This Thanksgiving, No Place for Refugees at the American Table

In the wake of the horrific attacks in Paris on Nov. 13, there has been a crushing backlash against refugees from the wars in Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan. As Americans prepare for one of the most popular national holidays, Thanksgiving, which commemorates the support and nourishment provided by the indigenous people to English refugees seeking a better life free from religious persecution, a wave of xenophobia is sweeping the country.

In the U.S. Congress, no less than six separate bills have been put forward to block any federal funding to resettle refugees from Syria or Iraq and to empower states to deny entry into their “territory.” 

Imagine if all of a sudden we had 50 “statelets” creating their own border checkpoints, stopping all travelers, looking for anyone suspicious, i.e., any and all Syrians.

So far, 31 state governors have essentially demanded this.

Republican Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback issued an executive order forbidding any agency of state government from cooperating in any way with Syrian refugee support efforts. House Speaker Paul Ryan and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell have called for a pause in the Syrian refugee program, with the support of Democratic Sen. Chuck Schumer.

It has been almost 400 years since that first, fateful Thanksgiving feast in Massachusetts.

Xenophobic policies like those threatening to shut out refugees from these wars, if allowed to stand, should serve as a shameful centerpiece at every Thanksgiving table this year.

VIETNAMESE BOAT PEOPLE

Let’s go back in history and take a trip down “memory lane”.

The Vietnam War ended on April 30, 1975 with the Fall of Saigon to the North Vietnamese Army and the evacuation of more than 130,000 Vietnamese closely associated with the United States or the South Vietnamese regime.

Vietnamese boat people refers to refugees who fled Vietnam by boat and ship after the Vietnam War, especially during 1978 and 1979, but continuing until the early 1990’s. The term is also often used generically to refer to all the Vietnamese (about 2 million) who left their country by any means between 1975 and 1995. This article uses “boat people” to apply only to those who fled Vietnam by boat.

The number of boat people leaving Vietnam and arriving safely in another country totalled almost 800,000 between 1975 and 1995. Many of the refugees failed to survive the passage, facing danger and hardship from pirates, over-crowded boats, and storms. The boat people’s first destinations were the Southeast Asian countries of Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. The mass flight of hundreds of thousands of boat people from Vietnam in 1978 and 1979 caused an international humanitarian crisis with the Southeast Asian countries increasingly unwilling to accept more boat people on their shores. After negotiations and an international conference in 1979, Vietnam agreed to limit the flow of people leaving the country, the Southeast Asian countries agreed to admit the boat people temporarily, and the rest of the world, especially the developed countries, agreed to assume most of the costs of caring for the boat people and to resettle them in their countries.

From refugee camps in Southeast Asia, the great majority of boat people were resettled in developed countries, more than one-half in the United States and most of the remainder in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom. Several tens of thousands were repatriated to Vietnam, either voluntarily or involuntarily. Programs and facilities to carry out resettlement included the Orderly Departure Program, the Philippine Refugee Processing Center, and the Comprehensive Plan of Action.

These people were displaced as a direct consequence of the Vietnam war.

Ideologies, beliefs, convictions, policies, intervention in an unknown region were applied to this country.

“The invaders” lacked knowledge about the country that was invaded.

The role of the United States in the Vietnam War began after the Second World War and escalated into full commitment during what is termed the Vietnam War from 1959 to 1975.

This historical fact can be brought to our present times and applied to the massive exodus that is occurring in the Middle East as a consequence of the war in Syria.

The common factor: human beings fleeing areas of conflict, danger, oppression, violence and death.

Looking and hoping for a better future for their families.

It seems seems to me that history is repeating itself.

As humans, this race hasn’t learned any life lessons.

The powers that be continue to impose destruction,conflict and chaos in areas were they don’t belong.

Will we ever learn to live in peace?

Can we be compassionate with those that are leaving their homes behind?

I wonder.

SYRIAN CIVIL WAR

The Syrian Civil War is an ongoing armed conflict taking place in Syria. The unrest began in the early spring of 2011 within the context of Arab Spring protests, with nationwide protests against President Bashar al-Assad‘s government, whose forces responded with violent crackdowns. The conflict gradually morphed from prominent protests to an armed rebellion after months of military sieges.

The armed opposition consists of various groups that were formed during the course of the conflict, primarily the Free Syrian Army, which was the first to take up arms in 2011, and the Islamic Front, formed in 2013. In 2013, Hezbollah entered the war in support of the Syrian Army. In the east, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), a jihadist militant group originating from Iraq, made rapid military gains in both Syria and Iraq, eventually conflicting with the other rebels. By July 2014, ISIL controlled a third of Syria’s territory and most of its oil and gas production, thus establishing itself as the major opposition force.

By July 2013, the Syrian government was in control of approximately 30–40% of the country’s territory and 60% of the Syrian population. A United Nations report in late 2012 described the conflict as being “overtly sectarian in nature”, between mostly Alawite government forces, militias and other Shia groups fighting largely against Sunni-dominated rebel groups, although both opposition and government forces have denied it. Due to foreign involvement, this conflict has been called a proxy war.

More than 4 million Syrians have fled their country’s ongoing civil war

In recent weeks, chaos at border crossings and train stations, squalid conditions in makeshift refugee camps and a heartbreaking photograph of a drowned Syrian toddler have all helped bring Europe’s refugee crisis into the global spotlight.

According to the UNHCR, more than 380,000 migrants and refugees have landed on Europe’s southern shores so far this year, up from 216,000 arrivals in the whole of 2014. They are fleeing persecution, poverty and conflicts that rage beyond the continent’s borders.

Just simply imagine … put yourselves in the shoes of a terrified child who doesn’t have a clue why their world has been terribly changed.

Imagine the adrenaline rush of the adults, after going through all the journey to get to where they were.

Imagine being in a group of screaming and running human beings.

Imagine the sound of the policemen running after you to catch you and return you to the uncomfortable place you came from.

All that you know is gone, totally gone.

You see a possibility of getting away.

Getting away to where?

All that is out there is unknown.

You think you’ve made it, amidst all the screaming and running.

You can see and almost taste freedom.

Suddenly you feel yourself falling to the ground … all because this woman has extended her leg and has consciously tripped you.

All within seconds …. and the ground rises up to meet you as you fall.

Hungarian camerawoman faces criminal investigation after kicking a little girl and tripping up a migrant father carrying his terrified young child as they fled police

TV station sacked her for ‘unacceptable‘ behavior after watching video
Opposition parties say they will initiate charges of violence against Laszlo

The Hungarian camerawoman who was caught tripping up a desperate refugee father carrying his child has been caught on a second video – kicking a fleeing girl.

Petra Laszlo is now set to face a criminal investigation over her shocking assaults, which she carried out while filming Syrian refugees as they fled across a field on the Hungarian-Serbian border.

Laszlo has also been fired from her job at Hungarian news site N1TV, which is run by the anti-immigration far-right Jobbik party.

She worked for the far-right Jobbik-affiliated channel N1TV.

This comes after another Hungarian news channel’s leaked internal memo that requested refugee children be excluded from news packages.

These families have witnessed horrors beyond belief.

Had they remained they would have been slaughtered.

Now they live in tents, with limited access to food water. Supplies are limited and tens-of-thousands are fleeing to Europe.

Even in this crisis, food is being cut off to 200,000 refugees.

In my humble opinion, this graph addresses several topics. All of them controversial.

There are religious people who stand strong in their belief that an unborn child, a zygote, a fetus, should be protected at all costs.

Others have expressed their negative opinions towards refugees in this global movement caused directly by the conflicts and wars in the Middle East.

Many governments in the European Union have turned their back on them.

It’s the people of some countries who have opened their arms to those in need.

If a zygote is good enough for incredible protection, what about the born child?

What about these kids who, by no fault of their own, have been uprooted from what they know and are now refugees?

They should be cherished, protected and fought for as the fertilized egg.

Maybe even more … because they ARE alive!

ANGELINA JOLIE

Actress and director Jolie, a special envoy of the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees, appealed for unity and accountability for some 4 million Syrian refugees. She has made 11 visits to Syrian refugees in Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Turkey and Malta.

“We cannot look at Syria, and the evil that has arisen from the ashes of indecision, and think this is not the lowest point in the world’s ability to protect and defend the innocent,” Jolie told the 15-member Security Council.

“Those refugees cannot come to this council, so please, will you go to them,” said Jolie, who also berated the council for failing to overcome divisions to end the war.

Actress Angelina Jolie pleaded with world powers Friday to help the millions of Syrian refugees, sharply criticizing the U.N. Security Council for being paralyzed by its division over Syria’s four-year conflict.

Jolie said the council must now “work as one,” and she said she would like to see the foreign minister of each of the 15 council members come to the table to negotiate a political solution.

She also urged council members to visit Syrian refugees and see the crisis for themselves.

In addition, Jolie spoke briefly about the rising migrant crisis on the Mediterranean, where more than 1,300 migrants fleeing Syria and other places have drowned at sea over the past three weeks.

“It is sickening to see thousands of refugees drowning on the doorstep of the world’s wealthiest continent,” she said. “No one risks the lives of their children in this way except out of utter desperation.”

In January, Jolie appealed for urgent funding to assist millions of displaced Iraqis and Syrians living in dire conditions in northern Iraq.

More than 3.8 million Syrians have fled to Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq and Egypt, according to the UNHCR, while another 7.6 million Syrians are displaced inside the country. At least 1.8 million Iraqis were also displaced last year by violence triggered by the Sunni militant onslaught.
