Full Moon Names and Their Meanings

Full Moon names date back to Native Americans, of what is now the northern and eastern United States. The tribes kept track of the seasons by giving distinctive names to each recurring full Moon. Their names were applied to the entire month in which each occurred. There was some variation in the Moon names, but in general, the same ones were current throughout the Algonquin tribes from New England to Lake Superior. European settlers followed that custom and created some of their own names. Since the lunar month is only 29 days long on the average, the full Moon dates shift from year to year.

This was the time to set beaver traps before the swamps froze, to ensure a supply of warm winter furs. Another interpretation suggests that the name Full Beaver Moon comes from the fact that the beavers are now actively preparing for winter.

It is sometimes also referred to as the Frosty Moon.

The early Native Americans did not record time by using the months of the Julian or Gregorian calendar. Many tribes kept track of time by observing the seasons and lunar months, although there was much variability.

For some tribes, the year contained 4 seasons and started at a certain season, such as spring or fall. Others counted 5 seasons to a year. Some tribes defined a year as 12 Moons, while others assigned it 13. Certain tribes that used the lunar calendar added an extra Moon every few years, to keep it in sync with the seasons.

Colonial Americans adopted some of the Native American full Moon names and applied them to their own calendar system (primarily Julian, and later, Gregorian). Since the Gregorian calendar is the system that many in North America use today, that is how we have presented the list of Moon names, as a frame of reference. The Native American names have been listed by the month in the Gregorian calendar to which they are most closely associated.

TALE OF THE RED CUPS 

Just when you think you have heard it all, along comes a story that takes the prize.

I’ve always thought that the actual and ever-increasing commercialization of Christmas is too much and too early.

The ads, the decorations, the conversations and disagreements about Christmas start in early autumn, even before Thanksgiving’s had a chance for glory.

The motto: “The War On Christmas“.

This year is no exception and all the hoopla has appeared over the lunatic actions and crazy rants of an “overzealous pastor” whose past actions have been quite questionable.

Here’s a gist of this story. I personally think I wouldn’t want this “pastor guy” representing me in any way.

‘War On Christmas’ Apparently Now Being Fought With Coffee Cups

The 2015 holiday season has barely begun and the first shots in the War On Christmas have already been fired in the form of Starbucks coffee cups:

Some people are angry about Starbucks’ new holiday cups. Really angry.

What is the issue, exactly?

In previous years, Starbucks’ iconic holiday cups, which the chain uses in lieu of white cups in November and December, featured wintry or Christmas-themed designs like snowflakes, ornaments and nature scenes. This year, the cups are more minimalist – a red ombre design that Jeffrey Fields, Starbucks’ vice president of design, said was meant to embrace “the simplicity and the quietness” of the holiday season.

This is a huge problem for some people, who feel that the plain red cups are oppressing Christians by insulting Christmas.

“This is a denial of historical reality and the great Christian heritage behind the American Dream that has so benefited Starbucks,” Andrea Williams of the U.K.-based organization Christian Concern told Breitbart. “This also denies the hope of Jesus Christ and His story so powerfully at this time of year.”

To clarify, it’s not like the previous cups were decked out in crosses and mangers. It’s unclear why a drawing of a winking snowman or a dog sledding, for instance, is more “Christian” than a plain red and green (you know, Christmas colors) cup.

But either way, angry Starbucks patrons have a solution.

Former pastor Joshua Feuerstein claimed in a viral Facebook video that he had “pranked” Starbucks by simply telling them his name was “Merry Christmas” — thus forcing the surely unimpressed barista to write the words “Merry Christmas” on the cup.

Feuerstein also noted that he brought a gun into the coffee shop, in spite of Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz’ request that patrons leave their firearms at home. Ho ho, good one!

In the video, Feuerstein encouraged people to similarly claim that their names are “Merry Christmas” and to use the hashtag #MerryChristmasStarbucks. Social media users have been expressing their support for the “prank.”

While this entire “War On Christmas” meme is obviously ridiculous, especially since if there is a “war” on Christmas it’s obvious that Christmas has one judging by the fact that the “holiday” season seems to start earlier and earlier every year, it is part of a larger phenomenon on the right that plays itself out on the political stage.

A guy on the internet named Joshua Feuerstein seems to think so. Conservatives coined the “War on Christmas” about a decade ago, claiming religious persecution when, for example, someone opts to use the all-inclusive phrase ‘Happy Holidays’ instead of ‘Merry Christmas.’

Google honors Hedy Lamarr, inventor of technology behind Wi-Fi and Bluetooth

Renaissance woman Hedy Lamarr could not be accused of living a dull life. Even before fleeing her loveless marriage to a Nazi arms dealer to become a Hollywood star, Lamarr had captured international attention as the first female actor to simulate an orgasm in a non-pornographic film.

But none of this, presumably, is why Google has chosen to honor the Austrian-American with a Doodle on what would be her 101st birthday.

She is remembered for her beauty on the silver screen, but the Hollywood actor spent her nights inventing a weapons communication system that was a precursor to wireless technologies including Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.

Born Hedwig Eva Maria Kiesler in 1914 in Vienna, Lamarr began acting as a teenager. At the age of 18, she starred in the scandalous 1930’s Czech film Ecstasy, in which she goes skinny dipping then, still completely nude, chases a runaway horse. Later on, she simulates an orgasm – the first female actor to do this in a theatrically-released film.

Married at 19 to a Nazi arms merchant – one of the richest men in Austria – Lamarr was virtually a prisoner in her own home, according to Trina Robbins, author of Hedy Lamarr and a Secret Communication System. It was during this time that Lamarr was first exposed to weapons technology – at numerous dinner parties where she listened to her husband and his guests discuss the technical aspects of weapons design.

She eventually fled the marriage and went to Hollywood, landing a seven-year, $3000-a-week contract with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. An immediate sensation, the hugely popular actor starred in films including Tortilla Flat, Lady of the Tropics, Boom Town, and Samson and Delilah.

President Obama Rejects Keystone XL Pipeline Proposal

The pipeline would carry about 800,000 barrels of oil per day from Alberta to Gulf Coast refineries. Environmentalists worry about about the climate and environmental impacts the pipeline could have, including dramatically higher greenhouse gas emissions and a heightened risk of oil spills.

President Barack Obama announced Friday, November 6, 2015,  that he is rejecting the Keystone XL pipeline proposal, saying the project “would not serve the interests of the United States.”

The president cited concerns about the impact on the environment and a political climate that over-hyped the pipeline’s benefit.

Who was he and why does he matter?

Today’s Google Doodle explained

Antoine-Joseph “Adolphe” Sax (6 November 1814 – c. 7 February 1894) was a Belgian inventor and musician who invented the saxophone. He played the flute and clarinet, and his other creations are the saxotromba, saxhorn and saxtuba.

Antoine-Joseph Sax was born on November 6, 1814 in Dinant, Belgium to Mr. and Mrs. Charles-Joseph Sax. While his first name was Antoine, he was referred to as Adolphe from childhood.

His father and mother were instrument designers themselves, who made several changes to the design of the horn. Adolphe began to make his own instruments at an early age, entering two of his flutes and a clarinet into a competition at the age of 15. He subsequently studied performance on those two instruments as well as voice at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels.

November 6th is the 201st birthday of the Belgian musician and inventor of the saxophone, who is being celebrated by five Google Doodles

Adolphe Sax, born in Belgium on November 6, 1814, was a Belgian musician and inventor who created the much-loved saxophone. Sax invented several instruments including the saxophone which was patented in 1846.

“He started tinkering with instruments of his own, and upon bringing together the body of a brass and the mechanics of a woodwind, created a hybrid that would revolutionize music,” Google wrote on its Doodle blog.

“His eponymous saxophone had a sound all its own, a wonderfully smoky middle ground between the two.”

Sax was one of 11 children, and came from a lineage of instrument-makers – his father, who was also a carpenter, passed down his skills to his entrepreneurial son who apparently began tinkering with his first instrument – the clarinet – as a teenager.

According to Google, one Doodle wouldn’t be enough to showcase how creative and “inventive” Sax was, so the artist Lydia Nichols designed five different Doodles, each highlighting a different instrument invented by Sax.
