Disturbing Video

I was watching the news tonight and finally received clarification about the videos and memes that were coming through my Facebook Timeline.

I am totally aware that teenagers can be a handful.

They know it all, they frequently show no respect, they are distracted by technology, they refuse to listen.

Yet, there’s no doubt in my mind, and no one can convince me otherwise, that this is a clear cut case of excessive force. The parties aren’t “balanced” at all ….

a high school girl (sitting) versus a grown, muscular, trained man (standing).

If this police officer has a record of similar situations and lawsuits are pending …. there’s no doubt he has an anger issue, power freak mentality and who knows what else.

The video says it all …. oh wait, there was a video on Eric Garner’s death in New York City.

What does that say?

Video shows cop body-slamming high school girl in SC classroom

Update

Federal investigators, including the U.S. Department of Justice, have opened a civil rights investigation into the matter.

”The Columbia FBI Field Office, the Civil Rights Division, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of South Carolina have opened a civil rights investigation into the circumstances surrounding the arrest of a student at Spring Valley High School,” FBI Special Agent in Charge David Thomas said in a statement Tuesday.

“ The FBI will collect all available facts and evidence in order to determine whether a federal law was violated.

As this is an ongoing investigation, per Department of Justice policy we are unable to comment further at this time.”

The FBI has been asked to investigate an incident at a South Carolina high school Monday in which a police officer appeared to body slam a female student and drag her across a classroom.

In a news conference, a spokesman for the Richland County Sheriff’s Department, Curtis Wilson, identified the deputy in the video as Ben Fields, one of two school resource officers assigned to Spring Valley.

Fields had been placed on administrative duty pending an internal investigation, Wilson said, adding that the officer was declining interview requests.

Fields, who is white, is named as a defendant in a 2013 federal lawsuit that claims he “unfairly and recklessly targets African-American students with allegations of gang membership and criminal gang activity.”

The sheriff’s office says the student was asked to leave the classroom but refused.

School officials have banned the officer from the district and an investigation is underway.

Something to think about …. “The Flags are Coming Down but … “!!

Three weeks after a gunman massacred nine worshippers in a black church in Charleston, South Carolina, the Confederate battle flag that has flown for decades at the state Capitol is gone.

The flag issue has ignited fierce passion on both sides, from those who say it honors Southern heritage and sacrifice and those who call it an ugly symbol of racism and slavery.

Members of a South Carolina Highway Patrol honor guard lowered the flag for the final time.

“In wake of the tragic massacre of nine members of the AME Emanuel Church in Charleston, Gov. Nikki Haley is calling for the removal of the Confederate flag which flies on the premises of the seat of our government.

It’s long overdue and a no-brainer that this divisive symbol has no place on Statehouse grounds.

Put it in a museum, put in in your backyard, put it on the back of your truck, but don’t let it fly on Statehouse grounds.

The Confederate flag is an anachronism — a thing that seems to belong in the past and not to fit in the present — and a contradiction in the direction South Carolina seeks to go.

This is an opportune time to capitalize on tragedy. It’s sad that it took such a horrific event to bring Gov. Nikki Haley and Sen. Lindsey Graham to this stark realization.

But “the arc of the moral universe is long but bends towards justice.”

It must be kept in mind that this is the removal of the flag from the state Capitol. There are many of them all over the South. There are decals on vehicles, there are personal flags, there are souvenirs … you name it.

This is an ingrained value, a feeling of “heritage” and pride in some people.

Maybe because they don’t know the real meaning behind it, maybe because they truly believe in white supremacy, maybe because they are racist, maybe because they are just plain mean.

This is a “step” …. the first step in a long journey.

A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.

Confederate flag pulled from SC capitol grounds by activists

An activist group claimed responsibility for taking the flag down. Witnesses said two people were arrested by authorities almost immediately after one of them scaled the flag pole on the north side of the State House grounds and pulled the Confederate banner down.

The state Bureau of Protective Services confirmed it had arrested two people at the State House about 6:15 a.m. Those arrested were Brittany Ann Byuarim Newsome, a 30-year-old Raleigh resident, and James Ian Tyson, a 30-year-old Charlotte resident.

They are charged with defacing state property, a misdemeanor that carries penalties of up to three years in prison or a fine of up to $5,000 or both.

Choked-Up Jon Stewart Says He Can’t Tell Jokes After Charleston Massacre
Too much to handle for the funnyman.

“I have one job, and it’s a pretty simple job,” Jon Stewart said on “The Daily Show” on the night after the #CharlestonShooting “I come in in the morning, and we look at the news and I write jokes about it.”

But that’s not what happened last night.

What follows is a heartfelt appeal to America on the issue of race and our strangely inconsistent application of outrage. He noted that two wars and trillions were spent to fight a force far less dangerous that domestic shootings and American racial terror — Islamic radicalism. He would go on to highlight some of the lower-level forms of abuse, from the confederate flag over South Carolina to the residual heritage of slavery.

“We have roads named after confederate generals.

Black people have to drive on roads named after those who would prevent them from driving.

That’s insanity.” As America renews its debate over the use of Confederate imagery,and its pernicious effects on black society, his point is an urgent one, indeed.

‘This was a terrorist attack’

The Daily Show host Jon Stewart has slammed America’s response to the mass shooting in a South Carolina church, predicting that nothing would be done in the wake of a “terrorist attack” that left nine people dead.

In a sombre opening to a show he promised would contain no jokes, Stewart said some people were already working hard to discount the idea that racism was the motive behind the massacre.

Prior to introducing his guest – Nobel peace prize-winner Malala Yousafzai – Stewart told viewers: “I have nothing other than just sadness that once again we have to peer into the abyss of the depraved violence that we do to each other, and the nexus of a just gaping racial wound that will not heal but we pretend doesn’t exist.

“I’m confident, though, that by acknowledging it, by staring into that and seeing it for what it is, we still won’t do jackshit.

“Yeah. That’s us.”

The reluctance to label domestic shootings of this kind as terrorism, he went on, led to what he called a “disparity of response between when we think people that are foreign are going to kill us and us killing ourselves”.

“If this had been what we thought was Islamic terrorism … we invaded two countries and spent trillions of dollars and thousands of American lives, and now fly unmanned death machines over, like, five or six different countries …

“Nine people. Shot in a church. What about that?

Eh. What are you gonna do?

Crazy is as crazy is, right?”

The media response had been too slow to acknowledge the culture that made such violence possible, Stewart said: “I heard someone on the news say, a tragedy has visited this church. This wasn’t a tornado. This was racist. This was a guy with a Rhodesia badge on his sweater … This one is black and white. There’s no nuance here.

“And we’re going to keep pretending: I don’t get it, what happened, there’s one guy lost his mind. We are steeped in that culture in this country and we refuse to recognize it, and I cannot believe how hard people are working to discount it.”

Stewart pointed to what he called the “racial wallpaper” of South Carolina, where a confederate flag continues to be flown within the grounds of the capitol building: “The confederate flag flies over South Carolina. And the roads are named for confederate generals.

“And the white guy’s the one who feels like his country’s being taken away from him.”
