been killed? Most of them unarmed …. I think we will never know.

CrimeB

~ADAM WRITES~

“Some things I have learned:

ProPublica recently did an in-depth analysis and found that black kids between ages 15-19 are 21 times more likely to be shot and killed by cops than white kids of the same age. That’s an insane statistic. That’s per capita, not total. If you are a black teenage boy, you have a 21x higher risk of being shot by police than a white teenage boy.

Also, in 2010, federal prosecutors took 162,000 cases to a grand jury. You know how many DIDN’T go to trial? Eleven.

Mike Brown’s family will never get a state criminal trial to get justice for their son. And the testimony that denied them that right technically doesn’t make any sense. Seriously, go read it.

CrimeB

Police have a hard job. What they do is something I couldn’t ever do. But you know what they rarely have? Accountability. In this case, the prosecutor, Robert McCulloch, always gets indictments — unless it’s a cop. He’s had five cop-involved killing cases and zero indictments. Again, five cases against police haven’t made it to trial at all. He could get an indictment if he wanted one.

The fact that this didn’t at least get a trial infuriates me. But my being upset isn’t that interesting. I’m white. People will take me seriously because I don’t have the “bias” of being black. But actual black people, who live with this every day, are constantly second-guessed because they are somehow “biased.” As though not wanting to get shot by police at a 21x higher rate is a bias. It’s a daily reality of being black in America.

Danez Smith experiences this every day. He is 21x more likely than me to be shot by a police officer. And so he wrote “Not an Elegy for Mike Brown.”
