IOTD …. “Image of the Day”, #88!!

~~November 29, 2014~~

“The young, free to act on their initiative, can lead their elders in the direction of the unknown … The children, the young, must ask the questions that we would never think to ask, but enough trust must be re-established so that the elders will be permitted to work with them on the answers.”
~~Margaret Mead~~

A child named Josef sits on a stone porch outside his home in Chupon, Peru on Sept. 1, 2014. The village lies in the Peruvian Andes in the province of Ayacucho, and houses about 30 peasants who subsist on farming corn and potatoes.

A dear blogger friend taught me about this concept.

~In her own words~

IOTD” is image of the day, a concept I came up with. I teach visual meditative therapy – or in easy terms – a mini mental holiday. For some people it is very difficult for them to get their image right. I post an image a day for people to use in their mini mental vacay. Some are serious, some are silly, and some are just beautiful!”

At the end of the day …. “The Alhambra”!!

~~November 27, 2014~~

Alhambra, the complete form of which was Calat Alhambra, is a palace and fortress complex located in Granada, Andalucia, Spain. It was originally constructed as a small fortress in 889 and then largely ignored until its ruins were renovated and rebuilt in the mid-11th century by the Moorish emir Mohammed ben Al-Ahmar of the Emirate of Granada, who built its current palace and walls. It was converted into a royal palace in 1333 by Yusuf I, Sultan of Granada.

Alhambra’s Islamic palaces, as we know them today, were built for the last Muslim emirs in Spain and the court of the Nasrid dynasty. After the conquest of Granada by the Reyes Católicos (“Catholic Monarchs”) in 1492, some portions were used by Christian rulers.

The Palace of Charles V, built by Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor in 1527, was inserted in the Alhambra within the Nasrid fortifications. After being allowed to fall into disrepair for centuries, the buildings being occupied by squatters, Alhambra was rediscovered in the 19th century by European scholars and travelers, with restorations commencing.

Moorish poets described it as “a pearl set in emeralds,” an allusion to the color of its buildings and the woods around them. The palace complex was designed with the mountainous site in mind and many forms of technology were considered.

The park (Alameda de la Alhambra), which is overgrown with wildflowers and grass in the spring, was planted by the Moors with roses, oranges, and myrtles; its most characteristic feature, however, is the dense wood of English elms brought by the Duke of Wellington in 1812.

The park has a multitude of nightingales and is usually filled with the sound of running water from several fountains and cascades. These are supplied through a conduit 8 km (5.0 mi) long, which is connected with the Darro at the monastery of Jesus del Valle above Granada.

At the end of the day …. “Love Letters”!!

~~November 26, 2014~~

What I needed! Soft music, a sweet guitar and attraction. Swaying melody, seductive. Pulls me toward you. Because I love you!

I Do Not Love You Except Because I Love You

I do not love you except because I love you;
I go from loving to not loving you,
From waiting to not waiting for you
My heart moves from cold to fire.

I love you only because it’s you the one I love;
I hate you deeply, and hating you
Bend to you, and the measure of my changing love for you
Is that I do not see you but love you blindly.

Maybe January light will consume
My heart with its cruel
Ray, stealing my key to true calm.

In this part of the story I am the one who
Dies, the only one, and I will die of love because I love you,
Because I love you, Love, in fire and blood.

To start the day …. “Tierra del Olvido”!!

~~November 8, 2014~~

Playing for Change is a multimedia music project, created by the American producer and sound engineer Mark Johnson with his Timeless Media Group, that seeks to inspire, connect, and bring peace to the world through music. Playing For Change also created a separate non-profit organization called the Playing For Change Foundation, which builds music schools for children around the world.

Playing For Change was born in 2002 as a shared vision between co-founders, Mark Johnson and Whitney Kroenke, to hit the streets of America with a mobile recording studio and cameras in search of inspiration and the heartbeat of the people. Producers Mark Johnson and Enzo Buono, traveled around the world to places including New Orleans, Barcelona, South Africa, India, Nepal, the Middle East and Ireland.

Using mobile recording equipment, the duo recorded local musicians performing the same song, interpreted in their own style. Among the artists participating or openly involved in the project are Vusi Mahlasela, Louis Mhlanga, Clarence Bekker, Tal Ben Ari (Tula), Bono, Keb’ Mo’, David Broza, Manu Chao and Grandpa Elliott. This musical journey resulted in the award-winning documentary, “A Cinematic Discovery of Street Musicians.”

This video features over 75 musicians across the country of Colombia. Throughout our journey we have learned that music is the greatest tool for healing broken countries, cultures and hearts. With this video we set out to unite and inspire the people of Colombia so they can move forward from years of conflict and create a positive future. Listen to the music, see the smiling faces, and remember that we are going to make it as a human race!!

La Tierra del Olvido was produced in partnership with the Americas Business Council Foundation (Natalia Mejia, Manuela Mejia and Fernando Rodriguez-Vila).

This song unites over 80 musicians across the nation of Colombia and offers a peaceful moment in the nation’s 50-year war.

No matter how much division and struggle we face in life, we can always persevere with the power of music and love.

Google Doodle …. “Day of the Dead”!!

~~November 2, 2014~~

Day of the Dead (Spanish: Día de Muertos) is a Mexican holiday observed throughout Mexico and around the world in other cultures. The holiday focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died.

The celebration takes place on October 31, November 1 and November 2, in connection with the triduum of Allhallowtide: All Hallows’ Eve, Hallowmas, and All Souls’ Day. Traditions connected with the holiday include building private altars called ofrendas, honoring the deceased using sugar skulls, marigolds, and the favorite foods and beverages of the departed, and visiting graves with these as gifts.

They also leave possessions of the deceased.

The reality of a grandmother’s life …. no doubt!!

~~November 1, 2014~~

Poems for grandmothers

A grandmother’s job never ends. Many grandmothers in our society step in to raise children when their mother is unavailable. Even in the best of situations, having a grandmother to help with child raising and to provide a softer touch is often a welcome intrusion.

The other side of the issue is that grandmothers have to realize when it is time to step back and keep their mouths shut. If there is a healthy father and mother, they are the ones with the final say in how to raise their children.

~Grandma’s Wings~

Grandma I wonder
where you keep your wings.

Are they hung in your closet
with the rest of your things?

Do you put them away
and just use them at night

or give them to Rosie
to polish up bright.

I know you have wings,
for this must be true,

’cause God always gives
them to Angels just like you.

Movie Time …. “The Book of Life”!!

October 17, 2014~~

It was a short day at school today. The kids were sent home at noon. My “sitter” duties started earlier. As a wise sitter, I invited Angelika (my oldest grand-daughter) to the movies. We had a quick lunch and headed to the theater.

Fridays have become a “tradition”. That the day we have a “date”: movies and dinner.

She really wanted to see this one. I wasn’t sure but …. Angelika can very easily get what she wants out of me.

And I was glad … didn’t expect this movie to be so good and entertaining. And it will be a “sure repeat”!

(… a line from the movie)

A charming tribute to Mexican culture and its Day of the Dead holiday, director Jorge R. Gutierrez and producer Guillermo del Toro’s The Book of Life follows three childhood friends – Manolo (Diego Luna), Maria (Zoe Saldana), and Joaquin (Channing Tatum) – whose romantic fates become the subject of a wager between two married deities: La Muerte (Kate del Castillo), who oversees the Land of the Remembered, and Xibalba (Ron Perlman), ruler of the Land of the Forgotten.

The Book of Life is a 2014 American 3D computer-animated adventure musical comedy film produced by Reel FX Creative Studios and distributed by 20th Century Fox. Co-written and directed by Jorge Gutierrez, the film stars the voices of Diego Luna, Zoe Saldana, and Channing Tatum with supporting roles by Christina Applegate, Ice Cube, Ron Perlman, and Kate del Castillo. The film was theatrically released on October 17, 2014.

The film is described as the journey of Manolo Sánchez, a young man who is torn between fulfilling the expectations of his family and following his heart. In love with the beautiful María, yet having to battle with the affections of the charming Joaquín, to win her heart, the spirits La Muerte and Xibalba bet on who will win María.

Afraid to lose the bet after María falls for Manolo, Xibalba sends a snake to kill Manolo, hoping that will result in Joaquín becoming María’s lover. In order to return to the human world and to María, Manolo embarks on an incredible journey that spans three fantastical worlds where he must face his greatest fears armed with only his wits, his guitar, and his two swords.

“As it appears in …. “

Mexican folklore gets the full 3-D animated treatment in one of the most visually dazzling films of the year.

At first, director Jorge Gutiérrez and producerGuillermo Del Toro (director of “Pan’s Labyrinth” and “Pacific Rim”) seem to be offering just another joke-a-minute family flick, complete with lessons about believing in yourself. Soon, though, things heat up with blasts of color and a vibrant Meso american myth.

Manolo (voiced by Diego Luna) yearns to be a musician, but hails from a legendary line of bullfighters. He’s in love with the independent Maria (Zoe Saldana), but so is Joaquin (Channing Tatum), a soldier obsessed with his medals (and his mustache). Above it all, La Muerte and Xibalba, skeletal spirits from the afterlife, wager over who will win Maria’s heart.

To start the day …. great news from The Netherlands!!

~~October 14, 2014~~

I woke up this morning to great news from an awesome human being whom I met through blogging.

I’m very proud to say that we have become fast friends. I’m her “Big Sister“, she’s my “Lil Sister” …. we are “friends for life” (FFL), we belong to a “Wolf Pack“, we banter here and there. We share concerns, common friends, similar life values and beliefs, discuss issues in a productive manner and have each other’s back to a “T”.

Many times people wonder about the validity and reality of so-called friends who we meet on line, in cyberspace.

Our friendship is strong, real and valid.

… and we’ve never met in person!!

“In November 2014 I will publish my second poetry book: ‘My Whisperings’.

Don’t let the lightness of the cover fool you though, the poems will be mostly dark like the ones on my blog.

I am very exited!

Lots of Love,

My Whisperings is the second poetry book written by the heart and soul of Just Patty (Patty van Delft), the author of My Wings and the Dutch fantasy novel Drägan Duma – Zij Die Hoort.

In My Whisperings, Patty explores the depths of emotions even further.
This book contains 80 poems, 20 short poems and a collection of photographic artwork made by the author herself.

A collection of dark poetry with rays of light. Many can relate to the rollercoaster of emotions the poems in this book describe so honestly. Fear, pain, loss, anxiety, hope, joy, love, strength and courage.
